such ns night sweats, &c. Ac.
Tho native Febrifuge is offered. The proprie
tor is aware tiiuttiio common objections to all new
preparations will bo urged against tiiis. To obviate
all such objections, lie has simply to stato that it is
prepared according to the receipt of an eminent
pliysican, who used it with perfect success
through a long practice, in perhaps the most sick-
iy region of our country, viz: the Mississippi val
ley •' Again from the exalted estimation.in which
Quinine is held, not only by the people, but by
the most skillful physician*, it will nnpeursiipora-
rogatory to offer any now article. But tlio Native
Febrifuge possesses nil the power and certainty
of Quinine in controlling Fever without affecting
tho head, aud may lie satuly used therefor, where
Quinine is inadmissible. It is not tho purpose of
tho proprietor however sanctioned hy custom on
such occasions, to attempt a display of medical
knowledge by adopting some ono of the contra
dictory theories afloat, witli regard to tlio charac
ter und causes of Fever.
Believing with tho learned Gregory that though
there has heon so much written concerning Fever
there is no one subject in tlio wholueirclcofmedi-
cal science which still involves so many disputed
points. Letting all theories puss, wo Htuud by
facts. The first of which is that tho Native Fe

Savannah, 12th May, 18-17.
Mr. Jus. A. La Koclio having requested mo to

tako pleasure in stating tiiut it wus used bcnolici-
idly in the Fevers of the valley oftlio Mississippi
and Arkansas, in all cases iu which Quinine is us

Fairbanks Phil form Scales.—It i* not often that
wo nro induced to laud an nrticlo of trade, nnd
wo never do unless perfectly satisfied tliut we nro
commending something that is usofttl. We can
not consent to gratify the cupidity or an indivi-
dual, at the risk of imposing tho confidence of
thousands of our renders who rely upon the hon-
csty of our statements, if not in tfio infulibility of
our jiulmcnt. That great improvements have
been made within a few years, tn tho instruments
or weighing merchandise, j* a fact familiar to busi-
nem man. 1 ho antiauo chinny and inaccurate
methods of weighing, liavo given way to tho in
vention of Americau mechanical skill, and the ut-
niost precision has been attained. A variety of
l latterm Balances are manufactured and used,
which cannot bo relied on for ony considerable
degree ol accuracy: so that they necessarily in-
volvo one party in pecuniary loss. It therefore
“fiords us pleasure to refer to the Platform Scales
of.tir. Fairbank, which have boon extensively
used in all parts of tlio United States for soverul
years, and given, as*far as our kuuwledgcd ex
tends, very general satisfaction. Wo purchased
one of those scales throe years since, and have us
ed them constantly for weighing paper, &e. and
for accuracy and durability, we nro quite sure,
they have not, and perhaps cunnot. bo surpassed.
The plan of construction is philosophical and
simple. The employment of two levers, with o
single beam, is certainly the most practicable, In
a compound platform balance. Any increase of
tho uumbqr of levers or un additional beam, ren
ders tho instrument more complicated, less precise
iu its operation und more liable to derangement.
Theso scales are used by many of tho leading

to their nuperior excellence has been freely tic-

Peace I Peace I nnd Liberty!!
TO TIIE AFFLICTED.
By M. S. Thomson, M. D., Macon, Gkoroia.

Among tiie nations spreads a dread dismay.
When conquering legions, maddened boldly storm
Tho citouol nna kill and wound and slay.
When no tiling is heard but tlio din and strife,
And groans and orios of helpless ebbing lifo,
Come gontlo Peace, step forth, *tu time to savo

Whon nothing is heard but tlio wail of woo,
Of sttiToreni tossing them to and fro,
Como good Samaritan, tlio balm apply,
And the lov’d weary ono wont faint or die.

Wlint though ho may bu bound in strongest chains,
And uothiug has but what his lord ordains,
Yet Liberty stops forth und suls him freo.
And tyrantoavitli thoir voturius turn and lice.
What though diseases of whatever nnnio,
Retain their hold on Impious men for years,
What though a hundred mineral sons of fume
Havo done their best tn stop their wild careers,
What though tho nostrums ortho quack, tlio pill,
Tho syrup, balsam, or cold water fail,
Yet Thomson's simplo mean.* may set them freo.
To raise the gladd’ning shout of Liborty!
It is not tho purpose of tho undersigned to en

HERRING'S RESTORATIVE

The extraordinary benefit received by mo from
tho use of your ••Restorative Cordial,” impels iqo
to make the following statement, not only as nu
net of duty iu regard of suffering humanity, but
as one gf justice towards you, its proprietor.
For ten years I was most seriously afflicted
with Dispepsin, and its various complications, so
much so, indeed, that I was often unfitted for
business one or two days in tho week. I suffered
mostly from disordered digestion and a painful
affection of the bowels, connected with tlio most
troublesome and obstinate costivoness, tiie parti
culars of which it would be out of place here to
specify. Suffice it to say, that the first bottlo of
your Restorative Cordial, token some six months
ago, 'afforded me immediate relief; and that hav
ing continued it from timo to time, I am now
happy to add that tho euro has been complete and
permanent. Believing that many may be simi
larly afflicted with the various forms or Dyspep
sia. I am induced to moko this public acknow
ledgment for the general good.
Respectfully, yours, &c. Wm. Hooker.
