In this perilous predicament, after a brief
consultation, one of the best marksmen
was placed at tho extremity of the bowsprit,
armed with the fatal harpoon. Eoniewli.it
tired with his sport, Mr. Leviathan settled
down in the customary way for relaxation—
and the vessel appeared to remain stationa

At day-light it was ascertained that the

they lead to the supposition tiyit the animal
had considerable protuberances on the back;
the body o! each Vcrtabnu is nt least twen
ty inches in diameter, and ns many in length
—the tube or calibre, for containing the
spinal marrow is six inches in diameter,
some of the arterial ami nervous indenta
tions. or courses, are yet visahle. There is
a bone similar lo our os calcis, one foot in
length and, l suppose, eight inches in dia
meter. From all those circumstances, it
wns evidently an aninial that surpasses any
that history has made us acquainted with
in the animal kingdom. If tho skeleton wns
collected, and the bones all put in entire
it would compensate ns for a pilgrimage at
least to Mecca.

Latfst from St. Duminoio.—'We learn
by the schooner E!iza-Pigg«at. captain Da
vis, in twelve days from the City of Do
mingo, that, it was reported that a piratical
vessel was seen near the Island Saoni, south
side of St. Domingo, and near tho Mona
Passage, and that tho government was about
to despatch a vessel in search of her.
Markets at St. Domingo were completely
overstocked with all kinds of American pro
duce. An immense quantity of mahogany
hno been lost upon the coust, in consequence
ofthe incessant rains. A number of Eng
lish and Dutch vessels were lying iu port
waiting for cargoes. Severul vessels had
been upon the const for mahogany, and had
returned to the city with but very little on
board.
We subjoin two extracts from the Frank
lin (Missouri) Intelligencer, outlie subject
of t he Mexican trade. The first details the
progress—if that can be called progress
which amounts to merely an outset ofthe
large trading party from Missouri to Santa
Fe. There appears to have been some dis
cordance amongst them, if wo may draw
such an inference from the early separation
ofthe party. The safety of tlie expedition
can only bo guarrautced by its superiority
iu number over any vagrant tribe which it
may encounter ; and wisdom should huve
suggested the propriety of keeping the hotly
entire. Tlie statement relative to tliq fall
ing off of the trade at Basso del Norte has
not taken us by surprise. Such will al
ways be the case in a new and limited mur-
ket, when enterprize has just discovered it.
New vent* will soon carry off tho superflui
ty ; and the traders will penetrate further
into tlio country, and find new markets.—
We presume mules, at 100 per cent, profit
on the goods given in exchange, would not
be a bad speculation. They wilt endure
great fatigue, travel over a vast space of
ground in a short time, have a wonderful
knack ofcreco w cring from accidents, which
would kill horses, and will live forever.—

This wowan, it seems, was a seller ot trait

forth guarded, who appeared to be of some
consequence, and much exhausted, slnnd-
ferod him the little present mentioned with*

she neuer knew who he was till she recog
