after a passage of 21 days troin the Capes
of the Cliesapoak. Mr. Poinsett, minister to
Mexico, landed with hi*? suit on the 5th, and
was received ut Vera Cruz, in very hand

Mexico, where he will probably arrive by

place far Cuba, in the course ol'two days.
The Castle of St. Juau do Ulloa still
holds out and can do so as long as it can bo
relieved from the Havana. It is an im
mensely strong fortress, and cannot be ap
proached either by land or water, as it is
surrounded by extensive and dangerous
reefs except on the side nexi to Vera Crux,
from which it is distant not more than half
a mile.

tals of the several Southern States, Rich
mond, Raleigh,Columbia, Milledgcville, and

The Crops—The injury done the farmers
is lamentable ; the wheat crop is supposed
to be shortened from one-third to one-half;

A portable pump or fire extinguishing
engine, which, possessing a rotatory motion,
may be moved by wind or by the hand, has
been recently invented in G. Britain. It'
is of much greater importance than most of
the inventions of the kind which have as
yet been offered to the public. A moderate
sized one will raise water from a ship’s hold,
thirty feet, at the rate of two tons a minute.
It will preserve ships from deeuying, as, by
ventilation, it keeps them sweet. Tho en
gine moves with such velocity, that the in
ventor Ims succeeded in raising water with
one destitute of the lower boxes. Eight
men can raise two tons of water a minute
with thorn. They are not expensive.
