TO THOSE CONCERNED ABOUT EDUCATION IN SPALDING COUNTY:
First, I want to thank everyone who worked and supported me in the
recent board of Education election.
In the course of the campaign I became acquainted with Yvonne
Langford and believe, because of her awareness and sincere interest, that
she will dedicate her efforts toward quality education.
Few of us voted just to win a post for a candidate, we voted to help
the children. Let's all go back on November 26th and cast our vote for
Yvonne Langford, to help fulfill our original purpose.
My sincere thanks to all of you,
a Jean Boq^s x

Torn ligaments
BALTIMORE (UPI) - Bal
timore Colts quarterback Bert
Jones has some torn ligaments
in his right shoulder, a
somewhat more serious ailment
than the severely bruised
shoulder team physicians first
thought he suffered three weeks
ago.
It was not clear what further
action Jones will see this year.
He hasn’t played since the
injury.
Spokesman Barry Jones said,
“Wednesday he threw, Thurs
day he didn’t throw in practice.
They’re bringing him along
slowly and there’s a possibility
he could play next week against
Buffalo.”
Quarterback Willie Jordan
passed for three touchdowns,
Randy Cooper scored one on a
four yard burst and tackle Mule
Crawford recovered four
fumbles here last night as the
Griffin Bears devastated the
Rockdale Bulldogs 27-7 to win
the Region 6-AAA cham
pionship and a berth in the state
playoffs.
The playoffs begin here next
Friday when the Bears host the
Lakeside Vikings, who beat
Henderson 14-3 last night to win
the Region 8-AAA cham
pionship.
An over-flow crowd at
Memorial Stadium saw the
Bears go through their “normal
routine.”

touchdown in the first quarter
then roared back to dominate
the Bulldogs.
Falling behind is not new to
Griffin. The Bears did it five
times in regular season and
came back to win.
Coach Max Dowis said before
the game that Griffin had to find
away to shutdown Rockdale’s
powerful wishbone attack.
Griffin not only defensed the
wishbone, but forced seven
turnovers (five fumbles and two
interceptions) and controlled
the ball, running 54 plays to
Rockdale’s 40.
“There’s just one word to
describe the effort,” Coach
Dowis said this morning. “That
word is great.”
“I don’t believe I’ve had a
defensive team to face such a
challenge. The boys knew the
challenge was there and they
were prepared to meet it. I can’t
say enough about our defensive
effort. It was great,” the coach
said.
Ends Carl Imes and Greg
Head kept tremendous pressure
on quarterback Don Bonner,
Rockdale’s sensational runner.

GILLMAN MAY RETIRE
HOUSTON (UPI) — Age and
reported budgetary battles with
the owner of the Houston Oilers
may make this the last season
for Coach Sid Gillman, the
Houston Chronicle reported
Friday.
Gillman, 53, declined com
ment on retirement, but at his
last Monday news conference
he did say, “I will have an
announcement shortly.”
Gillman’s friends and rela
tives said he was seriously
considering retirement, the
Chronicle reported.
Gillman’s two-year contract
expires at the end of this
season.
Griffin High plays
Jackson tonight
Griffin High will play four
return games against Jackson
High here today.
The “B” team action begins
at 4 p.m. with the Griffin and
Jackson girls. The “B” boys
play immediately after that
game.
The varsity competition
begins at 7 p.m. with the Griffin
and Jackson girls. The Bears
play Jackson about 8:15.
Three of the fourth teams
beat Jackson earlier this week.
The only loser was the “B”
girls.
The Bears opened their
season with a 74-45 victory. The
girls slipped by Jackson, 4644.
Coach Frank Hinson will start
Rockdale’s feared ground at
tack.
They were assisted by backs
Randy Cooper, Craig Nelms,
Johnny Wilder and Phillip
McCrary, who contained Rock
dale’s sweeps.
Rockdale came to Griffin
fearing the passing of Jordan.
That fear was justified.
The Bulldogs remembered
that Jordan completed nine of
10 passes for 123 yards in a
previous clash between the two
teams.
Jordan ripped Rockdale’s
pass defense to pieces, com
pleting nine of 14 passes for 138
yards and three touchdowns.
“Willie played a tremendous
game,” Coach Dowis said. “He
really threw some strikes.
We’re kind of use to him doing
that because he’s a winner,” the
coach said.
“We got a great effort out of
our runners. Johnny Roberts
and Randy Cooper played a
magnificant game.
“The offensive line did a good
job of protecting the passer and
opening holes in the Rockdale
defense,” the coach said.
The offensive line that did the
job on Rockdale consist of tight
end Kenny Ellison, split end
Johnny Wilder, tackles Jeff
Hunt and Joey Crosby, guards
David McDonald and Tom
Fetzer and center Scott Ross.
Griffin ran up 13 first downs
and had 249 total yards, 111
rushing and 138 passing.
Rockdale had 10 first downs
and 196 total yards, 171 rushing
amd 25 passing.
CoachDowis wasn’t surprised
that Griffin scored 27 points. He
was surprised that Rockdale
made only seven. The Bulldogs
had averaged nearly 35 points a
game since Griffin beat them
20-14 on Sept. 13.
“Although we were ready to
give our best defensive shot, we
were prepared to try and out
score them if it came down to
that,” the coach said.
That’s the reason Griffin
played a wide-open offense
from the beginning.
The over-flow crowd had just
settled down when Rockdale’s
Stan Davis picked off a Jordan
pass at the Griffin 10. Billy
Kelly plunged over from the two
for the TD. Jimmy Walden
kicked the extra point and
Rockdale was ahead 7-0 with
just over four minutes left in the
first quarter.
Rockdale kicked off. Joe
Bogan returned the kick to the
Griffin 25.
Jordan then carried the Bears
on a 75 yard touchdown drive.
Roberts, Cooper and Jordan
worked out two first downs to
the Rockdale 49 before Jordan
decided to take to the air.
He hit Phillip McCrary with a
14 yard strike to the 35.
After moving to the 21 on
running plays, Jordan whipped
a 21 yard touchdown pass to
tight end Kenny Ellison.
Jordan kicked the extra point
and the score was tied 7-7 with
10:58 left in the half.
Mule Crawford, who
recovered four fumbles, set up
Griffin’s next scoring effort
when he fell on a loose ball at
Kenneth Coggins and Terry
Dunn at forward, Ward
Simonton at center and Curry
Butler and Jere Moore at guard.

Roberts ripped off 14 yards to
the 19. Jordan then hit McCrary
with a 19 yard touchdown pass.
McCrary was hit at the five but
shook loose and scored. Jordan
kicked the extra point and
Griffin carried a 14-7 lead into
the second half.
Midway of the second quarter
McCrary stopped a Rockdale
drive with a fumble recovery at
the Griffin 43.
Johnny Wilder intercepted a
pass as the half closed.
Griffin’s defense went to work
immediately after the half
break.
Griffin kicked off and three
plays netted the Bulldogs just
nine yard. The visitors punted
to the Griffin 38.
Jordan then carried the Bears
on a 62 yard touchdown drive.
The drive featured the run
ning of Roberts, passing of
Jordan and receiving of Ellison
and McCrary plus some ex
cellent blocking by the Griffin
line.
After Roberts picked up 10
yards on three snaps, Jordan
fired a 17 yard pass to McCrary.
Griffin drew 15 and five yard
penalties on successive plays.
Griffin was faced with a first
and 30 situation. After a pass
fell incomplete, Jordan found
Ellison with a 16 yard pass. He
came right back with a 27
yarder to the tight end for a first
down at the Rockdale 15.
Roberts was dropped for a yard
loss but Jordan hit Ellison with
a 13 yard pass to the three.

Jordan was hit for a three
yard loss. A pass was in
complete. Roberts gained three.
Griffin called time out to
discuss a fourth and goal
situation.
Coach Dowis decided to let
Jordan throw for the three
yards.
He did just that. Jordan went
right and spotted McCrary in
the end zone. He fired a bullet
and McCrary held on despite a
jarring blow from a Rockdale
back.
The extra point kick was
wide, leaving Griffin with a 20-7
advantage.
Griffin’s defense took com
plete control of the game.
Crawford recovered a fumble
late in the third and two early in
the fourth.
Rockdale took a punt and
drove to the Griffin 49.
A five yard penalty, two in

loss (Tom Mason hit the
quarterback for the huge loss),
forced Rockdale into a fourth an
26 situation.
Rockdale needed points and
time was against them, so the
Bulldogs went for the first
down. The play gained only 12
yards and Griffin took
possession at the Bulldogs’ 45.
Randy Cooper rambled 30
yards on the first snap. He
gained four more to the 11.
Cooper finally scored from the
four with 44 seconds remaining.
Jordan kicked the extra point
and the Bears had their 27-7
victory.
Wilder intercepted his second
pass just before the game en
ded.
Coach Dowis was honored
following the game. He was
presented gifts and over $1,200
in money in appreciation for the
excellent job he has done since
becoming head coach here.
