Capt. Richardson, of tho steamer General Clinch,
which arrived yesterday afternoon from Georgetown,
informs us that ho passed at ono o’clock off Cape Ito-
main, the steamer Nina and tlie ship Austria, both
with their color* Union down, indicating that those
on board tlie wreck, somo twenty or thirty, consider
ed themselves in danger, the sea making a complete
breach over the ship, which had the appearance of
soon breaking up, as the mainmast and everything
abovo tho fore-topmast were gono, the mizzenmast
alone standing entire. In consequence of the heavy
sea rolling at tbe time, neither the General Clinch
nor the Nina could render any assistance, but Capt.
Richardson states thut it was the determination of
Capt. Magee, of the Nina, to remain in tho vicinity
of tlie wreck In Uie hope of saving the lives of those
un board, if reduced to the last extremity.
P- 8.—Between 12 and 1 o’clock this morning, wo
were gratified in receiving a visit from Capt. Tessicr,
of the Austria, who informed us that lie and all hands
Imd just arrived from the wreck. In endeavoring to
reach tho schooner brought down on Wednesday by
tlie steamer Charleston, one of ids bouts was smash
ed ; ho, however, took another nud succeeded in get
ting all safely on board ol her, when tho Nina took
her in tow and brought her to this port.
Capt. Tcssier lias also politely given us tlie follow
ing information as to how tho Austria went ashore:
He states that on Saturday, tlie 2l)th ult., ho had no
observation,tho weather being very tbickAadaqaaliy.
At 12 o’clock on Saturday night It blew very hard
from t‘ie north-east, and a* tho ship made great way
through tlie wnter, all sails were taken iu with tho
exception of top sails, which were double reefed, and
tlie foretonmast staysail, uud the lead wus kept going
every half hour.
At half-past 3 o’clock on Sunday morning, the lead
giving loj fathoms, and judging himself half way
between Cape Remain aud Bull's Island, Capt. Tea-
slcr hauled the ship up on tho starboard tack, and
stood in. the ship heading North-west by West on r
wind, and going through the wutcr nt the rate 0/
three miles per hour, and making three points Ice
way. At four o'clock, the same morning, the lead
gave 11 fathoms water, sit a quarter after lour the
sumo, nt five o’clock loj fathoms, nnd exactly nt hall
past five tlie ship struck.
Capt.Tcssier attributes tlie wreck of bis whip to a
defect in tlie charts, ns had the soundings boon pro
perly laid down therein ho would never have ap
proached so near tho shoals. He. also, states it as
his opinion that unless a light ship be speedily placed
in that vicinity more disaster* will undoubtedly oc
cur, especially in thick and squally weather such as
he experienced.
The Austria was left laying on her bottom, but
would float at high water, and Cant. Tessier is of
opinion that her hull will be saved unless a heavy gale
should occur.—Ch. Courier, Sth.
