Bing gives up pipe
SPOKANE, Wash. (UPI) — Bing Crosby has given up g
pipesmoking because of lung problems he suffered in
January. $
That’s not the only reason. ‘ ‘lt was a nuisance —what a
nuisance,” Crosby said Thursday. “All those pipe
cleaners and paraphernalia it takes to keep it going. ” j:-
His wife, Kathryn, said her husband’s new status as a
nonsmoker was “good for the rug, too.”
Crosby said he put his pipe aside in January when he
underwent surgery for removal of an abscess in his lung.
The couple was here to launch a drive to raise $6 million
for Gonzaga University, Crosby’s alma mater.
Cooper approved
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The Senate approved the
nomination Thursday of former Sen. John Sherman £
Cooper, R-Ky., as this country’s first ambassador to East £
Germany.
The United States established diplomatic relations with g
East Germany last week.
The Senate also confirmed the nominations of former £
child movie star Shirley Temple Black as ambassador to £
Ghana and Kenneth Rush as ambassador to France. £

Ford’s former home-town law partner and White House
counsel, was elevated to Cabinet rank Thursday. £
John W. Hushen, deputy press secretary, said Buchen, £
Ford’s law partner in Grand Rapids, Mich., and an old £
friend, was being promoted “in recognition of his £
talents.” £
He was the President’s Representative in negotiating a 8
pardon for former President Richard Nixon. £
Carter wants governors
included in meeting
ATLANTA (UPI)-Gov. Jim
my Carter, just home from the
SouthemGovemor’sConference
in Texas, urged President Ford
Thursday to include governors
in the national economic sum
mit meeting later this month.
“The economy is the number
one problem facing our nation,’’
said a Carter resolution signed
by other Southern governors at
the Lakeway, Tex. conference.
“For too long, the economic
decisions affecting our country
have been made without ade
quate consultation.”
The resolution called on Pres
ident Ford to let the nation’s
governors “play a major role”
in any economic strategy devel
oped at any summit involving
federal officials, labor and bus
iness leaders, investors, con
sumers, economists and others.
“The Southern governors fur
ther believe that a major as
pect of any economic plan must
be an effort to produce a more
equitable distribution of the
burdens of our economic prob
lems across all segments of our
society and all the regions of
our country," Carter’s resolu
tion said.

Carter brought home other
resolutions he had gotten his
fellow chief executives to sign,
including a salute to the na
tion’s bicentennial observance
and a plea for the National
Aeronautics and Space Admin
istration (NASA) and U.S. De
partment of the Interior to use
high-altitude photo equipment
to snap ecological maps of the
Southeast.
The resolution proposed that
a weather - free observance of
Southeastern ecosystems be
made with infrared photography
from an orbiting platform or
high-flying plane. Carter said
taking the survey state-by-state
is a wasteful approach, and
suggested the federal govern
ment make an infrared natural
resources map stretching from
Delaware to Oklahoma.
“Photographs produce from a
high altitude platform will
provide the states with informa
tion vital to any regional and
statewide natural-resources
and economic planning ef
forts,” Carter said.
