SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -
The San Francisco 49ers are
nine-point favorites to beat
injury-ridden Atlanta Sunday
and provide a rough homecom
ing for Falcon Coach Marion
Campbell, a former 49er
player.
Rookie quarterback Tom
Owen guided the 49ers to a 34-0
blitz of Chicago last Sunday
and has an impressive record
for his 14 NFL quarters.
Owen has completed 51.8 per
cent of his passes for 890 yards
and now has the nod over
veterans Steve Spurrier and
Norm Snead, both ready to play
after recovering from injuries.
Spurrier suffered a shoulder
separation and has yet to see

his first NFL action this season
and Snead was out with a knee
injury.
Injuries also have hurt the
Falcons, who have dropped five
straight games. Atlanta’s 6-6
tackle Bill Sandeman was
sidelined after back surgery
and Art Malone and Dave
Hampton have missed action.
Falcon quarterback Bob Lee
lost the edge and was benched
for former Heisman Trophy
winner Pat Sullivan, who has
not starred as a pro but will try
again Sunday.
The Falcons bring a 2-8
record to Candlestick Park,
including a 16-10 loss to San
Francisco in the second game
of the season. Their hope is a
rushing attack against the
vulnerable 49er defensive line.
The now healed Hampton ran
62 yards against Baltimore last
Sunday for the club record of
2,260 yards rushing in fewer
than three full seasons.
San Francisco, troubled by
injuries to offensive linemen
Woody Peoples and Randy
Beisler, has had a faltering
rushing attack which accounts
in part for a 3-7 season record.
The aerial game is expected
to put points on the board,
however, provided Owen is able
to approach his 316-yard
passing performance last Sun
day against the Bears.
Holtz rejects

RALEIGH, N.C. (UPI) —
North Carolina State Coach Lou

Holtz told South Carolina
officials Thursday night he
would not accept a lucrative
offer to succeed Dietzel, who
ends his coaching career at the
today. Dietzel will remain as
the Gamecock athletic director.

MIAMI (UPI) - For the first
time in seven years, the Miami
Hurricanes have that comforta

from now on, there is a winning
season in the bank.
The Hurricanes defeated
Syracuse 14-7 Friday night,
assuring a winning season for
the first time since 1967.
Miami goes into the season
finale next Saturday against
Florida with a 64 record,
hoping for an upset of the
Sugar Bowl-bound Gators.
“I am very pleased about the
winning season. It means a lot
to this football team,” said
Coach Pete Elliott.
Miami scored on drives of 68
and 74 yards the first two times
the Hurricanes got the ball.
Fullback Alan Reynaud pound

the first score and with 2:08 left
in the first quarter, Larry
Bates swept right end for a
four-yard touchdown.
Miami threatened again,
moving to the Syracuse five
near the end of the half, but an
interception by Tim Moresco
halted the march.

Flames blow
3 point lead
ATLANTA (UPI) — An
elctrifying play by Buffalo’s Gil
Perrault in the 59th minute of
play between the Sabres and
the Flames Friday night erased
a point in the standings that
Atlanta had counted on and
gave Buffalo a point it had not
expected.
With Atlanta leading 4-3,
Perrault took the puck off the
boards at the centerline and
cars, a home and education for
his four children.
Although Holtz turned down
the Gamecock offer, he added,
“I won’t say I won’t ever leave
N.C. State. But right now I’m
looking forward to recruiting
outstanding players that will
allow us to continue what we
are doing here.”
Holtz, who is in the third year
of a five-year contract with
State, has produced one of
State’s finest football records of
26-8-1, including bowl trips for
the past three years.
second half. They threatened'
twice before scoring.
In the third quarter, Syracuse
moved to the Miami two before
being held on downs and in the
fourth period they were on the
Miami eight.
Finally, quarterback James
Donoghue led Syracuse on a 72-
yard drive on seven plays, with
the touchdown coming on an
eight-yard screen pass to
Robert Petchel.
Syracuse’s Larry King recov
ered the ensuing onside kick on
the Miami 46, but the Hurri
canes held on downs.
“They outplayed us in the
second half,” Elliott said. “But
I’m very proud of our defense
because of the big plays they
made.”
Coach Frank Maloney, in his
first year at Syracuse, said he
was equally proud of his team.
“Our theme tonight was to go
out as fighters' not as
quitters,” he said. “We fought
like hell in the second half and
I am proud of our team. We’re
not going to turn the world
around overnight, but we’re
going to get tougher as the
years go by.”
Maloney said the difference
in the game was his team’s
inability to move the ball when
it moved inside the Miami 10.
“All we needed was one key
block, but that’s the mark of a
great football team and obvi
ously we’re not great,” he said.

tion and in two long strides
Perrault lashed past him.
Perrault wheeled into the
goal mouth and flipped a back
handed shot past goalie Dan
Bouchard to give the Sabres a
4-4 tie in a game Atlanta had
led by three goals on two
different occasions.
“There’s no bleeping excuse
to lose a game when you have
a 4-1 lead,” Atlanta coach
Bernie Geoffrion fumed after
ward.
Buffalo coach Floyd Smith
was less emotional.
“We didn’t play too well in
the first and second periods,
but we picked it up in the
third,” he observed.
Atlanta jumped off to a 3-0
lead on two goals by Curt
Bennett and one by Price.
Buffalo’s Craig Ramsay
scored to make it 3-1 but Eric
Vail scored late in the second
period to give the Flames a 4-1
lead and they appeared on their
way to a gain of two points in
the standings.
The final period belonged to
Buffalo. The Sabres triggered
17 shots at Bouchard, and Rick
Dudley and Rene Robert scored
goals.
Snead gives
up post
as pro
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS,
W.Va. (UPI) - In 1936 Sam
Snead came over the hill from
Virginia to become golf pro at
The Greenbrier, but that 38-
year relationship came to an
end Friday.
The new management is
making some changes, and
wants a pro who’ll spend more
time around the resort.
The 62-year-old Slammer is a
man on the move and admits,
“I was gone a lot.” The parting
appears amiable, however, and
Snead says, “Everybody is
lovely.”
“I can come back anytime I
want to. My room will be here,
and I can play here anytime.
Everything is in harmony.”
Instead of a gold watch, they
gave Sam a lifetime member
ship in the Greenbrier Golf
Club.
Giving up the post because he
wanted to spend more time on
the PGA tour and “do more
hunting and fishing,” Snead
didn’t rule out the possibility of
hooking on with another club.
“Well, I’m open to a few
things,” Snead said, “if the
right deal comes along.”
