The Stomach Pump This instrument
was successfully employed in this city on
Monday evening last, in the case of a person
named Ryley, who drunk off atone draught
a pint of raw gin, and, whilst endeavoring to
swallow two glasses of rum directly after
wards, fell as though shot to the. floor.—
The man was instantly carried home, and
put tn bed, and the n assistance of Mr. Wea

obtained. The power of swallowing was
completely destroyed, so that the usual me,
thodof administering emetics waa unavail

by exciting the fauces with a feather. Un
der theae distressing circumstances, it was
determined to Bend to the Infirmary for the

been formed of.Ui.ia novel, though really aer

appointment of Commissioners may perhaps
serve to give popularity, in New-Jereey, to
the executive who so strongly recommends
it; but that is a consideration which is, wo
should hope, and certainly ought to be se
condary to tho public good. No benefit, as
we apprehend, can accrue from such a
course, while it may do evil by exciting fal
lacious hopes; for wo take it to be a self-
evident proposition that the state of N. York
never will, never ought to yield up her ex
clusive sovereignty over the waters of the
Hudson, and less than that will not satisfy
N. Jersey. The object of this latter state
is, in seeking to establish the claim, to be a*
ble to mtoke a port, of entry at Powles Hook
to own and let out tho fisheries on that
shore and to avoid the quarantine laws.—
But these objects, injurious as they would
be both to this state and to the revenue of
the general government, would he even less
pernicious than the facilities which would
be given by an ideal water line bounary,
to every sort of robberry, depredation and
crime on the Hudson. Wo trust the as-
