A meeting of said Committee is requested at
this office at J past 8 o’oclck this evening.
Effects of tHh blow on Sunday.—From
the most reliable information we learn, that no
damage of any consequence has been done to
the Rice crops on this river. • ,
We see that a Kansas meeting has been held
in Memphis Tennessee, which was veiy large
ly attended, and a committee .was appointed or
ten from each ward, to collect contributions in
aid oi Kansas.
We have been informed by a delegate to the
Thomasville Convention that he was obliged to
return, having only gone an far as Macon. Tbo
recentstormund rains have broken up the com
munication on the Southwestern and, Muscogee
Railroads. No trains have come through sinco
Saturday. The storm is said to have raged
with great violence in the interior. The mill
and buildings owned by the Messrs. Wadley, 70
miles on tho Central Railroad, Were very much
damaged by the wind. The wind must, have
been more severe there than with us; it never
blew hero vfitU. sufficient violence either to nn»
root buildings or blow down trees. /

“No good cometh out of Nazareth.” What
ever i3 done under demoerntJo rule Is, par con
sequence, wrong. Upon this text are preached
all the sermons of tho Republican. Sometimes
it charges boldly, and attempts proof—again it
»lily iusiuuutes, and leaves all sorts of infer
ences to be drawn. Of this latter is its allusion
t) the number of registry tickets granted this
year. "There has been an increase of 688
voters in tbo last twelve months." "This is tru
ly marvelous.” "That a large number or persons,
whose names are registered are not entitled to
the elective franchise, .is evideut; and the
fr.eudsof law and order should see to it that
these bogus citizens are not admitted to tb?
p)lh.” "There is something rotten in the state
of Denmark;” and who has made this corrup
tion? Why, of course, the Democrats,—not
the American party, whose escutcheon'Is em
blazoned with the emblems of purity—"pority
of the ballot box”—pure American voters”-
"native3 to the manor born”—"no foreign
aliens, vipers in our bosom politic, to sting us
when warm.” Oh, no I not the American par
ty.
All tlie Police officers in blue uniforms and
Wad-uniforms, who for the last month have
boon protecting the degraded Irish on their
way to tho Registry office and pocketing their
Tickets, ore. oil Democrats. No American
would do this? of course not. Those who have
beeu busily engaged in buying tickets which
they could not vote and tearing them up. They
two ure Democrats. All the poor foreigners
two who have been employed by the city for
the past two or three months, where are their
tickets ? who has them, the Democrats of conrs e
All the 516 voters of 1864, who did not vote
Were, of course Democrats, who were afraid to
vote. All those who died in 1854 were Ameri 1
cans. Yellow Fever Is a native, and would not
•ouch a foreigner.
But, seriously, does it never occur to the Re-
puWicun, that votes are lost,—that men regis
ter and yet wont, vote, and that the Registering
this year saves them a double tax next year?
We remember, the Ifon. j. m. Berrien once
could not vote because ho had lost his tickot,
bow many less careful men do the same thing?
Cannot men be induced to stay away from the
polls? is there no such party policy ? Pshaw,
fet the Republican come out manfully with Its
charges and sustain..them. Dont fight by in-
ucudo! Nor try to frighten men from the polls.
We remember Ipst year agreat noise was made
about illegal voting, some poor fellows were
imprisoned, the county made to maintain them
for a long time, and when their cases came
teforo the Grand Jury, they -were dismissed

A Quaker eU Court,—Mr; Justice Wlllea re
cently observed a member of the Society .of
Friends Heated in the grand jury box with his
hat ou. Addressing him, his lordship said -
Sir, I sec you with your- hat on in Court;' I
must request you to take lt off; I don't assfime
it to be done with any intentional 1 disrespect
onyourpart,aslknow that members of your'
lersnasion have an- ohJectiuu to taka off'your
mt in tmy assembly. Bat wearing the hat has
nothing todo with religion; the hat is a mere
covering for the head, which every ouo in
Court has taken off but yourself. 1 don’t wear
my hat; and [ hope that your own good so.ise
will point out to you the propriety of taking
yours off, and you will obhgo mo by doing uft.
The Quaker gentleman said to nls lordship'
—‘*.1 don't thiuk good sense has^anything to do
with it. I am a member of a persuasion that
for 200 years, has objected to remove the hat
in any presence, and I object therefore to re
move mine. I was roughly , handled in court
this morning for refusing to take it off.
His Lordship—I am sorry to hoar that. I
have rtar relatives of my own who are of
your persuasion, but I never knew dny of them
object to remove his hat when reasonably re
quested to do so. Your persisting to weur your
hut is a mark of disrespect, aud if you choose
to persist in wearing it 1 must request you to
retire .from tbo court?'
Tho Quaker gentleman here; amid a general
titter, walked out of the grand jury box and
the court with his hut' W611 on his head, and
with tho stiff necked bolt-upright gait of a man
who has successfully performed a disagreeable
but great moral duty.
Tho first .ficase called on was a charge of
barglary, and the first to support the charge,
was a Quaker named Wright, (prosecutorj)'who
appeared without his hat and ufflrmcd:
His lordship, in summing up, alluded to what
had taken place, contrasting the conduct of Mr.
Wright, who had business there, with that of
tho Quaker gentleman who had neraisted iu
wearing his hat, and who appeared to liave no
business at the court.
Mr. Wright, the witness, here stood up, and
protested that,he liad no iutentlon to sliow any
disrespect to the court in what ho had done.
His lordship looked at the witness With a
puzzded air. and said, “ What, are you the
{ontleniau who just now left the court with hts

The witness admitted that he was, amid much
amusement, with his hat off.

Happy State op Existence.—In the pres
ent exciting tiittis, the following picture of an
old man, residing near the Castle Springs, Pu.,
as given by the correspondent ot the Phila
delphia Ledger, is peculiar refreshing:
“In one of, our rumbles we catno across a
hamlet oil the foot of the mountain. An old
man was sitting on a rude bcuch at the door;
tbe.placo was so quiet, secluded,'and the pros
pect over the valley so enchanting that wo
concluded to rest it few minutes. Entering
into conversation with the old niau, we ascer
tained that he was iu his ninety-first year, und
bud lived nearly all his'life within sight of
that spot. Hermit like, as his life had been
away from town thd cities, and partaking in
none of tho advantages as well as troubles and
foibles of society, we could not resist tbe curi
osity of drawing him out on sumo of tlie lead
ing topics of tho day. We found, as is the
case with most very old people, that his recol
lection of events which oecurred more than
half a century ago, wasveiw good, but of tho
present and more recent ofliiirs ho was almost
entierely oblivious.
- "He recollected when Washlngonn was Presi
dent, and had some faint glimmering of remote
events hi tbe political world. Of the present
incumbent bo had no knowledge and aid not
know his name. He had not eveu heard of the
Brooks and Summer affair, und ho supposed it'
was nothing more than a common fight, like
scores he hud noun at phoiitjng matches apd. other
js in iiis time. Steumships crossing tbe
ocean he had never heard of, aud the telegraph
wash wonder too incredible for belief. His
habit had beeu to go to bed at dark, as it saved
iight, andbe rose at daybreak. He said tho
fowls did it, and he sup| osed nature taught
them ho. He enjoyd good health, and seemed
to be - wearing gradually away • with old ago,
sinking into tho listless, dreamy state, which
makes tho passage from life to death scarceely
perceptible. .
One of tub Polk Men.—Among the many
anecdotes of the late gubernatorial canvass, we
beard ono tho other day which illustrates the
progress of intelligence iu certain portions of the
State where a newspaper is os great a curiosity
as a roll of Egyptian papyrus.. A settler down
in .the swamp country, having heard that Mr.
Polk would pass along tho roau near his house
on a certaiu .day, and that he would be known
by tho two famous white mnles, determined to
S et a look at the great man of whom he had
card so much. Seating himself on a log, be
waited patiently for several hours, whittling a
piece of red ccdiir,' and whistling the "Arkan

came trotting down tho road, and th t swamp-

say, stranger, your name - is Polk, ain’t
Being answcied in the affirmative, he jumped

Judge—Howto that 7
Futuer—it is easily understood. In every
theatre there exists the following regulations:
Art. 1. When the stage directions require an

Art. 2. Every actor who Bhall kiss an ac

Art. 3. Pressing an actress upon the heart

Now, Narcissus has pressed my wife to his

Narcissus—It’s more than it’s worth.

Father—My wife declares to the contrary.
Narcissus— That’s good; do you expect your

The Charter Oak.
A dirgo, a dirge for tiio bravo old oak,
That helped to tnako us free I
Lot the vallies ring with tho ech woke
By a dirgo for tbe fallen troo!
It has stood for centuries, strong aud bold,
IU broad arms stretching high;
And Its lofty head, os it swayed, has told
The tale of our liberty.
Far back in the years; in Its early morn,
It was held a sacred thing ;
Aud tho red man wutohod, to plant his corn,* * *
Its leaves as they open iu Spring.
And when in our fathers’ fiery zeal
They struggled to bo free,
It hold in Its inasslvo trunk the seel
Of our sacred liberty.
It wait grebn to’tho last, and towored high
.Vs it rocked in its ancicut pride,
And Itsoemod a champion ofrroedom and truth,
, As it tossed IU strong arms wblo.
And we thought, os we looked on-ttr noble form
Uprearlng to the sky*
That while it could battio with wind and storm
‘for llborty could not dlo.
It fell—tho Blurdy tree—at last,
When a tempest, wild, did blow,
But, railing, it facod tho angry blast,
Aud bowed, to moot its foo!
Thou a dirgo, a dirgo for the bravo old oak
That helped to inako us free!
Let tho values ring with tbe echo woke
By adlrgefor tho fallen tree !
