The Charleston (Kanawha) Republican of the
17th; notices the violent death, on the 14th, ol
Kd. Kennu.Esq., a gentleman well known in
connection with internal improvements in the
Western part of this state. He wus a member
of the Gliuvlchtou bar. The Republican gives
the following account of the affair;
Ou ‘Saturday last, when the boarders at the
Kanawha House were assembling fur dinner,
and the sitting room between the bar and din
ing room wus pretty well crowded, Mr. C.
Smith demundeU of Edward Kcnrm, Esq. an ex
planation or retraction of u chm-ge made
against him through Mr. WutL Keuna denied
or explained the said charge to tho satisfaction
ol Mr. S., and as he turned from Kcnua to leave
the room, Mr. Watt called Kentia a ’’liar,” and
struck him with his fist A scuffle ensued.
Neither of tho parties had weapons. At this
instant thcro were in the room three or four
discharges of a pistol or pistols.
Mr. Kcnim fell and expired iustuutly; u bull
striking him iu the back, passing through the
vital parts (probably the heart,) and lodging
immediately t nler the akin below the right nip
pie. Mr. wait received two slight wounds-
from bullets—one making a creaso ou his head,
attd the other entcriug UU left arm and pussed
down to near the elbow, where it wus extract
ed. Much excitemeut prevailed in and about
the hotel. No oue could tell who fired the
shots—such was the suddenness of the affray,
and the consequent confusion in the room that
no one saw'a pistol in the hand of any one.
The coroners inquest rendered a verdict!
that Mr. K.’s death was caused by wounds in
flicted by James V. and Andrew D. Lewis, UU
brothewln-law. All the parties are gentlemen
of high social position. The Circuit Court of
Kanawha adjourned through respect to the de-

of things brought down by the Loire and the

The accounts from Bauinur of the ravages
committed by tbe Loire and the Authien are
even more distressing than those previously re

that place gave a fine example of courage and

with their horses, they saved many invalids
and lullrm persons from certuiu death, and
compelled the inhabitants to leave their dwel
