Braves deck Phils
6-3 in 10 innings
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -
Hank Aaron of the Atlanta
Braves sat out Monday night’s
game with the Philadelphia
Phillies because of a chronic
back condition which has
bothered him all season.
Manager Eddie Mathews told
Aaron before the game that he
would use him only “as a last
resort.” Aaron was in uniform
for the game but Mathews
passed over the star slugger
four times to use other pinch
hitters.
playagain,” said Mathews after
the game. “It is a day to day
thing.”
Aaron thus “lost” a game in
his bid to stay on a pace which
will enable him to set a new
all-time career record of 715
homers this season. He has hit
23 homers in 89 games. Should
he retain that pace in the
Braves’ remaining 73 games he
would finish the season with ex
actly 715 homers, topping Babe
Ruth’s mark of 714.
Pinch - hitter Norm Miller
doubled home the go-ahead run
as the Braves scored three runs
in the 10th inning to defeat the
Phillies, 6-3.
Frank Tepedino walked to
open the 10th and after Mike
Lum sacrificed him to second,
the Phillies intentionally walked
Johnny Oates. Miller, batting
for pitcher Tom House, doubled
to right to score Tepedino and
Ralph Garr then beat out an in
field hit to score Oats. Miller
scored on a sacrifice fly by
Marty Perez.
The Braves had tied the score
in the ninth when Oates walked
and Paul Casanova, sent up to
bat for pitcher Danny Friesella,
hit a 3-2 pitch into the seats for
his first home run of the year.
Phillies’ manager Danny Oz
ark announced after the game
that he was playing the game
under protest because of an
obstruction call made by um
pire Shag Crawford in the third
inning.
Larry Bowa was on first base
in the third and broke for sec
ond on a hit-and-run play when
pitcher Steve Carlton lined a
double down the leftfield line.
Braves’ shortstop Marty Perez
interfered with Bowa in the
basepath and Crawford immed
iately called an obstruction,
awarding third base to Bowa.
Ozark, however, argued that
Bowa would have scored on the
play had not Perez blocked his
