Another Dreadful Accident Rumored*
WiliMisoroN, Del., July 8, A. M.
The morning freight train on tbe Baltimore Road
ran off the bridge at Brandy wine creek thin forenoon
precipitating the train into tbe water aud drowning
the engineer, named Chtw. Gerven, also the llremau,
whose name la at present unknown. Tho cars are
lying In the creek badly broken.
The keeper in attendance at the bridge Bays that
the usual signal that tho draw was open, was dls-
S et! in good BeoBou, but tho engineer did not tee
id not need it.
The aocldent ocourred to tho half-past 2 o'clock
through freight train: thoenjiieund tender went
completely over, carrying wltn them four cars; tho
remainder of the train escaped. Thu name of tho
Urotnun killed has been ascertained to be Reuben
Titus.
The coroner hold an Inquest on tho bodies, and tho
jury returned a verdict thut the cause of tho accident
and loss or life, was the carelessness of the bridge
tender, whose name is Jatnos Dnlcy.
This man, it appears, when ubout half asleep, camo
out to arrange the signal, placing it so as to Indicate
to those in charge of the train that all wbb right,
when on the contrary, the draw was open.
The inhabitants of the place do not blame the
bridge tender much, as he Is required to do the work
both night and day, thus having but about three
hours sieep in tlio twenty.four. The company are
considered the most guilty.
The Weather.
For some months past we have had a continued
dry season, until many of our farmers had begun
seriously to apprehend the total ruinof our corn und
other crops, indeed, it really seemed as if wo were
about entering upon a disastrous drought. Rut, on
Monday afternoon last, our fears were somewhat re
moved by tlio fall of a plea-ant nnd refreshing shower,
with an appearance of more on the way. Although
tho rain was not heavy in our midst, wo understand
that copious showers have fallen uround us, aud we
trust, not only that our fears of a scarcity will not bo
realized, but that otir farmers may lie enubied to make
a good crop this season—Greenville Patriot, 7tit inst.
Rioton SmrBOAtiD.—Pkobadle MtmnEit op the
Mate-—This morning, neur 2 o’clock, a riot occurred
among the sailors on board of the packet ship Jacob
A. WesU-rveit. lyingut the footof Dover-street. East
Itivi*r. The crew fought with cutlusses.belnying-piua,
and other weapon. Tho origin of the disturbance
we hove not yet fully ascertained. A posse of tlio
Fourt Ward Pol ce were soon on board, and after a
desperate struggle, arrested the followitlg participa
tors in the nll'ray: Daniel Smith, James Crosby, Peter
Campbell, Wui. Robuso, James Hines, Andrew Car-
roll, Andrew August, and Thomas Roach. The llrst
male, named Win. E. Wilson, received two wounds
in the head, und lies in the Hospital in a dying con
dition.—iV. Y. Times, 8th.
Death op Mu. Wkstukn.—We briefly mentioned,
yesterday, the dentil of Henry M. Western, Esq., at
his residence in Lexington avenue. Mr. Western was
65 years of age mid Imd been a prominent member of
tlie New York bar for the last thirty years. He was
formerly an active Democratic politician, but had re
cently become a zealous member of the Maine Law
party. On motion of Henry Brewster. Esq., the
Court of Common Picas adjourned yest. rdny in re
spect to the memory of the deceased.—TV. Y. Com. 8th.
At about eight o'clock last craning our city was
visited by a very heavy thunder storm. The lightn
ing was, at times, very vivid, and the rain poured
down for about an hour in torrents. Brief, however,
as was the shower, it had the effect of purifying and
cooling the overheated atmosphere, and although
vegetation may not have been much hcnelltted by it,
yot suffering, indeed we nitty sny melting, humanity
felt considerably refreshed, ami even exhi!iratecl,
thereby.—Chus. Conner, 11//i.
