County Commissioners this
morning that there was not
enough sheriff’s patrol cars on
duty at night.
She said she had talked with
Sheriff Dwayne Gilbert about
the matter and he had referred
her to the commissioners.
The commissioners told Mrs.
Moore they couldn’t recall
turning down any requests from
the sheriff for more personnel.
Chairman Jack Moss checked
county records and found that
the Sheriff’s Department has
seven cars and one van and 15
deputies, not including the
sheriff.
Mrs. Moore said she was told
that the county had only one
patrol car available at night.
The commissioners said that it
was up to the sheriff to make
patrol assignments.
Mrs. Moore said she became
concerned when her daughter
with her boy friend was driving
the Moore family car one night
and it broke down near Griffin
Academy.
She said by the time the
couple had walked to a nearby
house to telephone for help, that
vandals had damaged the car
extensively. She guessed they
had planned to strip the car.
Mrs. Moore said she had to
wait an hour and a half for a
sheriff’s car to come and in
vestigate.
Mrs. Moore said she would go
back to Sheriff Gilbert and
report what the commissioners
had told her.
