now published at lloston, Tiad Hot'App^arefl,—
The British periodical publications w«rc objects'
of giT-at interest and curiosity,' and from them
was ruslly formed a magUzine, both usefd nod
entertaining, .
The title was changed and original malterin- ■>
trochiced when Mr. Washington rrvingliecame
the editor, mid the earliest volumes ol the “M-
alccu'c Magazine” Were enriched with some <»f
the finest productions of that elegant and justly
favorite writer. From that time to the .present, •
every succeeding volume has contained much
original composition upon sucjccts of national
literature, biography and history, varying in
ouantity, according to the occasions of its pro
duction, and accompanied with u selection, more
choice and Hpurineyfroiu a much increased num
ber of foreign publications.
Considerable diversity of opinion has prevail
ed among the advisers of the successive Editors
as to the due proportion of original and seluctcd
matter, some urging the propriety ofYewlcrijjg'
the Magazine purely original, and others rec-
muinending the total exclusion of all but selec
tions. The course pursued has been a compro
mise between these two opinions.
A periodical Beview, wholly original truly
American, conducted with ability, and exten
sively patronized, is indubitably a desideratum in
our country. The “North American Review,”
published qhartcrly at Boston, is the oiily work
which approaches this character. Anil until
our reading public arc more disposed than at
present tu encourage such an enterprize, anoth
er cannot he attempted with any hope of sijch
success as would produce either honor c-r profit
o the projectors.
The present Editor of the Analcctic Magazine
is, however, desirous to fender it as nearly an
original Journal as public patronage will permit, .
and \yill; if circumstuiufts allow, gradually ex
clude all foreign aid from its pages.
The length of the subscription list must, how-
ever, determine the quantity of original coilnio-
sit ion that cun he paid for, and it isolniom* that
to depend on (lie ynsual contributions of gcntle-
,v»r-»r wm/ » -mh.u^m.1 o*.,,
lone, or from friendship to the Editor, would be
a very insecure dependence; although the Edi
tor gratefully acknowledges the many valuuble
communications receiver, tin* year, from such
sources. Subscribers may however he assured
that no worthless original matter shall be insert
ed, mere4 because it is original, and no article
shall ever be inserted as original which is not
truly so, as is too often done in some cote’mpo-
rary Journal?. Since therefore original compo
sition cunnot be hoped tor at once, of a satisfac
tory quality, and in quantity sufficient to fill all
the pages of the Magazine, no promise can ut
present he made further than that as much shall
be procured us the patronage of the Journal
will allow.
1 he selected matter, is is presumed, hnwev-
L-r, will be found of no little interest and value,
The British journals have lately exhibited a ve
ry silly animosity tou-M-ds our institutions, but
they still contain many very ingenious disquisi
tions, ami much curious information,'Which must
be interesting anil useful to the American pub
lic. “Fas cat ft ah hoste duceri,” however much
we may blame their prejudices,or contemn tbeif
railings, we stiff may ii/.U onr profit in makeiug
their knowledge and the result of their indi.stiy
andresarch our\own. The Quarterly and Ed
inburgh Reviews arc republished and extensive
ly circulated in the U. States, perhaps therefore,
selections from them may not be generally ad
visable; lest the public should he tired by repe
tition. And oi) the other hand, tho “I /idles*
Monthly Museum,” “I.a Belle Jlstemblor,” and
some otlu-r works of the* same light character
arc carefully eviscerated for that ente rtaining
miscellany the , “Athenaeum.” But there are
many others, particularly the British Review,
British Critic, New Monthly Magazine, Klectic
Review; Pamphleteer, European Magazine, A-
siatic Journal, Anti jacobin, Black woou’s Edin
burgh Magazine, Constable’s Edinburgh Maga
zine, Journal of Science and the Arts, &c, &e.
supplying excellent and abundant matter for
selection and abstract. And besides all these,
the French Journals which are. not at all intro-
ductftl to our reading public, either by republi-
catioii or extracts, form a much richer wine of
uiftgmation. The new work entitled “Bcvue
Encyclopedist*” is full of excellent writing on
politics and liteiature. The “Joia-ual des Sn-
vans,” “Minervc Frnncaisd,” ami “Journal Lite-
raire,” are also admirable in the exhibition of
talent and learning. Translations from these ici/l
form u part »f every future number. And the
German periodical works will be made use of in
the same manner, though the difficulty of pro
curing a regular supply forbids any precise en
gagement as to the frequency of translations
from them.
Every number will contain a monthly list of
new publications, domestic and foreign, and, ua
far as can be obtainecj, an epitome of the pro-
ceedingsef scientific and literary institutions, at
honie and abroad.
The Magazine will be published in the same
stv le, with the same embellishments, and on the
*ame conditions as heretofore, by James Max-
* ell, b. E. corner of Fourth and Walnut streets,
d hiladelphia.
