i October 15, 1847—-The Grand Jury of tho
Comity of Chatham, having recommended an
additional tax to aid in tho support of common
schools, the funds unsigned liy tho Statu for
that purpose proving entirely inadequate to cficct
the objects intended to bo accomplished, tho Jus
tices of tho Inferior Court, desirous of comply
ing with this recommendation,hut without resort
ing to un iucrouso of tho present taxes, have de
cided to maku an appropriation for that object
from the present revenues of the county.
It is therefore ordered, That tho interest de
rived from the suui of six thoutuvud dollars, re
ceived for the old Jail and lots, and now vested in
Public Stofcks, he and is hereby appropriated and
set apart, timolher with such limner sum to he
paid out of the County treasury, us shall make up
the amount office hundred dollars annually, be
paid to the Commissioners of Common Schools,
to bo appropriated by them with tho concurrence
of the Justices of the Inferior Court, to the sev
eral District schools, in such proportions us shall
bo deemed most hetiulieial: Frovidod, neverthe
less, that thu inhabitants of ouch district shall
cause one or more convenient and proper school
houses to he Imilt in each district, and approved
of by said Commissioners, otherwise the money
apportioned to such district shall bo withheld.
Ordered further, That Robert A. Lewis bo,
and he is hereby appointed one of tho Commis
sioners iu place ol’ N. J. Bayard removed from
the comity.
It is required that these orders be entered upon
tho minutes of tho Inferior Court and ho publish
ed in both tho city gazettes for one mouth, daily,
and by a (proper notification from tho Commis
sioners iu relation to thu building of school
houses.
