Questions
The questions the League asked the candidates to
answer are as foUows:
1. What particular training and experience have you
had that would qualify you for this office?
2. In serving as a school board member, what would be
your priorities for the system? (limit to 5)
3. Would you support another school bond referendum in
the near future and if so, what would you Include in it 9

public and the school system can be improved?
5. Have you studied the system (a) by visiting the
schools, (b) discussion with the administration? (c)
visiting the school board meetings (d) other?
Byway of review, these were the questions and answers
submitted to school board candidates by the League of
Women voters in an election which wound up with two
runover races. Dan Boyd and Yvonne Langford are
nmover candidates for Post Seven. Virginia Allison and
Bill Westmoreland are runover candidates for Post 10.
The runover election will be next Tuesday.

Library for Griffin and Spalding
County.
I worked actively on the
educational committee for this
campaign. I was a P T. A.
Board member while my
children were at the elementary
level and also was a Cub Scout
Den Mother.
As a member of the Citizens
Committee to study school
facilities I became further
enlightened on facts and figures
of school operation. I was
selected Young Woman of the
Year in 1973.
My most important
qualification is three children in
the school system that I care
about and am concerned about,
years.
2. (1) Reduce the existing
overcrowded conditions in the
schools and classrooms. (Not
all schools and classrooms are
overcrowded at the present
time.)
(2) Offer more vocational
subjects on both the Junior High
and High School levels.
(3) Work toward better
communication between the
parents, teachers, and school
administration.
(4) Better equip those
classrooms and schools where
teaching aids and facilities are
below par and insure that
textbooks and other in
structional materials are
programs to develope the
highest potential of the student,
(b) provide facilities that will
house programs that needed
and those that are required by
law. (c) continue to provide the
best qualified faculty possible in
each school. (d) State funding of
APEG to provide a more
adequate program of education
SECOND HOUSE
SEATTLE, Wash. (UPI) —
The Seattle Repertory Theater
will expand its activities this
winter by opening a second
house in a downtown building
that once was the Town and
Country Club. Emphasis at the
new place will be on innovative,
experimental drama by new
playwrights.
BRECHT ON AGENDA
STRATFORD, Ont. (UPI) —
The Stratford Festival Theater
will open its season next
summer with Bernard Shaw’s
“Saint Joan” on June 9.
Shakespeare’s works to be
presented are “Twelfth Night”
and “Measure for Measure.”
Also, Bertolt Brecht’s “Trum
pets and Drums” is on the
agenda.
(5) Seek more state support
for schools.
3. Yes — If the community
desires to upgrade and expand
the educational facilities.
Present costs dictate that we
must be economical in what
ever action we take; however,
careful study of the schools
present needs should be made
before any building program is
launched.
It is concern for their education
and the education of every child
that fostered my interest in
running for the School Board.
2. 1. Discipline, 2. Teacher
Morale, 3. Student-Teacher
ratio-including additional
facilities to allow adequate
reduction, 4. Curriculum and
quality education for EVERY
student, 5. Public relations
between Administration, School
Board Members and Parents.
3. Yes - I would include
everything that was included in
. the last referendum. I realize
that additional property taxes
are not popular at this time.
However, until such time as
additional sources for funding
available at the beginning of the
school year or quarter.
(5) Better discipline:
discipline is always a problem
in school systems and hopefully
some of our problems can be
contained by reaching the
above goals. However, I feel we
need better discipline practices
and guidelines in our schools.
3. I would have to support
another school bond referen
dum of some form in the near
future as I see no other way to
solve some of the overcrowded
conditions in our system. At this
time I do not know whether a
new High School plant would be
the most economical way of
providing the equipment and
from kindergarten through the
twelfth grade, (e) State funding
for kindergarten construction
and secondary vocational
construction.
3. After additional local study,
then decide on future needs.

4. The key to communication
is two way. Communications
can be improved by parents: 1.
attending PTA, PTO and Open
House; 2. visiting schools; 3.
initiating conferences with
teachers; 4. attending board
meetings which are open to
public.
5. Yes, I have visited all the
. schools, talked with teachers
and administrators and attend-
are available we will have to
work with resources at hand.
Our schools are in need now and
unless relief comes from other
sources soon I would have to
support another referendum.
4.1 think public input into the
school system should be en
couraged. There should be more
cooperation between the news
media and school officials. We
must realize that schools are
operated with taxpayers money
and these taxpayers are entitled
to more openess from School
Board Members and the Ad
ministration. PTA’s and PTO’s
should be encouraged to take an
active part in School Board
meetings and should send
necessary classrooms for the
presently offered courses and
needed vocational courses. In
addition inadequacies of
classroom design and lab
equipment exist in our Junior
High Units. We also have
buildings in our system whose
age and design have made them
unsafe and inappropriate for
classroom instruction.
4. The school system needs to
give more information on
decisions made and why they
were made. This includes the
school board, superintendent’s
office and the principals and
teachers of the respective
schools. The public also needs to
be willing to spend more time
attend. Patrons of each school
should become more involved
with the problems and their
solution of their individual
schools. The news media should
continue their fine coverage of
the news of the Griffin-Spalding
County School System.
5. Asa member of the Griffin-
Spalding County Board of
ed school board meetings. Also I
have acquainted myself with
recommendations as outlined in
the comprehensive study and
have studied carefully the
educational objectives outlined
in APEG.
representatives to monthly
meetings. Parents should be
encouraged to talk with
teachers and principals
regarding specific and general
problems with their children
and the school system in
general.
5. The last three years I have
had an opportunity to visit in
every school in the school
system. While serving on the
Citizens Committee to study the
school facilities I heard from
many of the teachers, ad
ministration and school board
members and discussed with
them the facilities needs of the
system. I have attended school
board meetings.
and effort in understanding the
everyday workings of the school
system and the problems in
volved in running our schools.
Spalding County citizens have
the right and should demand
efficient use of their tax dollars
but they also have the
responsibility to provide a
sound educational system for
all students.
5. I have studied our system
by visiting in the schools and
through discussions with school
board members, school
superintendent, school prin
cipals, teachers, and parents.
Education for the past 12 years,
I’ve visited in the schools,
worked closely with the ad
ministration, attended school
board meetings and listened to
the patrons of the school system
for advise and counsel.
