Originated in the French and was copied into the British
journals, and in some measure indicates the feelings enter-
ta’ncdin the former, even nt this distant day, in relation
to tho personage whose name heads this article. The
sentence however, which wo have quoted is not' founded
ill fiict. lly a gentleman acquainted with the circumstan
ces, wo arc informed, that Sir Hudson Lowe returned
from India in 1628, where had been second in command,
in the important island of Ceylon. During the lust sum
mer, (1829,) he received on appointment aa comman
dant of the forces in the same Island, to succeed Sir J.
Dames, as Governor General, as soon ns his period of
service should expire. At the time of his death ho won

ward him, as a faithful officer.
The Grand Jurors of Richmond county follow in the
wake of that of Hancock, in presenting the conduct of
printers in employing negroes in newspaper establish-
merits, as an evil. Be it known to all Grand and Petit
Jurors, suitors and witnesses, that wo employ two sa
ble professors of the black ait, which wo hope will not
glider us liable to the suspicion of dealing with tho
^ersonage supposed to patronise, nnd whose name has
been ever united to, the honored founder of our pro
fession, the renowned Dr. Fauslus, Wo aro sure that
as far as their knowledge of types is nn evil, It is a very
harmless one—for neither of them (and one has been in
the offico for twelve years) can distinguish D from a
Bull’s foot, and would as soon work the paper upside
down, or wrong side out, as in tho usual mode, if supine*
c l before them. Some of the blunders w hich occur nt
tho press, to which their operations are limited, are a
.Vtisfuctory proof of their utter guiltlessness of any
knowledge of letters. In Augusta them arc Mack com.
pushers ; but we have never yet introduced n black de

with these of an uppasite color to try onr philosophy.

which to restore his countrymen under their ancient

In .Senate yesterday, tho Joint Committee on Banks
made the following lleports, which were adopted:
“The situation of the Planters* Hank js fully shewn
from its statement.
“The soundness of the currency of the State depends
upon the prudent and judicious manageme nt oflhu hank
ing institutions by thr.su to whom they aro entrusted,
and the value nttiiched by tho public to tho paper
bills issued from them, w a criterion which fully tests
that soundness. Whenever u paper dollar is considered
by the bolder ns one of silver, or equal to so much ol
the previous metal, no fear of depreciation exists, and
none need he apprehended ; and a preforenec is given
t-» this medium front the conviction that a demand for
gold or silver w ill be immediately ccmplii d with and the
hill redefined, Tho Planters Bank or Georgia, like
••tti. i mstitutinis of the Stute, has had much to eontcnd
ag.’i'iist, from the tluciuaiions in commerce, its frequent
reverses and the emlinrrossmcntB in which those who
have been largely engaged in commercial pursuits have
been involved. Debtors frequently, amidst difficulties
which press with severity and rigor upon them, aro ip-
fb|(-i:u.:d by tho feeling that a monied corporation can
lilt re oi.sdy sustain a loss, and with less injury, than
other creditors, und a s..i-rifno of their interests is the
general result of this foeluig. Under these cimmwtnn-
‘•'•8 »t is not n subject of n proor tliut at periods no divi

their credit should bo sustained, and their solvency un.
suspected. Your Committee are of upinioii that the
Planters’ Bank has hem managed upon tho soundest
principles of good policy nnd such as to secure to it con
fidence and reliance upon its competency to auswer any
demands which may bo itmdc upon it,
“Tho condit ion of tho Stato Batik,ns derived from the
report of tlift presiding officer, is satisfactory and gratb
lying, inasmuch ns the interest of tho state is involved
and identified with its prosperity and correct manage
ment. Tho amount of Stogk invested by tho Stute, has

terest on each iharo of Capital Stock, a rate of itferest
moro productive than any other investment wliieficould
have been made in any estate real or personal, ^nd at
tended with less /ilk or uncertainty. Tho depression
of our commerce, the depreciated prices' of tho staple
commoditjo*,' the monopolizing epirit which characterises
the times, at these causes operate on individual pros
perity in a tike ratio, effect institutions which afTurd to
tho merchant, tho farmer and tho mechanic tho medium
from which his enterprise receives itrrcwnrd, and his
industry its profit. This Bank*, like other institutions of
the State, has to exorcUo a watchful eye on the schemes
of Brokers, whose avarice and love of gain suggest do-
vices and st ratagetn3, against which, laws arc feeble
barriers, on! oaths but weak restraints. The Bank of
the United States too, wielding ati immense capital
with powers tnnro donccrous and impawn* than ever
were intended to he granted by the States, has, and will,
during its corpirntc existence, have a blighting influence
on tlm State institutions, which will he felt, ns long as that
influence is nmlliy those who direct its operations ami re
gulate its intercourse with Hie Suite institutions. A Hnnk

A letter from Key West to tho Editor nf
the Magnolia Advertiser, .gives a most appal
ling account ofthc mortality which prevailed
in that Island during a few mouths back. It
is dated the 30th of (Jetober, und goes on to
say:—
“ The miseries and sufferings, nnd all the
appalling horrors attendant on Pestilence and
death, have perhaps' never been equalled—
certainly never surpassed by those which
ha ve visited this ill fated—devoted place, du
ring the past season—ol'between 150 and 100
inhabitants who remained to spend, the Hum
mer months on tho Island, upwards of 70 havo
fallen victims to the dreadful malady—But
one solitary individual in the place*(F. A.
Brown, Esq.) has entirely escaped. The
circumstances attending a great proportion of
tho cases, have been such ns to excite a moro
than ordinary degree of sympathy for the suf
ferers. Many died moro from exhaustion,
than from disease. At somo periods tho dis
ease wus so universal, that many who might
with proper attendance and mcdicul aid have
recovered, sunk away for want of a friendly
hand to administer to their helplessness & ne
cessities. Tho scone of wretchedness und
wo, which every where prevailed, no language
has power to describe—nor can imagination
conceive its horrors, without having partici
pated in its dreadful realities. Isolated ns
is the place from any cultivated portion of
country, with no resources within itself for
support, at the season of the year when few
or no vessolspass, n general scarcity prevail
ed, not only of fresh provisions but of almost
every comfort nnd convenience, which tho
feeble and exhausted system requires, to nour
ish and sustain its sinking franio. The small
supply of poultry, which tho Island nftbrdod
commanded prices beyond tho moans of tho
poorer classes to procure. Ilalfgrown ehiek-
ons sold from $1 50 to $2 00 each. The
poor and needy sufferer* consequently had
notFiing to nourish and rcstoro his cmuciutcd
frame, but broad and salted beef, and even
theso wore often debarred him for tho want of
somo friendly hand to administer them.
” Considerable sickness still prevails though
but fbw now cases occur; and the diameter
of tho disease is much milder than hereto-
loro.”
