To the Editors of the fi'atiannfl Republican,
Gkntlkmkn My attention aa been arrested by
an articlo iu your paper of tlim uorning, in which my
name iB connected with n canjidacy for Congreiw in
tills District. Tho notice wl/ch yon and tho Geor
gian have bestowed on me in.t think, premature, for
while i recognise the right,« the public freely to
canvass tlie ncrits of tlioso ^hoaro aspirants for pub-
lio places, yet those who hive not aspired, should bo
permitted tlie raposo duo th private station. I would
not now occupy tills space in your columns, but from
tho apprehension that ollance may may bo construed
into nn acqulesenco on my part la tho proposed nom
ination.
I am very grateful for tho hind feeling nnd good
opinion which have prompted your favorable sugges
tions, and those which have been made in your paper,
from various portions of the District, and I will not
deny that I should feel greatly honored in being se
lected as tiie representative of tho National Congress.
Circumstances might exist, while in my conception
of public duty, would compel me to accept a public
trust freely imposed upon mo by the peoplo, but I
havo not been able to discover any circumstance of
peculiar interest, in tho present condition of public
aflhirs, which ought to iuduce mo to disregard my
own feelings.
To those personal friends, who, through tlie partial
ity of friendship, have urged this nomination upon
rao, I have uniformly said that the necessities ol my
private interests forbade my compliance with their
wishes; and,l might add with candor, ray own. I
havo earnestly requested that the public attention
should not be drawn to me in connection with this
ofllce. I have still this favor to ask at the hands of
all, and have felt constrained to assure my friends in
this public way, that I am not, nor can my conaent bo
obtained to bccomo a candidate for Congress.
I am respectfully, your friend,
Fbancis S. Baiitow.

The Vanderbilt Steam Yncht, North Stnr.
Southampton, Thursday—The American steam
yacht North Stur, came into the tidal basin of the
Southampton docks last evening, and to-day has been
tho object of general attention. Her appeuranco, con
struction, aud equipment present so many novel and
curious features to English naval men. that many
opinions have been expressed as to her merits. Most
of tlie old-fangled notions of builders of English ocean
steamers are completely discarded in tho North Star:
and, although it may do questionable whether tho
adoption of so much oftho priociplo of the American
lake and river boats into the uses of Transatlantic
steamships as iu the caso oftho North Star is in the
long rim desirable, yctltis certain that this beautiful
ship is in tho highest degree worthy of attention, and
that many points, particularly those in reference to
her model and water-lines, are eminently calculated
to convey useful hints to builders and steamship
owners on this side, t/Vio/iawc ffmt .«o repeatedly and
thoroughly beaten in the great race of steam ttuoiga-
tion going on between the British and American
steamships.
Tho external appearance of tho North Star, from
the absence of bow-sprit and figurehead, and the ab
rupt termination of tlie bow of tho ship, which is
quite perpendicular, is different from that of any of
tho English steamers, nnd is certainly foreign to tho
ordinurily received views of shipshape appearance on
this side of tho water. Her model is, however, the
perfection of nautical beauty, aud gives proiniso of
tho highest speed at the least expenditure of motive
power. Tho pub ic are freely admitted on board, and
tho ship is exhibited by tho officers witli the greatest
courtesy. The fittings of the cabin are tho especial
theme of admiration of most of the visitors, and it is
difficult to believe that any royal or imperial yacht
could bo supplied with greater luxuries or convenien
ces, or with greater taste and elegance. With regard
to tlie machinery, although its excellence in a me
chanical point of view la udraitted bjonginccrs, yet,
as it sets aside all preconceived notions os to tho de
sirability of working tho cranks at a great elevation
on deck on board ocean-going etcamships, tho Eng
lish marine engineers seem hardly disposed to re
commend tho adoption of tlie principle, foreseeing
that much danger of damage and derangement is buz-
zarded by having so much top-hamper on deck in
heavy weather. Tho rigging of tlie ship is very
Blight, nnd comes hardly under the denomination of
“jury rig,” tho Americans in all cases trusting to the
machinery as tho sole propcling power, ami using
sails merely for the purpose of steadying tlie ship in
a seaway.

Turks Men Killed in this Cherokee Nation—
Horrible and Bloody Work.—On Sunday night
last, an Indian by tho name of Jack Vann, was killed
on tlie opposite side of tlie river from this place, by
another Indian named Nit«, son of Big Nits.
On Monday about 3 o’clock, tho coffin was taken
over from town to the place where the corpso was,
and while the friends ol the murdered man were plac
ing his body in tho coffin, a quarrel sprung up
between Big Nitts, nnd Lewis Vann, the brother of
tho deceased.
Vauu shot down Big Nitta, killing him instantly,
and attempted to escape, but was pursued by tlie ne
phew of Nitts into tho house of Mrs. Vann, widow
of Mr. W. L. Vann, when Lewis Vann turned upon
his pursuer ami shot him dead. In loss than two
minutes ho killed two inen, making three murdered
men lying, as it were, all together, a horrid spectacle
to behold, by any civilized person.—Fort Smith Her
