its fullest force the .sentiment of gratitude
to the man who had flrst taught his coun

only because he had supposed that the

Threadful Calamity'—If becomes our
duty, however painful the task, to give an
account of a melancholy circumstance
which lately occurred in this county. On
the 23th ult. the house or Mr. Austin Kel
logg, in Smithfield, was destroyed by fire,
and in it his wife and only child about 5
weeks old. The circumstances as stat
ed to ns are briefly these; Mrs. Kellogg,

flax near the hearth, when a roal from the
chimney communicated fire to the flax, a
large n’lmtitv "fwlich was ill the room,

We hear by a private letter from Did-.
tin, that, as two young officers, a Unpt.
and a Lieut, were drinkiuu a glass in a
Tavern, a dispute arising about the supe
riority of their mistresses, involved them
in a quarrel, which, by the interposition
of a gentleman then present, ‘was at the
time allayed; but, next morning, the
Captain sent the Lieutenant a Challenge,
who, instead of accepting it, returned
the following answer:
••SIR—I reckon it my peculiar,happi
ness, that I can produce the oflirers and
soldiers, who witnessed my behavior at
F , ns evidences of my courage. You
limy endeavor, if you please, to propogate
niy refusing your challenge and brand me
cowardice; But, I am fully convinced,
that nobody will believe me guilty, and
every body will see that you are malicious
The cause in which we quarrelled, was a
trifle—the blood of a soldier should be re
served fur a nobler purpose. Love is
blind—resentment mean—and taste ca
pricious; nod it ought tu be considered,
that murder; though patented by a lulse
show of honor, is murder still, and calls
for vengeance!”

Singular Exploit.— A singular conflic-

. .taken place a few days since, in Jefferson
county. Mr.
«* u newspaper in Watertown, went out to
examine some traps which had been set
for wolves, and found a panther caught in
one of them. He return.cd, and procured
a friend tn accompany him, for the pur
pose of bringing in the animal alive. W hen
they arrived at the trap, they found that
‘ the panther had disengaged itslf and es
caped. They soon discovered it nt no
great distance. Mr. Rich advanced to
wards it, and his companion retired and
left him. Mr. R. fired and shot the pan
ther through the head. Having discover
ed what he supposed to be another, he in
stantly loaded .and fired again, hut found he
hud mistaken his object. Immediately,
however, he preceived a larger one advanc
ing towards him, which sprang nt him
fiercely, with is mouth open, before he
could.load his piece. He lluust iiis hand
into to the mouth of the panther, & caught
hold of its tongue. The panther scratch

was completely filled with flame and the
roof in several placea on fire. Their first
object, of course was to save the unfortu
nate woniao and her child, and several
times called upon her name in hopes that
she would appear at one of the windows,
but called to no effect she was discovered
with her child lying near a window of the
room joining the one in which the fire com
menced, from which she had probably at
tempted to escape. The window was im
mediately broken, hut from the fury of
the flames some time elapsed before the
bodies could be taken from the house, in
thy mean time snow was thrown on them
to prevent them from consuming. The
bodies were ot lenglb taken from the ru
ins: -The child was dead, but not much
disfigured. The limbs, and the fleshy
part of the head ot the woman were con
sumed offering a shocking spectacle to the
neighbaors, win ha l by this lime arrived to
witness the dreadful scene—What then,
Hen quantum mutatus ah ilia!
From all accounts it scums clear that the all
ocates of restrict iofi in the Senate have been
guilty of gross indiscretion to say the least, in
the sentiments expressed by them during the
Missouri debate, and it is with pain that we per
ceive Mr. King one of our oldest statesmen,
putting himself at the head of a band ol enthu
siasts, and hurling the torch of sedition into the
Temple which he assisted to construct. IVe
had fondly hoped, from his course during the
late war, and the recent, combination of parties
for his election, that lie was one of those disin
terested,- and honest men. who are content to
nerve theircountiv in u subo’dinatc tho*honor
able station; placing their glory more in deserv
ing, than acquiring the empty distinctions of
power. Hut it seems we have mistaken him.—
There is a faint possibility that his remarks have
been misrepresented, and candor obliges us to
say, that Ids speech when seen entire may justi
fy a less odious construction than that which it
has received. Vet (so uniform is the. testimony)
we can scarcely doubt that he has betrayed his
high trust, and c<) npromit -d his reputation
to gratify a elfish policy, o. the views of a dis
contented party.
We cannot perceive however that the deci-
sion of this question is pregnant with such alarm
ing consequences to the friends of the Union.
We have too much confidence in the good sense
of the pepplc in ever} - , part of the country, to
believe for a moment that they will continue to
he misled by a few ambitious and disappointed
politicians. There is much greater cause for
apprehension in the familiarity with which we
begin to discuss at this early period of our na
tional existence, the horrible project of a divi
sion of the States.
What do these people propose by such intem
perate conduct? What does Mr. King mean who
assisted to form our constitution, in which the
existence of that which lie now denounces, is
solemnly recognized?—If it is an evil, it is reme
diless, it has grown up with us, and shame upon
those men who under the mask of humanity seek
at this day to create disturbance in that quarter,
No! it is not humanity, it is not philanthropy
which impels them. But us was observed by
an honest and firm friend to his country, Mr.
Holmes, it is a political hobby with its head
turned towards the the Presidential chair.
Mounted upon this hobby, you may see Clinto-
niunsund anti-Clintonians, Hartford Couvcntion-
isls, and Essex junto-men, all switching, and
spurring and groaning in the cause of injured
humanity! The reasonable people of the north
will it is to be hoped soon penetrate this shallow
tr ck of a forlorn party, and leave the hobby and
his riders to tiie derision and contempt which
they deserve. With a few alterations such as
will readily suggest themselves to every mind,
how well does the warning of the judicious Tro
jan to his countrymen apply to our own case.
