Fairbaxk's Platform Scales.—It is not often
that we tfre induced to laud an article of trade, and
we never do unless perfectly satixfied (lint wo are
commending something that is useful. We can
not consent to gratify tho cupidity ofun individual,
at the risk of imposing the confidence of thousands
*f our readers who rely upon the bonosty of our
sfitemunt*, if notin the iiifnlibllity of our judg
ment. That great improvements have been made
within a few years, in tho instruments of weighing
merchandise, is n fact familiar to business men.
The antique clumsy slid iunecurate methods of
weighing, have given way to the invoutiun of
Amoric.in mechanical skill, and tho utmost pro
cision has been atiuinod A variety of Platform
Balances are manufactured nnd used, which can
not bo relied on for any considerable aegroo of
accuracy: so that they neeeg-'arily involve one
party in pecuniary loss. It therefore affords us
plonsure io refer to tho Platform Scales of Air.
Fairbanks, whioh have heau extensively used iu
-all parts of the United Stato-for aevoralyoars.nnd
given, ns f*r ns our know ledge extends, very gen
eral satisfaction. We purchased one of these scales
three years since, and have used them constantly
for wo gldng paper, &c. and for occtiracy and du
rability, woaroquite sure, they have not, and per
haps cannot, be surpassed. Tho plan of con-
struo'ion is philosophical and simplo. Tho em
ployment of two levers, with a siuglo beam, is
certainly the most practicable, in a compound
platform balance. Any increase of the number
of levers or an additional bcuin, renders the in
strument more complicated, less precise in iu op
eration anymore liable to derangement. These
scabs are used by many of thu loading merchants
of New York, whose written testimony to their
xuperior excellence has been frooly aceordod to
the manufacturers. j nne g

Aro we not individually cnlled upon, when we
beemuo furnished with any know.edge which, by
more extended diffusion, will promote tho happi
ness and welfare of those around us, to make
known without hesitation such means of relief nnd
comfort! Feeling (his to he my duty, I would di
reel tho attention of those distressed with Fever
and Ague, to the great utility of Mr. Win. Humph
reys’ Fever and Ague Medicine iu that trouble-
some comnluint. Besides having been restored to
universal health and vigor myself, I have had an
opportunity of witnessing another remarkable in
stance of recovery from the use of it, in nnc of the
worst cases. I have tried n great many different
remedies, hut all in vain. I was reduced from a
strong healthy mull, to almost n more xkeletnu. 1
had almost given up that I would get rid of the
complaint, but at luallsuw Mr. Win. Humphreys.

I recommend it to the putdic ns a good nnd simple
