To the Honorable the JStmjnr hud Council of ths
City of Savannah.
Duties more imperative than usual now be
long to every individual, directly or indirectly
connected with our ill-fated city, u neglect to
discharge any of them is reprehensible ural
highly censurable. Each one should take the
part in aiding to remote the evils of a wide*
Spread calamity, for whiclij|ie is best fitted.—
Under this impression, and feeling like hun
dreds of others, the pressure of a general disas
ter which lias brought our city to a heap of rtu
ins; 1 offer my services as an individual to visit
almost every state in the Union, and-most or all
of the principal cities, with minor and inferior
towns and villugys, to collect contributions in
money, and ull kind of building materials, and
all other articles which may in some measure
contribute to tlje relief of our distressed citizens.
All 1 ask is the sunetdn of Council, or their
'authority to act, merely defraying my travelling
expenses: (my ow n veil cle I will furnish ) leav
ing it to myself to add such credentials here,
und at other cities, which will more certainly
secure success in the. undertaking, and also to
myself to make such appeals or addresses w here
l may go, us may seem most judicious.
By a proper and timt lv appeal, individually,
to the charitable of our sister states and cities,
I uni very confident inu< h may he effected, and
large contributions obtained.
Respectfully yours, <^c.
