Deaths -F unerals
Mr. Buchanan
Mr. William Raymond
Buchanan of 1614 Piedmont
road was dead on arrival at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital
Sunday morning after suffering
an apparent heart seizure.
Mr. Buchanan was a lifelong
resident of Griffin. He was a
member of the Faith Baptist
Church and was a veteran of
World War Two.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Jeanette Stark Buchanan;
two sons, Thomas Raymond
Buchanan and William Larry
Buchanan of Griffin; three
sisters, Mrs. Frank Van
Haltern, Mrs. Eula Rawls, both
of Griffin and Mrs. Hallie B.
North of Arlington, Va.; three
grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were
conducted this afternoon at 2
o’clock in the old section of Oak
Hill cemetery. The Rev. Gordon
Buchanan officiated. McDonald
Chapel was in charge of plans.
Mrs. Cook
Graveside services for Mrs.
Mary Cook, who died Sunday
morning at Kennestone
Hospital in Marietta, were
conducted this afternoon at 2
o’clock in Finchers cemetery.
Mrs. Cook was the wife of
Woodrow Cook, formerly of
Griffin.

Mrs. Freeman
Mrs. Alice F. Freeman, wife
of William F. Freeman of the
Peachtree Towers, Atlanta,
died at the Georgia Baptist
Church in Atlanta Saturday
night where she had been ad
mitted on Tuesday.
Mrs. Freeman was a lifelong
resident of Atlanta and a
member of the North Avenue
Presbyterian Church. Her
husband was a native of Senoia.
In addition to her husband she
is survived by a foster
daughter, Miss Helen Austin of
Atlanta; and sister-in-law, Miss
Virginia Freeman of Senoia.
Funeral services were con
ducted this morning at 11
o’clock from the graveside in
the Senoia cemetery. The Rev.
Dan Lester officiated. Haisten
Funeral Home of Griffin was in
charge of plans.
Mrs. Brooks
Mrs. Janie Dickens Brooks,
widow of Mr. William Howard
Brdoks of Route three, Bar
nesville, formerly of Griffin,
died early Sunday morning at
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
She was admitted to the hospital
on Tuesday.
A native of Upson County,
Mrs. Brooks was the daughter
of the late William Dennis
Dickesn and Mrs. Essie White
Dickens. She had made her
home in Barnesville since
August, 1972.
In addition to her mother, she
is survived by two sons,
Richard Brooks and Larry F.
Brooks, both of Atlanta; two
sisters, Mrs. Edith Smith of
Warner Robins and Mrs. Claire
Hamm of Macon; a brother,
Charles Dickens of Fort Worth,
Tex., and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2:3oo'clock in Haisten’s chapel.
Burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. The body will remain
at Haisten Funeral Home in
Griffin.
Mr. Brooks
Mr. W. Luther Brooks, 68, of
413 North 16th street died at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital
Saturday night after being
admitted earlier. His death was
attributed to a massive heart
seizure.
Mr. Brooks was a retired
Griffin police officer and for a
period of months he served as
an attendant for the Com
mercial Bank parking lot.
At the time the late Luther
Middlebrooks was sheriff of
Spalding County, Mr. Brooks
served as his chief deputy for
eight years.
He was a native of Coweta
County, son of the late Willie
Ernest Brooks and the late Lucy
Herrin Brooks, Mr. Brooks
resided in Griffin since 1917 and
was a member of the Grace
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Grace Abbott Brooks; a
son, Harold Brooks of Griffin;
two daughers, Mrs. James F.
Watkins of Williamson and Mrs.
Frances B. Graham of Forsyth;
nine grandchildren; three
sisters, Mrs. Clara Gardner,
Mrs. J. W. McCullough and
Mrs. Gertrude Dix, all of Griffin
and a brother, Hubert Brooks of
Griffin.
Funeral services were con
ducted in Haisten’s chapel this
afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. The
Rev. Allen Huckaby officiated
and burial was in Oak Hill
cemetery. Haisten Funeral
Home was in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Adams
Mr. Clark M. Adams, 74, of
Brooks died Saturday morning
at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
where he had been a patient for
10 days.
Mr. Adams was a lifelong
resident of Fayette County and
had resided in Brooks for 20
years. He was a retired farmer
and a member of the Glen
Grove Baptist Church.
He is survived by three
daughters, Mrs. Charlie B. Ivey
of Fayetteville, Mrs. Ted Hardy
of Brooks and Mrs. Jimmy
Goens of Griffin; two sons, J. D.
Adams of Riverdale and Harry
Adams of Stockbridge; three
brothers, Ernestine Adams,
Garon Adams and Rufus
Adams, all of Tyrone; five
sisters, Mrs. Mattie Barge,
Mrs. Bertha Landrum, Miss
Effie Lou Adams, all of Tyrone,
Mrs. Vivian Spier and Mrs.
Cora Howard of East Point; 10
grandchildren and six great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 2
o’clock in the Glen Grove
Baptist Church. The Rev. Riley
Bomar, the Rev. B. E. Thomp
son and the Rev. Jack Buf
fington officiated and burial
was in the Flat Creek Baptist
Church cemetery in Fayette
County. Haisten Funeral Home
was in charge of plans.
Shoot victim
in hospital
A Griffin woman remains in
fair condition at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital after being
shot Friday night on Boyd Row.
Police have made an arrest in
connection with the incident.
Officers said Carolyn
Johnson, 21, of 107 Riley circle,
was shot around 11 p.m. Friday
night.
Early Saturday morning,
William Richards, 20, of 1330
Boyd Row, was arrested and
charged with aggravated
assault in connection with the
shooting. He also was charged
with stealing Miss Johnson’s
car.
He has been released from the
Spalding County jail under
bond, police said.

Hospital Report
Dismissed from the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital over the
Teevee sets
stolen here
Television sets were taken in
two house burglaries over the
weekend. This was the second
break-in in recent weeks at one
of the homes.
Sheriff’s deputies said that
Robert Burnett of Route Three,
Blanton Mill road, reported that
someone came through a kit
chen window and stole a 19-inch
black and white television,
console stereo and clock radio.
The house also was burglarized
last month, deputies said.
Two televisions and a pistol
were taken from the home of
Jimmy Prather, 225 Day street.
He reported that a 22-inch
color tv, 16-inch black and white
tv and a pistol were stolen.
Band instruments
taken from school
Police continued to in
vestigate the theft of some
$4,000 worth of band instru
ments taken in a burglary from
Spalding Junior High School,
Unit 111.
Principal I>aymon Hattaway
discovered the break-in at the
school gym.
Twenty-one instruments were
missing.

The Griffin-Spalding Hospital
Auxiliary will hold its quarterly
luncheon on Tuesday in the
hospital cafeteria at 1:15 p.m. A
business session will precede
the luncheon at 12:15 p.m. in the
conference room.
Mr. Harris, Sr.
Mr. Marvin E. Harris, Sr., of
127 Second avenue was dead on
arrival at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital Sunday evening.
Mr. Harris was born in
Meriwether County and had
made his home in Griffin for 37
years. He was a member of the
Mclntosh Baptist Church where
he served on the board of
deacons and attended the Men’s
Bible Class. Mr. Harris was an
employe of Lowell Bleachery.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Opal Louise Crawford
Harris; two sons, Marvin E.
Harris, Jr., and James Madison
Harris, both of Griffin; three
sisters-in-law, Mrs. Render
Harris of Griffin, Mrs. Homer J.
Harris of Senoia and Mrs. Drew
Harris of Deland, Fla.; three
grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
3 o’clock from the Mclntosh
Baptist Church. The Rev.
Bobby Watts and the Rev. Bob
Jones will officiate and burial
will be in Griffin Memorial
Gardens. Deacons of the church
will serve as pallbearers. The
body will remain at McDonald
Chapel until carried to the
church 30 minutes prior to the
funeral hour.

Fla. youth
killed
in accident
An 18-year-old Winter Park,
Fla., man was killed Saturday
morning when the car he was
driving went out of control on I
-75 near the Locust Grove in
tersection.
He was identified as Dean
Notestine Grove, Jr.
Investigating troopers said
the car flipped over six times.
Rescuers pulled the young
man from the wreckage and
waited some 30 minutes for an
ambulance from Henry County
to arrive. Finally someone
called Jackson for an am
bulance. John Sherrill rushed to
the scene and took the victim to
Clayton General Hospital where
he died of massive head in
juries.
He was traveling alone in the
car.
Land use seminar
Another in a series of land use
seminars will be held tonight at
the Chamber of Commerce
office beginning at 7:30.
Fred Parsons and Dr. John
Upchurch of West Georgia
College opened the series Jan. 3
at the Chamber.
Others besides the one tonight
will be Jan. 10 and Jan. 14 at the
same place.
Interested citizens have been
invited. Mclntosh Trail coor
dinated the land use seminars.
Applicants
swamp store
Rose’s department store will
announce details Jan. 21 on
making applications for jobs in
its new Spalding shopping
center store.
The downtown store on South
Hill has been swamped with
callers since a story appeared
in the Griffin Daily News about
the new store.
The Jan. 21 ad will direct
applicants to go to 1108 Zebulon
road in the new shopping
center.
The downtown store said it
was not set up to handle ap
plications.

Man’s foot shot
An Atlanta man was treated
at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
after being shot accidently in
the foot.
Spalding Sheriff’s officers
identified him as Robert M.
Pitts of 977 Blueridge road,
Atlanta.
He told the lawmen he was
traveling in a truck in Spalding
County and was attempting to
unload a double barrel shotgun.
