, St* JMay 25.—Advices from Kansas
state that the Cunimiltee of Safety in Lawrence
had resolved not to resist the Marshal, but that
the city had been evacuated. The Free Btate
were collecting at Topeka, and would re-
But if the threats against Lawrence were execut
ed. The report, howover, that Lawrence had
been destroyed by Are, has been confirmed by a
dispatch received from Chicago. Tho Sheriff
appeared before the town with an overwhelm
ing force, made some arrests, and ashed for and
received some arms, hut the (teople having re
fused to surrender tho others, he cannonaded
and burnt the town. General Pouteroy, and
Messrs. Hunt and Reeder were supposed to bo
in a place of safety. Governor Rohiuson was at
Lecompton, and the people there threatened to
hang him. It was reported that tho United
States troops were anxious to protect tho set
tlers, hut were not allowed to leave their tents.
Fatal Affray—A difficulty occurred In
R* Bell a, ! d his two sons, Johu A. aud Charles,
and Drs. Troy and Hunter and Judge Bird were
engaged. John R. aud Johu A. Bell were both
instantiy killed by Judge Bird and Dr. Hunter;
Dr. Troy was slightly injured on the arm by a
stick in thehnnds of John A. Bell.
Mu Rinttt u\* a Nkuro—Ry a private letter
from Macon, we learn that Mr. James Stubbs,
overseer on the Lee county plantation of Nathan
Bass, of Macon, was killed the other day by a
negro boy belonging to Mr. Bass. The boy had
been quarreling with another, and Mr. 8. had
the offender locked up in the smoke-house until
he could make it convenient to correct him. A
butcher knife bad beeu left in the smoke-house,
and the negro managed to get hold of it, sever
ed the cords that bouud him, and then placed
himself at the door ready to use the knife when
any one should enter. As Mr. Stubbs did this,
the fellow stabbed him in the abdomen, causing

More Indignation Meetings in Mahbaciiu-
setts.—Boston, Mau 2.5—The largost meeting
ever held In Faneulf Hall assembled there last
evening for the expression «r its Indignation at
the assault on Senator Soniner by Hon. Preston
L. Brooks, of 8. C.
, Gov. Gardinor presided, aided by 40 Vice-
Presidents, Including tho most distinguished
men of all parties.
Gov. Gardiner characterized the assault us ex
ceeding in grossness and brutality anything
in the pages of history, and called upon
:e pages of history, and called upon
Congress to expel tbe assailant.
His sentiments were responded to throughout
by tramfadous cheering.
Appropriate resolutions were adopted after
speeches from gentlemen of all political parties,
many of which were warm and defiant lu their
tone, and drew forth tumultuous responses.

which Thomas Williams Is aud lately was master,
that on tho night of tiie tilth of April, in 7 .tho year
eighteen hundred aud iiity-six, tlio said ship Eliza
beth was lyiug in tho River Savuunuh, at Venus’
Point, welllu shore, and wus at that time a staunch
and well built ship, of tbo burthen of nine hundred
and fifty tens, or thereabouts, nnd sufficiently pro
vided with apparel, tackle and furniture, and pro
perly maimed with a sufficient crew to work and
uavlgate said ship, that ou the said night of tho tilth
of April, eighteen hundred aud fiity-six, about seven
o’clock In tbe evening, a slgual lantern was hung
out iu tho foresluy or said ship Elizabeth: that ubout
eight o’clock on tbo night of tho said tilth of April,
whilst tho said ship Elizabeth was so lyiug at Venus’
point, in tho tiuvauuah River, withiu tbe obb aud
flow of tbe tide, uud witbin tho admiralty and mura-
time jurisdiction of the District Court of tho United
States, for tho Southern District of Georgia, securely
moored, tho steamship Kuystouo btate, whereof
Robert Hurdlu was master on her way irom Phila
delphia to tbe city or Savannah, came up tbe Savan
nah River under full headway, and then and thero,
with great force and violence, ran into and upon the
said ship Ellzubutb, smashing tho side of the fore
castle of said ship Ellzubcth, brooking five of tbe
forecastle beams, started tbe dock, curried away
tiie bowsprit, aud other damugo did to the said ship
Elizabeth, os iu said libel is stated, rendering It ne
cessary to diseburgo u liurt of her cargo, and to
bring her up to the city of bavauuah for repairs, at
great expense and loss of time; that it is impossible
to ascertain exactly what will be the extent ol' tho
damagos, but as far as calculation can bo wuao the
damage sustained by such collision to the said ship
Elizabeth, amounts to tho sum or ten thousand Uoi
lars; that this occurred in the admiralty aud mura-
time Jurisdiction of said Court, all of which the libel
lants pray leavo to furnish proof or, and have also
prayed a decree for their damages aloresuid, and
costs, and that the ordinary procoss may issue.
