u Florid**
From what we havo observed for several months
cast, we havo every reason to believe that wo are
about to lose qaite a number of our cHtaena.iw well
as their neraouai property, by a tide of emigration
towards Florida, and which really seems to be on the
increase. Tis true Florida possesses but a sprinkling
of population compared to her vast extent, but the
success which teems to attend the agricultural pur
suits in this State, baa lately given *a Impulse to
growers both of long and short staple cotton, to seek
its virgin and productive soil, and with tho exception
of the article of cotton, the resources ot tho country
have been comparatively unopened, the climato and
quality of the sofl giving peculiar advantages in this
article over the Southern States. Florida lands are
abundant, hot rising in valuo everyday. Wo hope
none of oor citixcus who have lately removed from
Falrfleld to the El Dorado of tho South will have cause
to regret it, but that they may realise their fullest ex
pectation-good health (?) and high prices; ond fur
thermore, that In a fow years may they all return to

the following letter relative to the steamer " Granite
State,” from which it will be sceu that tho purchase
has not yet been effected:
Baltinorr, October 8,1853.
Messrs. Editors : To correct some inaccuries in the
paragraph copied by you from the National .nielli-
genctr, aud your editorial notice of it, in your paper
of this date, permit mo to say—
That the Committee have every reason to believe
that the draught of water of tho steamer “Granite
State,” offered them for the Savannali trade is not too
great to render her unavailable; but that, in a point
of so much importance, it cannot act until the most
full and exact information is obtained. When obtain
ed, should that information prove satisfactory, tbo
Committeo will close tho arrangement for tho boat os
soon os sufficient means are subscribed, as directed
by tho general meeting held on the 2GIU September.

fer no delay from tho want of sufficient subscriptions
to carry out promptly and effectually the duties assign
ed them, la the performance of which Mr. Manilla
and his associates havo labored so assiduously.
Stcnmahlpv-Sonthern Routes of Travel,
It is only of late years tlmt Baltimore could speak
of having a steam commnnicatioa with any port upon
the Atlantic coast, outside of the Chesaiwake. She
has been to a certain degreo bebind-hand, but the
progress mado in her internal communications, is al
ready producing prospective results. The action of
her merchants, commenced a year or so ago, opened
tho communication with Charleston, and that to Sa
vannah will, without doubt, vcrF soon be commenced.
These enterprises should he followed up, by placing
upon both routes, vessels ol firetrato capacity ami
speed—snob vessels as Baltimore haa turned out for
other cities, and can turn out again. Such vessels as
tho Isabel w, and the Tennessee bids fair to bo.—
These, besides including business men and travellers
to seek this locality, will bo ovidencea of the skill of
Baltimore mechanics, and contribute in that way also
to tho benefit of tho city.
It is fortunate, while it has been determined to in
crease the facilities for business upon tho Charleston
line, that Savannah has been included. For, from
tho recent improvements and construction of new
routes ia tho South, is more than probablo that the
larger portion ofbea going passengers will come from
Savannah. Persons ooming from tho southwest, by
tho Central Georgia Road to 8avannah, to come north
most take steamers for any further progress. But by
coming through Augusta, tboy can either come on to
Charleston, and take steamers for Wilmington or the
North, or else diverging at Branchville, proceed by
tho Manchester Railroad [now almost completed] di
rect to Wilmington, and save themselves, if they feel
disposed, from all sea travel whatever. This will
undoubtedly be dono to a groat extent by those pas
sengers whe come through Augusta. Travellers who
Ihtend to take steamers will have an additional in
ducement to go by Savannah, provided they meet
with equal facilities there, in the economy of time,
and tbo greater certainty or passing tho bar at the
month of the river.
These and other considerations place tho impor
tance of tho commnnicatioa with Savannah in a po
sition to compare with that with Charleston, and wc
hope to see them both in full opporatlon within a very
short period. They will, wo bellve, bo the foreruu-
ners of that greater enterprise, tho oommnnication
by steam with Europe. Entervrtao is only wanting,
and Baltimore to compete with Northern oiticaahonld
not bo behind her sisters of tho South. In Charles-
ton the experiment was tried and failed, through na-
tlonal causes. There was not enough water on tho
bar to allow tho free ingress and egress of a steamer
w tho class required. But tho people or Charleston
have not given np; they are now at work trying to
deepen tbelr channel. Had the ■ experiment boen
tried at Baltimore, instead of Charleston, it would
most probably havo succeeded—Ho/L Times.
