Thla strange musical feat drew crowds around the

ment. But, alas 1 for tho ill-fated artist, this senti
ment was soon changed In the minds or the Ignorant
multitude Into the most superstitious dread. A rumor
arose that Alix was a sorcerer, and la league with the
devil. He was arrested by order of the parliament
ter ProTenoe, and aont before their criminal court, La
Chambrt de la Timndlt, to be tried on the capital
charge of inagtc or witchcraft. In vain the Ingenious
but unfortunate artist sought to convlnoe his ju> gos
that the only meana used to give apparent vitality to
the fingers of tho skeleton were wfiocla, pulleys, and
other equally unraagical contrivances, and that the
marvellous result produced was nothing more crimi
nal than the solution of a problem In mechanics. His
explanations and demonstrations were either not un

Political economists divide labor into two classes—
simple and educated. Simple labor is that which re

muscular exertion, such as sweeping streets, running
of errands, digging ditches, and handling the hod.
Educated labor is that which requires genius or intel
ligence in its performance. The planning of build
ings, the construction of machinery, aud the keeping
of books,as well u the labor of the lawyer, the phy
sician, the teacher and the [clergyman, arc examples
of this kind.
The reward of labor is regulated by this division.
A man who is only competent to perform the lowest
species of labor, is said to be entitled only to what is
necessary to support the existence of himself and>
thoso who are dependent on hiiu, with a slight,
K ins to support him in old age. Hut when u'pi
u additional skill be ie properly paid for that also.
Thus the physician, who has been to great expense to
acquire the knowledge of his profession, must be paid
for that sacrifice, and tor tho additional tact or talent
brought to bear in the case.
This will explain what seems to many very unrea
sonable, in regard to salaries. One will say," I work
as many hours os my neighbor, and yet he gets double
my wages.” It will bo seen that the ability hits much
to do iu determining the wages. The employer can
well afford to pay the educated man a greater price,
because the labor is more productive. 1’ako tho case
of servant girls. The one who understands her busi
ness, and can tako the lead in managing tho affairs
of the household, can command almost any price;
while the one who must be told how to do every
trifiing thing, cau secure only enough to keep body
and soul together.
Since this theory shows the reason for the regula
tion of wages, It teaches a striking lesson to tho ris
ing generation. Young tueu and women! do yon de
sire to be hod-carriers and door-scrubbcrs? If so,
you have only to labor ou from day to day without
any thought for the future. Take your lite easy.—
Shrink from all difficult labors, and decry study and
thought. Rest assured success will crown your ef
forts.
Or, do you aspire to the position of journeymen—
of first rtrrA—of overseer—of employer? If so,
you must shape your course accordingly. First, you
should acquire a respectable amount of what is call
ed book-knowledge. This is desirable in all the walks
of lile. lt enhances our enjoyment, and adds to our
productive force. The next thing is to choose a de
partment ol labor. Decide whether you will be a
printer or a pork-dealer—a manufacturer or a mer
chant—a preceptor or preacher—a physician ora
farmer. Then in the last place, bend your energies
to the preparation of the required duties. Make
yourselves masters of your respective trades or pro
fessions, and with your eyes on an elevated position,
move forward with the dignity and strength ot edn-
cated manhood. And rest assured that this course
will be crowned with success, and you may hope to
rise to eminence, usefulness and competence, if not
to wealth and honor.—Albany Transcrif't.
A Beautiful Incident.
A few evenings since while wandering amid the
vine embowered tombs and mew*-grown graves be
neath those great forest pines that decorate the Burial
Groand of MUledgeville, iu turning a little copse of
eglantine and myrtle, that had sprang within the
nearly decaying palings that surrounded a place of

whose beaded form and bowed bead prevented the
discovery of our approach until we had come suffi

Upon oar questioning him, he pointed with a trem

Swindling In High Places.
In our nows column yesterday, we published an ac
count of au attempt to swindle the Sbawraut Bank,
by the deposit of a sight draft on New York, and
drawing for the proceeds. The article copied says
that the depositor represented himself to be Mr. C. L.
North, president of the Meriden, (Ct.,) Manufactur
ing Company. There is no doubt that it was Mr.
North himself who had previously been more success
ful in playing the same game on some of tho banks of
this city and Pennsylvania. Previous to this Mr.
North bad borne a good character. He lived at .Meri
den in fine style, aud iu a beautiful house. On one
side of his dwelling was his banking room, on the
other his insurance office, and bo did quite a large
business in both. The amount he obtained from the
several banks varied from $5000 to $10,000, on the se
curity of paper deposited which was supposed to be
good, but proved to be otherwise. In this city he was
introduced to the banks by gentlemen of high respec
tability, none of whom knew that he was calling upon
more than one bank for aid. He bos been arrested at
Meriden and held to bail for a large amoont. Hopes
are expected that a portion of the sums advanced by
the banks will be recovered—.V. Y. Com., 25th.

IIOUENSAt’K’S AVORM SYRUP.
A N article founded upon scientific principle*-eomp«?u&!-

safe when taken, and has iicrer t-een known to fail tn euring _ . . k
the most obstinate cases. Worms ran never exist wbe* j I nz-anenwoec ^>*7. ..

The Tape 'Worm.
This wonu is the most difficult to destroy of all that in
habit the human b,*dy. lt grows to an almost indefiaiK
length, and becoming so c»iled and foteoed in the iates-
tines an ' ‘ ’ " ' fc *
which if
lag that these complaints have their origin from the tape
worm ; consequently they do not u*e the proper medicine#
for their disease, to there who are afflicted with this aw.
ful foe to health. 1 recommend the use of my Worm Syrup
and Liver Fill#; the Syrup to be taken in dnre* cf two ta
ble spoonfuls three time# a day, then take from fixe to
eight of tnv Liver I’ill*. to dislodgeord pass the worm. By
strictly following theso directions, the luosto'ntinate case*
of tape worm can be speedily cured.
Round or Stomach Worm.
This worm is usually found in thesmall intestines, and is
the worm must common to children, yet it i« not entire!;
confined to them, as adults bare frequently been kDown to
suffer with them. Tire symptom* most prominent while
affected with this worm, are hardness and fullness of the
belly, slimy stools, looseness of the bowels, picking at the
nose, a biu'eish streak under the eyes. Ac. If you.or any o:
your children have any of the above symptoms. Hchen-
saek's Worm Syrup can safely be depended upon—bv usic*
it you have a certain, safe and speedy cure ; andti after
using it according to the directions the patient is not re
stored to health.and the worms thoroughly eradicated from
the system, you can rest assured there 1* no remedy beyond
the grave, as for fail, there i« no such word as fail with
those who use my Worm Syrup.
Aacarldea, or Small Thread Worms.
The»« worms, to which the human »jtem is liable, are
most troublesome of all others. They are generally to be
found in the rectum, and if allowed to remain, from the ir
ritalion they pro-luce, lay the foundation for serious disor
ders. such as infiaramation of the bowels, and other de
rangement* of the stomach. The best and safest medicine
that can be used is liobeusAck'* Worm »yrup. Such is the
astonishing power of my medicines oxer Ascaradies.that
I defy any one to produce a case wherfc my Worm Syrup
and liver Fill* are recommended to be used they will not
eure. All that is necessary is to use the syrup in accord-
ances with directions ou each bottle ; and in case a gentle
E purgative is required in order to allay the irritation they
roduce. the Liver Fills, bv their sympathising action and
ealthy operation upon the bowels, is the most pleasant
medicine that can he taken.
HODENSACK'S LIVER PILLS.
No part of the system is more liable to disease than the
liver. It being supplied with numerous blood vessels and
nerve#, and if diseased, the blood of CKirs* flowing thro’
all parts of the holy, produce* liver complaint*, jaundice.

times general languor of the whole body.from this it will
be seen that the di*ea«e owes it* origin to a dteorganisrd
state of the User and Stomach. Bohentack's liver Fill# is
the very medicine to effect a permanent and lasting care,
as they act by rhaogieg the certain morbid actions of tto
system into a healthy aetioe. and rendering tto blood par*
and healthy. *
