*** At a meeting of the Joint
Committee for distribution of monies collected
for the relief of the distressed sufferer* by the
late fire, Savannah, February 24th, 1B20.
3'lie Board took into consideration the list
of Applications for relief, and the amount of
losses, whereupon it waa resolved, that the fol-
lowing claims be rejected, as not falling within
the province of the charitable fund entrusted to
this Board, to he distributed amongst the dis
tressed sufferers by (ho late fire.
[JJtt e itered oh the Minute*.]
Reaolved, That the said rejected list be en
tered on the Minutes for the information of all
concerned, with IcavqAo either of the claim
ants, to make explanations as to his or her cir
cumstances and to adduce proof thereon, to
enable tliis Committee to reconsider the rejec
tion now made, if thia he ap|>licd for, on or be
fore the 2d day of March next,
Ex'O avt from the Minute*.
AUGUSTUS DOt'SSET, Sec*ry.
M.my of the applications before the Joint
Committee have beep rejected for an entire
want of evidence and formality, Which might
have been avoided by proper attention to the
rule heretofore recommended: if tliis be wil
fully neglected, it is hut natural to suppose that
the person applying is indifferent about relief,
and not an object ot the fund at the distribution
of this Board. It is therefore, again, and for the
Inst time recmnmeiuled, that incapacity to bear
the loss, ami the state and circumstances of the
person applying, (where not knfewn to some 6f
the members) must appear, by actual affidavit
or collateral evidence: otherwise, persons ma>
ultimately complain of the amount allotted,
which would have been different, hail proper
and common precaution been taken. Many ap
plicants, no doubt, fully entitled to the atten
tion of the Board, are at rangers totlient, and
limit attend to’* their own lint treat, and not im
pose upon the members, t ie necessity of decid
ing unsatisfactorily to XlfetnscWkS, or seeking
for information from others, for tile justification
of their voles.
By order of thf Hoard,
AUGUSTUS
