Love and war in
age differences
By L, M. BOYD
Item No. 863A in our Love and War man’s file on
matrimonial happiness reads: “If the husband is more
than 10 years older than the wife, odds run 4 to 1 against
wedded bliss. If the wife is more than 5 years older than
the husband, odds run 9 to 1 against a successful
marriage. But if the ages of the husband and wife are
within 4 years of each other, it makes little difference
who’s older.”

BERLIN
Q. “Who made the World War II decision to stop the
Allied forces at the Elbe River in Germany and let Josef
Stalin’s Soviet troops take Berlin?”
A. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Declassified documents
show he unwittingly gave Stalin the go-ahead in a strategy
message. Historians now know it wasn’t a political
decision from Washington, D. C. as many once believed.
Q. “What’s the difference between ‘thoroughbred,’
‘purebred’ and ‘pureblood’?”
A. Thoroughbred horses, purebred dogs and pureblood
cows, that’s the way the words are used, according to our
Language man. Otherwise, they all mean the same: in
each case, bred from parents of the same recognized
breed.
KICK THE BUCKET
More than one curious customer has asked why we
came to use “kick the bucket” as a synonym for dying.
Numerous suicides once stood on buckets to get the
necessary altitude to hang themselves. After adjusting
the nooses and tightening the ropes over tree limbs,
rafters or whatever, they kicked those buckets out of the
way.
The master bathroom on the yacht of the late Aristotle
Onassis had a one-way mirror for its door so Mr. Onassis
from the inside could see everything in the master
bedroom. Why he installed such a gimmick was never
explained.

Ramps at curbs
The other day in downtown Griffin a

Fire away!
In order to inform all voters as fully as
possible, the Griffin Daily News will
publish a question and answer column
about the school bond referendum.
Questions will be answered by school
authorities and the column will appear on
Fridays starting Sept. 30. They should be
submitted to Education ’77 which is the
group advocating the issue in care of P. O.
Box 711, Griffin.
Although the advocates of the issue are
collecting the questions, we have been
assured that school officials will answer
them to the best of their ability factually.
They are limited by no means to “friend

So fire away.

people whose contributions will be mostly
negative. Society has to make provision
for them.
All in all, there is no standing still; either
we grow and move up or we dwindle and
slip back. This growth is not necessarily
good in itself, it does provide opportunities
for good.
Generally speaking Spalding and Griffin
are meeting the problems of growth well
and are fortunate not to have to contend
with the far worse problems of decline.
prophet like Elijah just before the Messian
would come, “before the coming of the
great and dreadful day of the Lord”
(Malachi 4:5). Jeuss identified John as
that prophet (see Matthew 11:13-14).
One of the most important things to
realize is that Jesus is not just another
prophet, as some people have claimed.
Even in Jesus’ own day some people saw
Him as a prophet; when Jesus asked His
disciples who men said He was , they
replied, “Some say that thou art John the
Baptist: some, Elijah; and others,
Jeremiah, or one of the prophets” (Mat
thew 16:14). But He is greater than any of
the prophets. He is “the Christ, the Son of
the living God” (Matthew 16:16).
That is why Jesus Christ is not only
worthy of our admiration, but of our
worship and our service. That is why He,
and He alone, can take away our sins. As
John himself, said, “Behold the Lamb of
God, which taketh away the sin of the
world” (John 1:29).
The tomahawk
falls on Cats
BY JAMES STEWART
News Executive
Football is in the air and now that some of the favorites
have been established, it becomes the time for upsets.
One of those upsets was two Friday nights ago when the
Murray County Indians scalped arch-rival Dalton, 9-0,
knocking Dalton off its Number 1 rating in AA.
Coach Bill Chappell’s Dalton Catamounts had been
impressive the previous week in their meeting with
Rossville. Dalton had held Rossville out of the end zone in
posting a 21-0 victory.
Many Griffin fans will remember the powerhouse teams
Rossville produced several years ago. Rossville teams
were tough then and they still are. Any team that defeats
Rossville deserves every yard it gains.
Those same Griffin fans will remember the powerful
teams they played in Dalton. There again, Dalton did not
yield yardage. If the opponent got anything, they had to
take it.
But, Murray County. Griffin has never played Murray
County and had no reason to play the team in a county of
13,500 people.
Dalton played a tough schedule that included Murray
County each year. Year after year, Dalton was assured of
winning the Murray County game, although there was a
couple of close calls through the years.
The Indians apparently were up for the Catamounts this
year and broke the 26-year jinks Dalton had held over
them. Also with the loss went Dalton’s possibilities of
a perfect season and the team’s number one rating.
Dalton immediately dropped 7th in the AP ratings.
Coach Chappell took the blame for the loss, saying that
he apparently had not prepared his team well enough for
the Murray County encounter. He also stated that his
Catamounts did not look like the same team that played
Rossville the week before.
Many teams have a couple of wins under their belts now
and players and coaches get the feeling they are the king
of the mountain. It is that time of the year for some team
to come along and knock them from their place among
the elite.
Overconfidence is one of the terms coaches like to use
when their team falls to some lowly contender. That’s part
of the case. The other part is that the so-called lowly
teams may not be as weak as they seem. There are some
powerful teams in classes AA, A and B. Not all of the
power is in AAA.
Chappell took the blame for his team’s loss to Murray
County. This also means he is taking the blame for his
team being knocked from the No. 1 spot in AA. He failed
and his team failed.
Too many coaches are quick to blame the mistakes of
their players for their own inadequacies. There are times,
however, when the mistakes of players make a good
coaching job look bad. Here, the blame should be placed
on the players.
The players can’t do it by themselves and the coaches
can’t take the full load. Blame must be shared for most
losses.
As the season grows older, more and more of the small
teams will be gaining valuable experience and will be
searching for ego boosters. They love nothing better than
upsetting the championship plans of one of the
powerhouse teams.
Teams have to be prepared and ready for each op
ponent. There cannot be any weak spots. If there are, the
opponents will find them.
Teams and coaches not prepared find themselves in the
category with the Dalton Catamounts and Bill Chappell
who saw a 26-year reign come to a close because of their
own mistakes and because a team was not as weak as it
was thought to be.
