test Flynt
FAYETTE COUNTY NEWS
Two members of Fayette
County’s General Assembly
delegation have indicated an
interest in trying for John
Flynt’s Sixth District seat in
Congress, and two other
members are reportedly in

Representative Frank Bailey
of Riverdale confirmed
published reports that he was
considering the race, but said
he wouldn’t make any an
nouncement until some time
after the General Assembly
adjourns in March. State
Representative John Carlisle of
Griffin conceded that reports
of his interest had “been cir
culating.”
“I'm going to have a
statement on that next week,”
Carlisle said.

Bomb threat halts game
MARIETTA, Ga. (UPI) - A bomb threat interrupted
the Region V AAA basketball tournament at the Marietta
Civic Center Wednesday night.
Police received a call about 6 p.m. saying a bomb would
explode shortly at the center. A crowd of about 3,000,
watching the second game of the tournament, was
evacuated as police searched the building. Some players
were dressing and were forced to run outside wearing only
gym shorts.
No bomb was found. The game resumed after a 30-
minute delay.
Pepperell closes plant
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (UPI) — West Point Pepperell
announced Wednesday it will close its Milledgeville plant
effective at the end of March.
Plant manager Allen Mayberry said the plant, which
employs 60 people, was being closed because of the
“general economic conditions in the shoe industry and the
depressed prices of natural leather.”
The plant produced a substance used in the
manufacture of synthetic leather shoes and Mayberry
said the market “did not develop to the level anticipated.”
The plant has been open since 1974.

Bill asks 7 months of fast time
’ WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
, nation would operate under
seven months of daylight
saving time a year instead of
the present six if a bill passed
♦ by the Senate becomes law.
It was approved 70 to 23
Wednesday, and was sent to the
, House. But it is considered
unlikely the House will act on it
before the March 14 implemen
tation date provided in the bill.
Sponsors said the additional
month of “fast time" would
save energy and reduce traffic

Carlisle also said he un
derstood that state
Representative Jim West of
Jonesboro and State Senator
James “Duck” Hamilton were
thinking of running. He also
said his decision wouldn’t
depend on Flynt’s intentions.
Flynt has been rumored to be
considering retirement from
Congress and hasn’t declared
his candidacy for re-election
yet.
Neither West nor Hamilton
were available for comment.
Bailey wouldn’t put a time
limit on when his decision could
be expected.
“I’ve seriously looked into
this since April of last year and
I’ve had an awful lot of en
couragement throughout the
District,” he said.
accidents and street crime.
Critics cited dangers to
children waiting in the dark for
school buses and the hardship
fast time imposes on farmers
and on states which are split by
existing time zones.
The nation now is operating
under the Uniform Time Act of
1966, which mandates daylight
saving time from the last
Sunday in April to the last
Sunday in October, and will do
so this year unless the House
acts in the interim.
