The hill to provide for the extension of
tho Cumberland road, was yesterday or
dered to be engrossed for a third reading,
in the House of Representatives, by a so
lemn decision, exhibiting a majority of
twelve votes in its favor. There is little
doubt of its passage in that body, along
with the bill authorizing a subscription to
the stock ofthe Chesapeake and Delaware
Canal, which, like the other, is now depen
ding nil its third reading.
In like manner awaits its third reading,
the bill for the relief of sufferers by Iosb of
property destroyed during the late war—

Engine and Mill, it is said, would not ex
ceed 2000 dollars. By its cheapness it will
be an acquisition on plantations that are de
ficient of water for impelling machinery
it can be applied to any purpose, especially
to ginning, grinding, pounding, &c,
A fire broke out at 2 o’clock of tho morn
ing of the 23d ult. at St. Augustine, in the
house occupied by Mrs. Campbell as a boar
ding house, whish destroyed the Custom-
House, and two others before it was oxtin
guished. The loss is estimated a - . $20,000.
A Mr. Warburg was much injured by being
compelled to precipitate himself a distance
of 40 or 50 feet from the roof of the house
in which the fire originated.
By the verdict of a Jury, after two days

active and sales extensive, say about 5000
hales of all sorts ; partly for export,
partly on speculation, and some for home
use. For the last two dayB prices have

considerable lot of Petersburg Cotton
brought 16, on time. We therefore advance
nnr quotations. Upland, 14 a 16 ; Louisia
na, 16i a 19 ; Sea-Island 24 a 30 ; Tenes-
sce 14 a I5j; Alabama 14 a 16. The poor
est sorts of Uplands are out of market—we
consequently have no quotations for them.
Rice—Importation 566 tierces, t9 half
tierces. The sales of this article have been
pretty extcnsiv|, and as the demand has
been chiefly for the best qualities, the mar
ket has become bare of every kind that can
be called prime. The sales have been up
wards of 1000 tierces from $2 46 a 3 34 per
100 lbs- on the usual credit. As it seems a
general wish ofthe dealers for us to quote
by the 100 lbs. we shall, in future, gratify
them. Rice, old and ordinary, 2 46 a 2 66;
do, new, middling to prime. 3 12 a 3 34.
Exchange.—Bills on London, which ad
vanced 1 a 1} per cent, immediately on the
withdrawal of the U. S. Bank from the mar
ket, have declined a little and are now worth
