J- October 15, 1847—The Grand Jury of the
County of Chatham, having rocommoudcd an
additional tax to aid in tlio support of common
schools, tlio funds assigned ny tho State for
that purpose proving entirely inadequate to effect
tho objects intended to be accomplished, tlio Jus
tices of tho Inferior Court, desirous of comply
ing with this recommendation, but without resort
ing to ail increaso of tho present taxes, have de
cided to make on appropriation for that object
from the present revenues of the county.
It is therefbre ordered, .That tlio interest de
rived from tlio sum of six. thousand dollars, re
ceived for the old Jail mid lots",’und now vested in
Public Stocks, he and is hereby appropriated and
set apart, togotlier with such further sum to ho
paid out of tho County treasury, ns shall makeup
the amount of Jlec hundred dollars annually, bu
paid to the Commissioners of Common Schools,
to bo appropriated by them with tho concurrence
of the Justice* of the Inferior Court, to tlio sev
eral District schools, in such proportions as shall
be deemed most beneficial: Provided, neverthe
less, that the inhabitants of each district shall
cause one or more conveniont and proper school
houses to bo built in each district, nud approved
of by said Commissioners, otherwise tlio money
apportioned to such district shall bo withheld.
Ordered further, That Rohort A. Lewis bo,
and lie is hereby uppointed ono of the Commis
sioners in place of N. J. Bayard removed from
the county.
It is required that those orders ho entered upon
tho minutes of tho Inferior Court and he publish,
ud in both the city gazettes for ono month, daily,
und by a {proper notification from tho Couunis-
Hinners in relation to tlio building of school
houses. .
