LOVEJOY, Ga. (AP) - Some
people seek public office, but
others, like Mrs. Bertha John
son, say it’s almost thrust upon
them.
“Somebody had to run,” Mrs.
Johnson said after being elected
mayor of Lovejoy by a vote of
18-9 Saturday.
No one in the Clayton County
town of 276 persons was on the
ballot for the office, so Mrs.
Johnson reluctantly entered the
race after waiting until the last
minute of Friday’s 8 p.m. ex
tended qualifying deadline.
Deputy Sheriff Raymond
Purcell had announced for
mayor, but withdrew last week
after learning of a county rule
that forbids civil service em
ployes from holding public
office.
