pxkrMroTivs Firs.—A conflagration
more extensive in its rarages than auy which
had been previously, experienced in this city
for., aeveral years, commenced on Saturday
moroiqg, between' IS and 1 o’clock, and con
tinued burning until nearly 4 o’clock,'before
jtideatruetire progress could be arrested —
It commenced in e fruit shop, occupied by
Mr. Joo, Vignesu, near to the curoer of
Lsmboll-st, on tbe West side of King-st —
The wind, being fresh at N. E. the flames
were carried immediately over ri mass of
wooden buildings, exiending’ to South-Bay,
and the entire .square bounded on the East
by King-street on the South by South-Bay-
street, on the West by Legate-street, and on
tbe North by Larriboll-street, with tho excep
tion of four dwelling-houses, nearest to Le-
garo-strept, waa entirely destroyed. Besides
the buildings burnt in this squats, 3 dwelling
houses on the East side of Kiog-at. marly op
posite to where the fire originated, and the
large mansion of.Capt. F. Selins, on the
South side of South-Bay-atreer, (occupied by
Mr. Roger Heriot,) with audio of the adjoin
iug out-bulldingr, werri destroyed. Another
wooden dwelling house, belonging to Captain
9altus,'arid uearly'adjoining the one destroy
ed, was preferred, fay the unremitted exer
tions of the Hose Company. Several other
houses adjoining the scene of conflagration,
were repeatedly on fire, but'were finally aa-
ved by the exertions of (he citizens, tided by
the Hose, Engine and Aze Companies.
It ii not ascertained how the fire originated
—no one slept io.the front building, in which
it oomfaeuced, nor wat there any lira or cau
dle io it after half past 8 o’clock in the eve
ning } tba flames were discovered by a watch
man nbant half past It o’clock. The night
was severely cold, the wells in that neigh
borhood, which ana by no ineaos numerous,
were generally lew, and surin exhausted
and unfortunately, it wulow tide at the time
tbe fire wea raging—these. ciroomstances
added much to the-difficulty of arresting its
progress; aqd it it matter of oopgralulatioo

JVeie-Or/eane, Dec. 5.—Cotton.—The tern
purary demand noticed in cur last for the
northern and French markets, particularly'
for the latter, has been fully sustained this
week, making the sales during the last four. 1
teen days from 3500 to 3000 boles, principal
ly tbe growth of this state including some
from Mississippi. We have heard of some
sales in very clwice qualities, ranging as high
as 17 1-4 cents per Ib. owing to the great
scarcity of this, description, and the strong
desire to be the first with it in tlie French,
market; but although iiighcr prices have
beea obtained this week, for bettor qualities
than were in tlie market before, we caunot
admit that there b*s been any improvement
in price* effete. Oo the contrary, he have
every reasoofo believe, and find it to he the
prevailing opinion of all parties concerned,
that this article will decline muck io price
when purchasers.adventttre for the English
market, which is not expected soon, & whith
er more thao half of exports go direct. Itn
