Oil rig sinks; 22 rescued; 12 drown
PORT ARANSAS, Tex. (UPI)
— An oil rig under tow with an
estimated 36 men aboard
capsized and sank late Thurs
day in stormy seas in the Gulf
of Mexico.
A survival capsule carried on
the rig also capsized and the
Coast Guard said some of the
12 men in it drowned during the
night.
Coast Guard spokesman Dave
Cipra said 22 persons were
rescued, including the captain
who was plucked off the rig by
a helicopter 15 seconds before it
sank under the 12 to 16 foot
seas.
But the rest of those aboard
were either lost or trapped in
the one of the two liferaft-type
survival capsules carried on the
rig. It was one of those
capsules which overturned.
Cipra said Navy divers,
probably operating off the
aircraft carrier USS Lexington,
entered the capsule before
dawn to try to right it.
“They were unable to see
very well, but they said there
were some bodies in there,”
Cipra reported.
Cipra said the captian of the
rig radioed the Coast Guard at
8 p.m. Thursday that he was
having difficulty with the 166-
foot-long, 100-foot wide rig. A
half hour later he radioed that
all hands were abandoning the
rig.
Cipra said the first helicopter
arrived at 9 p.m. and apparent
ly all of those aboard but the
captain had scrambled into one
of the capsules and the rig was
sinking rapidly. The helicopter
moved in over the rig, Cipra
said, and lowered a basket to
the captain. He got into it and
was hoisted to safety. Before he
reached the helicopter the rig
had disappeared.
“We got word from a tugboat
out there,” the Coast Guard
said, “that 19 people entered
the capsule (which capsized).”
He said seven swam away from
it when it first encountered
trouble and were rescued.
“That leaves 12 in the
capsule. The two others are
unaccounted for, but we aren’t
sure whether there are two
more or not. In a situation like
this we can’t count on any
figures being correct.”
It was possible that some of
those dozen men had left the
capsule and were in the open
water. He said a fullscale
search was underway for any
signs of life on the surface.
Cipra said the Coast Guard
had given up on trying to turn
the capsule back over and
would attach lines to it and
haul it aboard the Lexington.
The Coast Guard said rescue
efforts during the night were
delayed by 12 to 16 foot waves
kicked up by thunderstorms.
The waves dropped to eight feet
after daylight.
The incident occurred 30
miles east of Port Aransas.
“The capsule is shaped like a
flying saucer you might say,”
said Stan Cristman, another
Coast Guard spokesman. “It’s
about 14 feet in diameter and
nine feet high. It’s bright
