MONDAY MORNING, .IkIthv 24.
roil THK OKOROUir.
It has been determined to remove the Mnrket»
where shall it be placed ?—This is an important
question, not to be rashly decided, and afterward*
repented of. The writer of tlds is disinterested^
and begs leave to suggest to hits fellow-citizens,
whether any place is so suitable as Bay-street.
Let the Market be a neat building, extending,
say 1,00 feet on each side of the Exchange. It
will add to the beauty of the town, will be cen
tral, and, convenient. It will constantly be un
der the eye of the community, and will be clea
ner of course than the old market, or one still
more remote, as contemplated. A Kish Market
may be established below the Exchange, where
fresh water fish can be preserved alive in care,
and all supplies by water conveyed to market
with greater facility and abundance. Another,
and not a trifling advantage, will be the shelter
afforded by a well paved building of this kind
to the mercantile purt of the community in wet
weather. A CITIZEN.
Thomas E. Lloyd, EsnV* has been elected a
Justice of the Inferior Court for the county of
Cluthum.
• In the Kentucky Legislature Mr. D'akikt, has
Obtained leave to bring in a bill to declare void
all sales under executions in favor of the Presi
dent, Directin'* and Company of the United State*
Dank, and to rtvike it a penitentiary offence to
purchase at such sales.
The Debate on the Missouri question lias at
length commenced in the Senate of the United
States. The discussion has been brought on in
cidentally to the bill for the admission of Maine
into the Union, it having been proposed, by way
of amendment, to incorporate in the same bill a
provision for the admission of Missouri into the
Union, divested of the condition by which it has
been proposed to exclude Slavery from the state
to be erected in that territory. This question
absorbs so much attention, that, until it is defi
nitively settled, it may almost be said, no other
business will be done in Congress. It was well
observed on this head yesterday, bv Mr. Macon,
that the appearance of the. Senate Chamber at
tested the importance of the question actually
depending. Never were the galleries and lob
bies more crowded. The Debate will of course
be reported.—•Mat. Int. 14/4 inst.
Forgery.—A successful attempt at fbrgerv w* 3
practised in this city within a few days. A check
for upwards of 2300 dollars, drawn in the name
of a respectable merchant, was presented ut the
Planter* and Mechanics Bank, by a genteelly
dressed stranger, and paid by the Teller, with
out suspicion, which turns out to be a forgery.
The person who presented it is unknown.—

place, (say about 800,) are to march immediate
ly, as is reported, for New-Orlcuns, under the
command of Captain Bkr, of the Army. The
U. S. schooner Revenge, M‘01unie, has arrived
here in 4 days from Charleston.”

LATE FROM VALPARAISO.
The ship Governor Hawkins, Carr, (late Cof
fin) from Valparaiso, hound to Philadelphia, ar
rived in Hampton Hoads, 10th inst.—By a pas
senger who reached here yesterday evening,
via Annapolis, information is- received that the
embargo at Valparaiso was raised 6lh Septem
ber, and the Chilian fleet under Lord Cochrane,
sailed 12th September, with a determination to
destroy the Spafiish fleet at Lima, being sup
plied with a large quantity of Congreve Pock
ets, &c. &c. The Governor Hawkins left Val
paraiso 9th October.—Balt, paper.
The packet ship James Monroe, Rogers, bound
to Liverpool, went to sea yesterday. The wind
being ahead, she was towed down by the steam
boat Nautilus. The proprietors of this line of
packets eag?r!y embrace every mode to pre
serve, unbroken, punctuality as to the time of
their departure; and the public duly appreciate
the utility of the establishment.
J\T. V. Gazette, 11/4 inst,
We learn from Jamaica papers that Captain
Chiltv and crew, of the brig Libertudor, consist
ing of a motley group of whites, Indians, mu-
lattoes, samboes and blacks, were-brought be
fore the magistrates of Kingston, on the 2dth
of ' ovember, interrogated, and sent to jail.—
By an order from the Governor, subsequently,
they have all been liberated and ordered off
the Island, except Cbitty, and one of his officers,
John Graham, who are to be tried for acts of
piracy on the high seas.—.Y. F. Daily Adv.
The latest intelligence from Commodore Ar-

teers, waiting the arrival of two brigs from New-
Orlcuns, when it is said he is to attack the Spa
nish ports near the Bay of Honduras. His fleet
consists of the brigs Congress, 16 guns; Mars,
14; Bellona, 8; schooners Creole, 3; Isabella, 4
Empress, 2; Le Guerriere, 6; and felucca Diana,
2. He was engaged in fitting the brig Ettribu-
no, to be added to the squadron.—[Ibid.
Letters from Porto-Rello, dated in November,
give a terrible account of the situation of the
E. glish prisoners whom M‘Gregor deserted.—
They are compelled to labor hard, from sunrise
to sunset, and aie fed with miserable food. In
consequence of their treatment they were p r-
isling daily. Of the original number but 55
oxb alive, one half of whom are in the hospital.
