crop. I.three years sgndetenmneU uutetiy, loyeelt. to make
experiments ot the mixture of my fertilizer and the best
Peruvian Guano In proportions of >4;. ft and Gusno.—
'The result In blmost every case has more, fur more, than
realized my expectation*. 1 knew that In Guano there wns
no trace of scarcely any of the above elements, except Blp.
hosiilmtes and Aluiooiiis. but the latter in such lnrgo pro-
portions that it would stlmulnto a first crop in a ratio pre
cisely ns It exhausted tho laud nnd Impoverished it without
a furl her supply, until finally nnturo. failing to supply tho
chemical projn-rtles required, the soil would become unpro
ductive even to Guano. The Ammonia in Guano, living free
or volntlle. Its escape wltli other eleineuts for which ft lias

Improve the soil permanently, were tlio mutes which sug
gested u union of the Salts and Guano, nnd to which mny be
added, a reduction in price of a costly manure. I was fur
ther inliiieuceil by the knowledge that many of tho ele
ments of which Gun no hns scarcely a trnco, particularly
l’otush. colored largely into chemical prnpertlcn of the Cot
ton plant, nnd that Its presence was absolutely necessary,
in sumo form, for the production of tlio best Cotton.
My anticipations have been realized beyond my hopes,
and justify mo in saying that In tho compound of Guano
and my Suits, I offer you the best cotton manure the world
hat eterteen : and in other crops subordinate to no other
manure. Tills is n loud blast for one who lias been hereto
fore partially silent ; but I honestly conceive such nn ex
pression Is ns due to your interest as mine. Guano con
tains a supply of Diphosphates ami free Ammonia, as can
no where else be found, nnd my Sails every oilier dement
which the soil or the plant rc jiiire*. The philosophy is a
very simple one nod u natural one. Whether 1 am right or
wrong in this confidence in my compound, is a vital ques
tion to the ngricultiirtets of your State ; nnd having the
past year sold, iwrhiips one hundred tons to vnrlous Plant
ers of Georgia. 1 invite them, earnestly invito thorn, to pub
lish the results of their experiments in the public papers,

he more vital to your iutotests ? Is there sny question
more worthy of your Investigation ? Should it not attract
popular attention t Is there not In what has already been
shown, ample reasons for linearly enquiry into its rdativo
value, both for Inndniid crop with Guano alone ! If such
a courso docs not dem -nstrato all I have said, you will not
lie troubled with further communications from me. My ob
ject is. that yon should not be deceived, and tlio moment I
find I am. I would nut continue tlio enterprise for one year’s
cotton crop of your whole State. I have Invested somo
diameter n« well ns money in this enterprise. That 1 have
authority for tlio pi feeding statements, will bo confirmed
by tlio following extracts frm letters emanating from sour
ces entitled to tlio highest confidence nnd consideration.
Under date of’JOtli of test August. Mr. ChrUhnlm again
writes me in regard to the results of the Salts alone:
•• As It is time to think about innkingmanure and other
pro]inrntiona for next year’s crops, those of this year hav
ing received all the attention, except harvesting that we
can give them. 1 him* thought it mlvisablo. front the disap
pointment of oUtcvs the present year, to bo In time with
you. we had a most unprecedented drought, troin 1st of
April to 6th of July, which has told sadly upon must of our
crops, and nlso u]>un the effects of all manure. Of course
tlio Renovator hns suffered ns well as other' manures, but
lately our cotton crops have begun to show tlio good effect*
of your Konovator. A few Haulers havo without any solici
tation on nny part, expressed derided approbation of its ef-
fectsupon the cotton, which thoy did not npnear to have
tlio lenst idea of ever seeing, having applied it on their
poorest nnd most exhausted lands, in hopes, apparently, of
bring able to condemn It. On my colton ll already goes
alioud, one barrel per acre, of 460 bushels of cow-pea com
post. oftlm best material, sedge mid old ]>cnt. I have no
doubt that later in tliu season its effects will be more per
ceptible.
From my own experience. I Minx it to be the bat manure
Ihaix ever teen ajipiitd to Long Slnjile Cotton on my land*,—
As soils differ ns well ns men. others mny think or expo-
ricnco differently, but my rule is 10 be guided br my
experience. In preference tn that of anybody cur
soil nnd situation combined are rather peculiar.
Hunters who have applied Guano largely to cotton al
ready express themselves more satisfied with tho effects of
your Renovator. I drop you this, therefore, to engage iu
good time fully ns much as I engaged last year, and mny
be a little more. You may save 3u0 barrels for me.
From conversation with ITnuters. nnd from observation.
I would ndvtecyou to uso different proportions for different
soil, for instance, for very poor sandy soil*, where growth of
cotton Is desirable, half Gu .110 nnd half Renovator ; better
lands, but still rutlier deficient in growth of plant, one-
third Guatui. or even one-fourth, the rest Renovator ; aud
in good growing lands, where fruitfulness only Is wnnted.
tho Kcuovator nlouu ; nnd in nowly cleared lands, n small
qunntity in the holt with tho seed to give an endy start.—
Hoping Hint your manure may contluue to give satisfac

The following Is from Dr. Horatio Bowen, of Clinton, Ga..

••I11 answer to tlio Inquiries contained in your circular of
30th Juno last. In which you wish to know my opinion of
with legnrd to tho effects of 1 KctVlewelVsGuano and Salts’
on laud mid crops, 1 havo to inform you tlmt the inauspic
ious season during the past Spring and Summer had well
nigh destroyed all hopes of benefit from Its application for
tills year.
My overseer bad applied It to corn plunted very carefully
In drills on old land, last year iu oats, tlio nuinuro applied
in small quantities In about 4 to 6 inches of tho com. and
all covered lightly with n sinnll bull tongue plow.
Coun iuintkii unti.Mi tiik first wkkk of .March.—Soon nf-
ter planting, tho unusually heavy nnd beating nins of Hint
month followed nn<l continued until thc20tn,the weather
bring at the same time cool. Then followed the dry weath
er and still coni, not another drop of rain until the 20th of
Juno, three entire months. Tho result was that not more
than one-third tlio corn ever got up, and fully one-half of
tlmt lmd died. I despaired of making anything from the
little that was left nnd directed my overseer to plow It up
nnd plant iu tlio same rows immediately after the first
rains, hoping that some good effects of the salts might stilt
remain. The second planting was done on tho 21st of June.
The seasons proved favorable, and the corn camo up ami
crew off finely. Ills now in roasting oars, nnd will make
bard earn. In appearance it Is about ns good again ns the
corn in the same field, planted on the same day, but with
out manure of nny kind. The quantity applied was about
160 lbs. per acre. My overseer thinks tlmt qunntity of
salts nnd gunuo has lmd. under nil the disadvantages, ef
fects nlMiii) equal to the application of thirty bushel* of
cotton seed per acre. I mil pleased with tho effects of tlio
salts nnd guano, and wish you to procure and forward uie
tlireo tons of tlio same article, if procurable at any tiling
like the rate of last year ”
Which is again followed by Dr. Baldwin B. Miller lo
Messrs. N. A. llardi-e ft Co., my agents in Savannah :
•• I have delayed answering your letter relative to tlio

which I put it mnture. It Ims already done so now. I

The plaster 1 spread mi the bottom of the hill nnd planted
the Corn on it. I used It oz ; 1 think oz. will do better.

“I have received your noto reqoe-diug the results of niv
experience in the use of KettlewelBs Compound of Agricul
tural Salts and Guana, nnd I embrace tlio present opportu
nity to give it to you ns far iih I sin ablo, I bare, tha pre
sent sensnn. used Blaster of Baris, Mane’s Improved Super
Phosphate of Mine and tho Salts and Guano, and must
give a decided preference to tho Compound as manufactured
by Mr. Kcttlewell.
•*My first experiment wns with a crop of radishes; tho
rows were planted20 inches npnrt. the first manured with
the salts and Gum no, the second wltli Super Phosphate of
Limn, the third had no manure at nil. nnd to alternately
through tlie bed. Tliosotlmt were manured with tlio Salts
and Guano were full 60 per cent better than the others.—
The difference in color could be seen for 100 yards. They
were fit for market several days previous to the other rows,
nnd were more tender and were entirety freo from that
stringency so olijoctiouable to a good radish. There was
no perceptible difference between tlio rows manured with
the Super-I'hospfate of limo am! those that had no manure.
51 y method of using It was tills : I dug a trench from 4
to Cinches deep, and scattered tho Compound in it and
tlion covered to the depth of about tlireo inches, and plant
ed the need. The soil was a black, sandy loam. I also tried
it on sated with a good effect. Upon corn, its effect was
truly surprising.—the land ui>on which it was used was a
poor yellow sand, the ground was thoroughly broken up.
the Compound wns then sowed broad-cast at tho rate of
300 lbs. to the acre, and harrowed in, nnd the ground mark
ed out and planted tlie sarna as the remainder of the field.
The portion thxt wns manured came up first, and has had a
much better apiieiiranco all through tho season than that
which lmd no manure, but was treated in other respects
tbesnine. It has stood the exceeding dry weather ot this
season very well: nnd a nelgliborfi g Planter of twenty
