Stat 0 Prison at xYtiw-Vork.—A report
has been mnde to the legislature, by ejnn-
missionora appointed at the last session
to enquire into the subject, recommending
that provision be nV.ule for removing the
state prison from its present site to the
marble quarries near Kingsb ridge; that a
tract of 40 acres of said quarries be pur
chased, and that the prisoners be employ

wall, and in constructing the requisite
buildings within the encosurc; and that

been quite unsuccessful. No intelligence what
ever could he got of a satisfactory nature. We
have reason to believe that llie mail has been
totally destroyed.—Hepublicnn.

Remarkable Spring.— We have hither
to suit! nothing about an oil spring which
was discovered, about three years ago, on
Duck Creek, Morgan county, while bor
ing for salt water. This spring yields an
inexhaustible, supply of pure oil.—It is a
tolerable substitute for fish oil; and is
considerably used in currying leather.—
It quite answers the purposes of sperma
ceti oil for lamps; it is used in various
(kinds of medicines. We are not inform
ed whether it can be used in paints. Hut
there is no doubt that it is a discovery of
invaluable importance. We should like
to hear some chemical disquisition of its
properties from some gentlemen in the
neighborhood. Said oil is sold at the low
price of 50 cents per gallon, and for less
by the barrel, This spring may have been
public I v described; but if »u, probably
some others may have been as forgetful as
ourselves about it, and will be glad to
hear of any acquisition to our internal
wealth. —
The Act which has passed the parliament of
England, for the suppression of libellous pub-
11 utions, takes in at a sweep all small papers,
whether pamphlets, weekly journals, trial re-
f iorts, or o. any description which will not uf-
brd a doty of :il,out 7 cents on each. There
are three ways in which it is to operate:—in the
first place every printer must give security to
the amount of 300/. sterling for the purity of
the matter he shall print; then tho publisher or
'printer must pay the stamp duty of 44. English,
on each copy; and for the second offeree he is
to suffer banishment. Sir V. De Civspigncz
gravely observed upon the bill, just as it was
about to be passed, that if the noble Lord Cas
tlereagh should liuppen to be cut of}.' by the
bunds of the law, tiie world would be deprived
by the bill of his Lordship's Dying Speech ami
Confession.—Dhi lad. Union.

British Pensions.— It is calculated, that
should all the pensions and sinecures,

“The last acco'iiitv received here from Afar

there from England and Ireland, having brought
out about 2tWu troops, who are encamped three
miles from the town; they are a fine healthv
looking set, and are said to be well disciplined,
Several officers of rank have accompanied-them
They were to proceed to join the expedition to

were making. Admiral Hrion had lost his Hag

Pile Patriot brig Don Alonzo was carried down
with her, and such is the depth of water and
situation of the place, that it was feared it would

Several prizes bad been sent in, Imt none of
great value. Six Patriot privateers were refit
ting, and to sad soon on some expedition. Sir
Gregor M‘Greg >r had not arrived, but was dail
expected from Cape llenrv. Produce was
scarce at Marg.iritta, and there was very little
trade to the Island.
Markets at Si. Thomas had in the extreme-
Flour, dull at Sugars are, and will be scarce
throughout the Islands, the recent hurricanes
having destroyed the cane, more or less on all
the estates; what little is in market is held at
and tlmt but of inferior quality. Molassc
has got up to 40 cts. per gallon. The article of
Lumb r which 1ms flown in here in great quan
tities, owing t<» f.lie allaying, prices held out im
mediately after the hurricane, has, literally
speaking, completely lumbered us up, so that
we hope our eastern brethren will endeavor tp
fiiid another market for some time to conic.-
The winter, so far, must have been with you
pretty severe, if we may judge of the many
vessels which have put iu here and the adjacent
Islands, having been blown off the Aim-rican
eeast. The climate is as usual, verv pleasant
for the season, and although the place is not
sickly, yet there has been several deaths by fe
ver; the month of .Military, however, has been
known to be more fatal than August and Sep
tember, which is probably owing to the preva
lence of north winds. Our latest advices'from
Porto-Uico are four dins since; the markets
there for flour were rather brisker than here,
hut the demand very limited--Sugar Was more
plenty, and the new crop of Coffee promised to
be considerable.
At St. Harts, flour is $7 to 8, a considerable
stock on hand; sugar so scarce that many ves
sels would be compelled to leave the -ptacc
without procuring it. Molasses also scarce at
38 <*cnts per gallon. Lumber is there iq great
plenty, and no sale.
At St. Croix ’he crop of sugar has been very
short, and not more than would supply the re-
golar^traders. The llritish Windward Islands,
Antigua, St. Kitts, Montserat, Nevis, he. av
open for 12 months from November last, and
will, no doubt, monopolize considerable of the
trade from the V>. S. The scarcity of sugars
