October J5, 1847—Thu Grand Jury of the
County of Chatham, having recommended an
additional tax to aid in tho support of common
schools, the funds assigned by tlm Statu for
that purpose proving entirely inadequate loulfect
tlm objects intended to Im accomplished, tlm Jus
tices of the Inferior Court. desirous of comply
ing with this recommeiuiatiou, hut without resort
ing to an iucruaso of tlm present taxes, have de
cided to make nil appropriation for that object
from tlm present revenues of the county.
It is therefore ordered, That the interest de
rived from tlm sum of six thousand dollars, re
ceived for the old Jail and lots, and now vested in
Public Slocks, butind thereby appropriated nud
set apart, together with Rtieh further sum to lio
paid out of the County treasury, us shall makeup
tlio amount office, hundred dollars annually, Im
paid to tlio Commissioners of Common Schools,
to ho impropriated by them.with the concurrence
of the Justices of tho Inferior Court, to tho sev
eral District schools, in such proportions ns shall
Im deemed most Imunficinl: Provided, neverthe
less, that the iiihnhitauts of each district shall
cmiHo one or more convenient and proper school
houses to Ijo built ill each district, and approved
of by said Commissioners, otherwise the money
apportioned to such district shall he withhold.
Ordered further, That Robert A. Lewis he,
and Imis hereby appointed one of tlm Commis
sioners in plueo of N. J. Buyurd removed from
the county.
It is required that these orders he entered upon
thu minutes of the Inferior Court and Im publish
ed in both the city gazettes for one mouth, daily,
and by a {proper notification from the Cummis-
siotiers in relation to tlm building of school
houses.
