T HE following Answer* were, amnnpst o
thers, delivered In a weekly Leettn e, du
ring the last winter, with a view to -emove
the doubts of 'he timoruua Christian, quicken
him in ihe way to 7,-in, to guaid againat pre
sumptuous hopes, and promote iheTiffe of reli
gion in tbe soul. That these important ends
might be answered, the auditory were desired
to supply ua with serious Casea of Conscience,
.wising from the difficulties they met with in
the course of their ezperienoe, and toconcetl
their names, that ah they might, with the
greater freedom, propose their respective
Sales, and that we, in »ur solution of theta,
might be kept from the least degree of fear or
restraint.
Through the repeated imrortunitiea of our
f-ienda, and from sctislactory evidences of use
fulneaa, we have been prevailed noon to com
mit to public view a select number or these
inswc-r.-.j though .omewhat contracted. Ami
we l ope, that those, into whose hands Ihet
may come, will read them wi ll Christian can
dour.—And may the Spirit of God, without
wh<»e peculiar blessing all attempts wili bo
ineffectual to answer any aaving purpose!,
make the-e a powerful o-eana of bringing them
nearer to Christ, and of malting them more
lively and active in his service ! If this happ)
end ia bin in the least answered, we altall re
joice, and give G d ill the glory, disregarding
all ihe little contempt that ruay be east upot
ua and our imperfect labours.
It must i-e acknowledged to he a very diffi.
cult and Ctt ical work to distribute to ever)
one then- proper portion, anti so to divide the
word of truth, as to give suitable encourage
ment to those to whom it belongs, and yelfi
leave the hypocrite or pr.a iir.ptur ut sinnet
no room to hope. It is equally difficult to at.
tempt to destroy the vain confidence of th<
sinner, without d aturbing the peace, and dis
outraging "the minda oi those who are the res'
followers et lesus. Who ia sufficient for these
things 1 We readily confi ssum insufficiehc.;
but yet hope, that tbe Lord has tnab.ed ua t-
be in some measure faithful, so far as our spiri
tual knowbdge extends i and may he enable
you who read, to deal faithfully with your own
mult that so neither our labuura, nor your per
uaal, may be to vain ! S. PIK”,
