One American was among the cap tives still aboard the plane. Just before leaving Damascus, the hijackers told the control tower the rest of the hostages would be released at their Missionary raps capitulation 1 DACCA, Bangladesh (AP) —An American missionary among the hostages freed from the hijacked Japanese airliner condemned the Japanese government’s capitulation to the demands of the five terrorists. Jenabe Caldwell, 51, of Anchorage, Alaska, said the ordeal aboard the plane was “pretty horrendous, terribly, terribly brutal, but I wouldn’t have let those guys go.” “The minute we give in to criminals we’re finished, and that’s just what we’re doing," said Caldwell in a telephone interview from the Holy Family Hospital. Now’s the time to get ready for winter months First of 2 parts. Cold weather is just around the comer and utility people are urging consumers to prepare their homes for energy conservation or face mounting bills through the winter months. Major repairs and renovation are not necessary to prepare a home for the winter months. The good side of the energy con servation measures for the consumer is that most take little time and are relatively inexpensive. Also, most of the energy conservation measures can be taken by the consumer. If professional help is necessary, the consumer should contact the utility for a survey to determine actually what is DAI WS Daily Since 1872 Presbyterians have historic service final destination. But they did not disclose where that would be. There was speculation that if Algeria refused to give the terrorists refuge, they would turn to Libya or South Yemen, two Arab countries with radical governments which have ac cepted hijackers and other terrorists in the past. The hijackers are members of the ultraleftist Japanese Red Army which works closely with the radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The jetliner flew to. the Middle East Sunday after a 4%day siege at the airport in Bangladesh, Dacca, and re fueled at Kuwait and Damascus. The takeoff from the Syrian capital was delayed while Japanese and Syrian officials tried to get more hostages released, but the hijackers refused. There were 156 persons aboard when the terrorists seized control of the Paris-to Tokyo plane early Wednesday after it took off from Bombay. The hijackers freed 115 of their hostages in Dacca, seven more in Kuwait and 10 in Damascus. That left 12 captive passengers and the crew of seven aboard along with the five hi jackers and six terrorists freed from Japanese prisons in response to the hijackers’ demands. The Japanese government also paid a ransom of $6 million. needed before getting involved in ex penses that may be unnecessary and may not conserve energy. One of the first recommended energy conservation measures is a check of the heating system to determine if it is producing the maximum amount of heat for the least money. Several things can keep the unit from operating efficiently. Filters in the system should be checked and replaced if necessary. Also, heating ducts should be checked to determine if there are leaks. They can be stopped by using duct tape which is available at most hardware, building supply and some discount stores. Furniture and drapes should be arranged so they do not impede the flow of warm air through the home. Improperly placed furniture and drapes can impair the efficiency of the system. Fan motors in heating units should be checked to make sure they are operating properly. Generally, the owner’s manual will show the proper method for oiling the motor. The motor uses less energy if it operates smoothly. Other energy saving recom mendations include: 1. Make sure windows are closed tight. In addition, pull down shades and close drapes. This helps keep indoor Carter holding oil levy hike as alternate WASHINGTON (AP) - President Carter is considering a $5-a-barrel levy on imported oil if Congress scraps his plan to raise domestic crude oil taxes, according to his top energy adviser. The import fee would raise gasoline prices five to seven cents a gallon, the same increase envisioned by the Presi dent’s original proposal, Energy Secretary James R. Schlesinger said Sunday. “We are in this ludicrous position in which we are subsidizing every barrel of oil that comes into the country,” Schlesinger said. “That is the reason the (domestic) equalization tax was proposed. If Congress fails to enact that tax, the President must consider other alterna tives.” Schlesinger said the President could raise taxes on imported oil under the Trade Adjustment Act without having to get congressional approval. Schlesinger said the $5-a-barrel import tax would, by raising gasoline prices, have the same energy-saving effect as a |2.50-a-barrel tax on domestic crude. Schlesinger said the United States “cannot afford” to continue importing $45 billion worth of oil, the projected total for this year. heat from leaking outside and restricts the cold radiation from the window. 2. Traffic control. Needless opening of outside doors in the winter lets out warm air and lets in an equal amount of cold air. Remind little ones to close the door behind them and keep in-and-out trips within reason. 3. Insulate. Six inches or more is recommended for ceilings. This is available in batts or rolls or can be blown in by commercial firms. Wall and floor insulation also is recom mended. Three and one-half inches is the standard thickness for walls and floors. 4. Caulk. The first half will be devoted to trials of civil cases. The criminal session will begin Oct. 17. Twenty-three new grand jurors were sworn. They will inspect all county offices and will make several appoint ments. A large number of criminal indictments are expected to be returned. Since most of the jurors are serving for the first time, Judge Andrew Whalen, Jr., explained how they were chosen and went over their duties in detail. The grand jury will appoint a judge to the Small Claims Court of Spalding County. Judge Johnny Clements who is end ing his first 4-year term has asked to be reappointed. The court was created by the Georgia Legislature and became operative Jan. 1,1974. It handles claims up to SI,BOO. Storm windows and doors. These may help cut your heating bill as much as 20 percent and will pay for them selves in a short time. Storm windows and doors are not recommended in the area where the furnace is located. The furnace needs some fresh air. 7. Chimneys. Dampers should be closed when the chimney is not in use. Just as the chimney draws air when a fire is burning, it draws the heat from the home when there is not a fire.
