Cabinet In Council on the Subject.
Washington, Friday, Sept. 19.—It 1s under
stood here that the Cabinet is busily engaged
in discussing steps to be taken iu regard to
the Panama massacre of April lust.
The report made by the Commissioner sent
by our Government to investigate tbe circum
stances ct that affair, te said to be unexpectedly
strong against tbe authorities of Panumu, aud
established either their complicity to the massa
cre or their utter inefficiency in preserving the
peace ol the Isthmus.
Mr. Corwiue, it te rumored, recommends
measures of retaliation, aud proceedings to se
cure the further safety of transit across tbe
Isthmus, which will excite universal attention,
not only in this country, but throughout Eu-
rope.
A portion of the members of the Cabinet are
said to be in favor of the most decided meas
ures, and that the President te only restrained
by the protest of the more conservative mem
bers from seuding a fleet to take possession of
the port of Panama,
Accordig to this, the Democrats have a ma

A correspondent of tbe Delta writing of tho

Well does the writer remember tho first tinio
he heard John Randolph, of Ronoake, in de
bate, in this chnni -er. Indeed, he had never
heard or seen him qefore. It was thirty six
years ago. The orator was pronouncing a

time to hear lite closing remarks in prate© of
the canine race. He can never forget him.
“The dog,” said he, “Mr. Speaker, is the only
animal, as Addison lias justly remarked, that
has associated with man six thousand years,
and has contracted but one of his bad habits—
they tear eacli other.” He thinks that Mr.
Randolph credited the remark to Addison, but
confesses he te not so thoroughly acquainted
with the works ot that accomplished writer os
to speak positively. Presently Mr. Randolph
began to panugyrize Chief Justice Marshall.
Some one whtepered to him that the Chief Jus

Rodriguez, tbe man who betrayed Roman
Pinto—may his soul rest ii peace—has, I learn
been shot at Madrid, in a manner very similar
to that which Castenada was shot In this city*
Both of these scoundrels have met with too
easy a death for the baseness of their crimes.
A lingering torture te what they both merited.
Was it not that my authority for the follow-
lug is of the most undoubted respectability, I
should scarcely dare repeat It.
One of the 44 Merchant Kings” of Matanzas
is named T e. Some time since he sent his
wifo and children to Madrid, where an English
governess was engaged to superintend the ed
ucation of the children. Mrs. T—e, it also
appears, received the visits of a paramour,
which so offended tbe prudent, virtuous Eng
lish governed, that she gave notice of her In
tention to leave, and threatened toinform Senor
T e. unless the visits of tbe paramour were
discontinued. This threat so incensed Mrs.
T o that she procured poison, and adminis
tered it to the English governess, who was thus
murdered. The British authorities at Madrid,
hearing of the affair, prosecuted Mrs. T— to
conviction, and she was according tried, “found
guilty,” sentenced, and suffered death by tht
“ vile garrote.”

Later from Kansaa.
Our advices from Kansas are to Sunday last.
All was then quiet, but Lane had not disbanded
his forces, though manitestiug some inclination
to do so. A large number of men, many of
them from Missouri, who have claims in the
Territory, and intend to reside there, have been
enrolled as Kansu militia, and will, if Lane
:ives any further trouble, bo used against him.
Jtill, the probabilities are that his ragamuffins,
having grown tired ef the service, will desert
and leave him. It te Lane’s polioy and that of
the Black Republicans to keep up the agitation,
if possible; but if Gov. Geary Is the man we
take him to be, he will make summary work
with these insurgents. Let him give quiet to

DIED, at the residence of her father, Mr.
James L. Hart, in Leon County, Florida, on
the 28th ult.,Mra. Sarah A. wire of C. Ever-
ette Johnson, In the 24th year of her ago. Sur
rounded aa W08 the sublet of this notice by all
that makes life attractive, enshrined in tbe af
fections of loving hearts, and tho idol of the
family circle—at a time, too, when existence
wore anew charm, and the golden portals of
life were open wide bdfbre her—came the noise
less messenger. Stricklin in the bloom of youth,
leaving parents, husbanded brothers to mourn
the loss of her they loved so well. To those
afflicted parents we tender the sympathies of
our community. The attainments, amiable dis
position aud high moral endowments of the de
ceased have endeared her to all who knew her.
otherwise than that she should be dearly loved
and deeply lamented. Her distinguishing char
acteristic was moral purity. However we might
be Btruck with her powers and varied acquire
ment*, wo were still more impressed with the
stainless purity of her mqraf sentiments. She
was kind in every feeling, generous in every
impulse. But lu the domestic circle her in
fluence was most deeply felt. Society and and
friends, will mourn their loss, but there te a
gloomier vacancy at the fireside of a homo
once light by her smi^e. In tho tender rela
tions ot the family she Was all that a husband
or brother could desire, or a parent lore.
It wos her studio relieve every care and
lighten every burden that might darken their
pathway to the grave. How well she succeeded
in this beautiful part their past love and present
grief will amply testify. They leaned upou her
as the gentle and ptiant stay or their declining
years, and amid toe desolatiou that new lies
arouudth-iii there will be much of consolation
In the remembrance of her unwearied care to
smooth the downhill of life to their tottering
steps. But iu her Christian faith a surer consola
tion Btauds. The consciousness of a well spent
life gave her the full assurance of the reward of
the righteouq, gnd when summoned to “walk in
white because of her woi thioeas." She passed
“through tho gates iuto tho city” without cause
of fear. The lamp of truth bad lit up the “dark
valley,” and she heard adown its lonely lengths
the footfalls of her accompanying Redeemer.-—
Peace to her ashoa, for
She lived agoutle life, lost aho should break
Sumo tie of friendship or some chord of love,
Ur wound tho chorUned rights of others dear.
Thus trite entwined ho Heir around tbo heart,
And gained tho highest friendship of the good,
A friend ship which Illumed the path of lllc
And lighted e’en tho pathway to tbe grave,
Her virtues won her til of private love,
Her kiadnoss *11 of public praise. H.
