X October 15, 1847—Tho Grand Jury of the
County of Chatham, having recommended an
additional tax to aid in the support of common
schools, tlio funds assigned by thu Statu for
that purpose proving entirely inadequate to eflect
tho objects intended to hu accomplished, thu Jus
tices of the Inferior Court, desirous of comply
ing with this recommendation, but without resort
ing to an increase of tlio present taxes, have de
cided to make ait appropriation for that object
from the present revenues of the county.
It is therefore ordered, That the interest de
rived from tlio sum of six thousand dollars, re
ceived Ibr the old Jail and lots, and now Vested in
Puhlf: Stocks, be mid is hereby appropriated and
set apart, together with such further hiiiii to he
paid out of tlio County treasury, as shall makeup
the amount of fire hundred dollars iiiimmlly, he
paid to the Commissioners of Common Schools,
to he nmiropriuted by them with llm cotleurre
of the Justices of tin: Inferior Court, to tlio t
oral District schools, in Hindi proportions as shall
be deemed most beneficial: Provided, neverthe
less, that the inhabitants of each district shall
cause one or more convenient and proper school
houses to im built ill each district, and approved
of by said Commissioners, otherwise the money
apportioned to such district shall Im withheld.
Ordered further, That Robert A. Lewis he,
and lie is hereby appointed one of the Commis
sioners iu place of N. J. Bayard removed from
the county.
It is required that these ardors be mitered upon
thu minutes ol’ tho inferior Court and he mihlish-
ed iu both tho city gazettes for one month, daily,
and by a {proper notification from the Commis
sioners in relation to tho building of school
houses.
