DR. LAWRENCE E. LAMB
Reader can’t keep diet
DEAR DR. LAMB - I have
a big problem and that is my
weight. I went to five doctors
ahd all they say is to cut
down. My problem is this. I
can’t take diet pills at all, and
I’m scared to anyway. I have
tried Dr. Atkins’ diet
faithfully and it resulted in
weakness. I tried Dr. Still
man’s and it resulted in my
being hungry for certain
foods. I know 1 do not need a
large amount of food or even
want it. My body seems to
crave any goods, nothing in
particular, just food. I gain
weight real fast. I would ap
preciate any advice.
DEAR READER - You
need to learn something
about nutrition. Those fad
diets are not going to help
you and may make you sick.
Fatigue is a frequent com
plaint when people cut down
on their calories too much.

WASHINGTON (UPI) - Vice
President Gerald R. Ford has
publicly urged President Nixon
to reveal information on two
Watergate-related matters —
the ITT and milk fund con

“I think the White House
ought to get these documents
out and make them available to
the public,” Ford said. “I think
it will increase public support
for his position above that at
the present time.”
White House sources have
been quoted recently as indicat
ing the administration has had
a change of heart about its
“Operation Candor” and that
some information which had
been expected to be released
will be withheld.
Interviewed Sunday on
NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Ford
said he had favored Nixon’s
disclosing his income tax
returns and other financial
information “And I hope and
trust, despite what I understand
is some reluctance at the
present time, that the President
will continue with Operation
Candor, with a full disclosure

The ITT controversy involves
whether a $400,000 contribution
by a subsidiary of the

both cases.
He said he believes most
Republican members of Con

People don’t realize that a
pound of separable lean of
round steak only contains 600
calories. That is why it is
good for a diet, but the end
result is eating a lot of food
without getting too many
calories. Some of these diets
upset the body chemistry so
much that the person com

Despite public claims to the

many calories your body uses

eat, unless you are sick. An
untreated diabetic, for exam

To a sensible diet program
I would suggest you add a
daily exercise program. You
can start with walking. Build
into your life style at least a

a $10.4 million supplemental
spending bill for the current
budget.
The House and Senate appro

the work and avoid the usual
mid - session recess.
The two spending packages

ceremony
tonight
ATLANTA (UPI) — Maynard
Jackson will be inaugurated as
the 47th mayor of Atlanta Mon
day, the first black man ever
to hold the office.
His swearing-in at the Civic
Center will be a “people’s”
ceremony of pageantry and
song, foregoing for the first
time the traditional ceremony
at City Hall.
Thousands are expected to at
tend the event, at which the
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
and a 250-voice chorus from
Georgia State, Spelman, Geor
gia Tech, Morris Brown and
Morris Brown and Morehouse
colleges will perform. Opera
singer Mattiwilda Dobbs, Jack
son’s aunt, will sing a few selec

Officials say the inaugural is
expected to cost almost $2,000,
but the citizens group which
planned the affair says private
donations already have covered
the cost.
City Council President Wyche
Fowler and 18 city councilmen
will also be sworn in, as a new
city charter goes into effect re
placing the old Board of Aider
men with a City Council and
the vice mayor with a council
president.
The 35-year-old Jackson, a
native of Dallas, Tex., defeated
Mayor Sam Massell in a runoff
last October with 59.2 per cent
of the vote.
Jackson, a graduate of More

and the like.
Then, don’t expect mira
cles to happen. It should take
several months to lose very
much weight. It comes off
about as slowly as it goes on.
Above all, don’t overdo it so
much you feel tired or ill. We
all need food to feel our best.
When we feel well, it is easier
to be active and that helps
build a healthy program to
stay slim as opposed to the
starved and skinny or feast
and fat cycle so many people
go through.

Doctors hopeful
WASHINGTON (UPI) -
Physicians are optimistic that
X-ray treatments have cured
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, Il-
Minn., of any danger stemming
from a minute tumor on his
bladder even if it turns out to
be malignant.
The 62-year-old former vice
president rested comfortably
Sunday at Bethesda Naval
Hospital where he underwent
follow-up tests to the X-ray
treatments he began in Novem
ber. He is expected to be
released during the week.
Dr. Edgar Berman, Hum
phrey’s personal physician,
reported him in excellent
spirits and said he undoubtedly
would be ready for the
reconvening of the Senate on
Jan. 21. A fuller check on the
tumor will be conducted in
early March to determine if it
has persisted or has been
eradicated by the X-ray
procedure.
