Lost his pants too
HUNTINGTON WOODS,
Mich. (UPI) — James Lanni
lost more than the election
earlier this month.
In his $2,263 campaign
expense account filed Friday,
the 29-year-old Republican said
he also lost his pants —to a dog
— during door-to-door cam
paigning last month.
His expenses, he said, includ
ed $18.50 for a new pair of
pants and $2.48 for bandages
and antiseptics to care for the
dog bites.
“I guess that dog was a
Democrat,” Lanni said.
Satellites go off tonight
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.
(UPI) — An Intelsat communi
cations satellite was poised to
lead off a two-night space
launch spectacular at this
moonport tonight.
An Atlas Centaur rocket
carrying the Intelsat IV is
scheduled for firing at 6:44 p.m.
(EST). Skynet 11, a British
military communications
satelite, is set for launch aboard
a Delta rocket at 7:38 p.m.
Friday.
Space scientists plan to
“park” the Intelsat IV 22,300
miles above the Pacific Ocean
in a stationary orbit by firing a
motor board the space craft
Saturday night. It will be the
sixth in a series of advanced
commercial communicatons sa
tellites providing a global space
network for the International
Telecommunications Satellite
consortium.
The Intelsat IV mission will
cost about $33 million—s2o
million for the Atlas Centaur
rocket plus the launch costs.
Porno man
begins
sentence
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UPI)
— Convicted Atlanta porogra
phy dealer Michael G. Thevis
will begin serving his six-month
prison sentence Dec. 2 at the
federal correctional facility in
Lexington, Ky.
Thevis has been fighting the
sentence for four years, but
U.S. District Judge Gerald B.
Tjoflat Wednesday denied a
motion to put him on probation
instead.
Thevis is partially paralyzed
from a motorcycle accident and
the defense said jail confine
ment would be a hardship on
him and a waste of taxpayers
money.
Thevis was convicted in 1970 of
transporting 234 obscene maga
zines across state lines and was
accused by the prosecution of
being the top pornography
dealer in the Southeast

WOODBURY, Ga.—A dog pines for his destroyed home after an early morning tornado
ripped through this small community destroying six mobile homes and injuring scores of
persons. The tornado touched down in several places, but most of the damage seem to be
centered in the Woodbury area. (UPI)
The launch of Skynet 11,
however, provided more in
terest because it represents a
last chance mission in the
project to give the British
military its own, private space
switchboard over the Indian
Ocean for military com
munications.
The British have sunk SSO
million into the Skynet pro
gram, including about $10.5
million to be paid the United
states for Friday night’s rocket
and launch. Two previous
attempts to put a Skynet
satellite into orbit have failed
in the past four years.

COSTLY DISCOVERY
BRISTOL, England (UPI) -
No one knew there was an
electric meter hidden in a back
room at Ashton Gate, the
stadium used by England
Second Division soccer club
Bristol City.
But the meter was there and
it was ticking away and when
Electricity Board officials dis
covered it by chance recently
they realized no one had read it
for more than 10 years.
The result? A 5,000-pound
($12,000) electricity bill for
Bristol City’s fan club.
“They used the electricity,
didn’t they?” said a board
official.
