TO SEAJUEN
Thousands of uhfortunato seamen are rendered use.
less to their country by tho ravages of a devouring dis
ease, to which they are moro subject than any other class
of men. The coseofan unfortunate sailor who cither
embarks in a diseased state, or finds himself so, on a
long voyage, must be truly -deplorable; and it may
not, perhaps, be improper to suggest the propriety of
always including the Catholjconin tho medicine chests
oftho Navy and Merchants’ service, it being a sovereign
remedy in tho disease alluded to.
TO SOUTHERN PLANTERS.
The Vegetable Catliolicon is peculiarly adapted to
those diseases which are prevalent among the coloured
population of tho south, in that discaso which is cal
led Yaws, it is a sure remedy ; a pinglo trial of it wm
convince planters of its superior efficacy to any remedy
never henaturo'in tho United States. They should

There is much truth in the aoeexed arti
cle, which wo copy from'the New York E-
veoing Post, of Tuesday. The old aphorism,
plus oecidit gala cjuam gladius,—hud refer
ence more to solids thau fluids. An Anti-
eating too much Society is as much needed as
much netted as Iho Autl-whiskey and juice
of the grave confederacy, or tiro Anti lacing
too tight and dressing too thin dombinalion of
parents and doctors.
“Mr. Editor.—I have road in your paper
of late two communications on tbe subject of
tho intemperate use of ardonl spirits and to
bacco, io its usual fotms. The philanthropic
writers aro embarked in a good cause, ana in
this age of reform happy phould I bo if these
tiroly abolished unavoce. To strike at tho
root of Iho evil, let tho good work bo com
menced in tho abodoB oftho rich and our
poorer classes would soon follow the exam
pie. But, Sir, there is a species of intemper
anco modified in its character, which ib on-
. tiroly overlooked, perhaps bn account of tho
slow operation of it deleterious effects; I mean
the immoderate, ond I may say the intoro-
perateuso of animal and vegetable food. A
roan may cat bis two pounds of rpsst beef, with
a duo proportioD of vegetables undpaatry.ac
companiud wilhabmtle of porter, followed
by a bottle or two of wine, and forsooth be .
cause ho has not taken a drop qf «(teht spir
its, ho rises from tbo table (but 1 not 'Without
considerable muscular exorljon). consolibg
himself that lie is not ranked among the class
ofiutomperato mco, thus quieting a guilty
conscience. Oh no ! the idea ia barbarous,
tbe fashionable word recognizes him as a ve
ry temperate sort of a man, only fopd of "good
eating.” Ho may indulgo perhaps in this
courBO a few years, not awnie that lie is dcs
troyiog tho tone of his stomach, which may
properly be considered tbe mill of tbo animal
system, that can grind hut a certain quanti
ty at a time, for tho purposes of digestion ;
the overplus is rejected os t be clipfl, and un
dergoes decomposition ift Ibo stomao^* Hence
.a variety of diseases ensue, particulnry attri-
butablo to to this cause nlonc, such as loss of
appetite, indigestion, acidity of tbn stomach,
headache, fever, and a thousand other ills—
There canuot bo any thing more destructive
to health than this system of ovor-feediog,
particularly noticed in high life. Nature has
wisely given lo this important organ called
tho stomach, great powers ns if aware of the
propensities of man lo indulge in luxuries of
oftho table, which nro too often destroyed
by distention and over action. It is alike Ibo
seat of disease and health as it is well or ill
used. Let those who have sioned, sin no
moro, hut gradually bring undor subjection
their morbid appetites, by returning to such
a course es nature points out, a plain opd
simple diet. Health would soon triumph o-
ver disease: Doctors would cease to multi
ply and cover tho earth, aud tbe word gor-
raandizor bo expunged from our vocabula-
riea. ^Bulimia.

your Committee regrets to say, a very great
proportion never will bu repaid, either prin
cipal or interest, and of course will be a dead
loss to tho fund, and interfern materially
witli ilia present utility of tho Legacy and
the prosper!ivo benefits founded upon its
gradual and certain increase.
A great number of bonds have been paid,
not by their original borrowers, but by their
sureties, and this leads your Commilteo to
the inevitable conclusion that, in such cases,
the Legacy lias not fulfilled the intentions of
the Testator.
In sumcca9cs it is believed that the money
borrowed has been slinrcd between tho bor
rower and the sureties. In odo case the in
dividual applying, hie sureties haring been
approved, was discovered to be unmarried,
and his application was of course refused.—

duced a regular certificate.ot his marriago,
which had taken place in tho meantimo.auil

. Look out for a Swindler.—Landed up
on our shores about n week since a little
Jnppef gentleman, quite of tho Cassius tnako
—of iho “lean and hungry look”—lost from
Wilmington N.C. announcing himself as Mr.
C. J. Baker, at present lumber merchant,
recently Sccrclarv of Legation (legation as ib
would seem by the sequel) at Mexico—look
ing to his impudence doubtless as to a never
failing mine of wealth. 'After a sojourn in
nur village of about a week Mr. Secretary
found it expediont to make a little oxnuroion
to Middleborougb Panda for his health, and
patronized his landlord’s valuable Ilorse and
Chaise for the purpose. In a day or two
however, foots came to light which rendered
it quite expedient to send a special despatch
after the ex diplomatist—as well for the re
covery of the horse nnd chaise, (to say noth
ing of money’s borrowed and landlord* char
ges for entertainment) ns’of a certain unli
quidated bill for passage money due to tbo
master of the good schooner Ambuscade.-—
The horse and chaieo were found in Boston,
hut the lumber merchant had left the citv in
too much baete to attend IO bills of board and
such other little matters tujnight have led
to serious negotiation. It is suppposed that
Baker wended his way.to New York.,
