it is uot only with pleasure, but with feelings
of pride that we present to tho citizens of-Sa
vannah, to-day, tho Democratic nominations
far Mayor aud Aldermen. It seems to us that
the requisites of a good nomination, are that the
ticket should be led on by a man of probity
etaudiug and worth—one connected with all
the gtcat improvements of the city, aud whose
history is interwoven with that of the prosperity
of the plaeo of his residence and his social and
pecuniary interests.
in the Aldermen it Is' necessary that they
should represent all the material interests of the
city, and should be men worthy to sit as the
Legislators aud Governors of the city.
In offering to the public the name of Dr.
James P. Suufven for the former, it strikes us
that the rule we have laid down has been tully
complied with. His known character makes it
unnecessary for us to say a word in his behalf;
but his connection with and his unceasing in- ‘
bors lor the prosperity of our city gives him a
chum upon our citizens, which it is our duty as
well us our pleasure to record.
Thu prosperity of Savaenah took au impetus
in the year 1849, and has been rapidly progress,
ing up to this time. Dr. Screven, from that
time up to the present, has tikenun active
part in the public aflairs of the city. There is
no improvement with which he has not been
connected; no stouo has been left unturned by
him to further ns well the health, the conven
ience, mid commercial prosperity of tho city.
It would bo needless for tis to enumerate bis
good works; they arekuown and appreciated
hy every citizen. The greatest work
which lie has ever undertaken has been the
6nlf Railroad; in our eyes, by far the greatest
enterprise tho city of Savannah has ever era
barked in. We Hay, with perfoct confidence,
tint had it not beou for Dr. Screven, there
would uot have been a crosstie or a rail now
laid on our southeast common. He had oppo-
sltiou here, aud strong opposition ; but bya
deu-imined perseverance, and an unconquera
ble energy, the locomotives of his road may be
mnv heard on tho other side of the Ogeeehco.
His private meaus have been always at the
command of that great pnblio work.
Dr. Sure von was tho unanimous choice of his
party, and declined tho nomination, but the
Democrats said that ho mud servo them, and
renominated him without a dissenting voice.
With such a man we may safely appeal to
the citizens of Savanuah; and with a Board of
Aldermen, representing all classes and In.
tervata ef the community on a basis of per
fect {quality) the merchant, tho lawyer, the
inecbauic, tho physician, iu fact all our trades,
occupations uud professions here tindngaplao
we may safely claim the suffrage of the
people—With such an admirable combination,
and such men-, success is alreadyattained.

Hie following remarkable criticism : “ The

that a large section of tho Church of Christ is
caricatured aud misrepresented by u singular

A gentleman, now on a visit to Maryland, writes
ns follows to one of the editors of the Georgian:
** Beptcmbor 92nd.
.# On Thursday last it was my good fortune to
hear a speech in Pennsylvania, from the Hon.
Howell Gibb, of Georgia, it was a speech such
as a NutlunnlDumucmtalone couldlmvode
livered in a free State, and yet it would havo
been listened to witlimnjuulilledappobrationby
every intelligent planter, from tho I’utonmc to
the Uio-grundc. Nobly did thu patriotic Geor
gian defend the constitutional rights of, tho
South, aud vindicate the justice of thoso Died-
sttres for which she is tiow so slanderously as-
nailed. Earnestly and eluquontly did he call up*
on the conservative meu or ail purties to rally
to the support of the uiuuutUutcd iters and
stripes, and witli one loud shout for thu Uuiou
to hurl back the wild torrent of reckless fanati
cism, which now threatens to overthrow our
ouly buud of uuiou us a mitbn, tho sacred Con
stitution.
The people to whom he spoke were from
three States, l’enuayivauia, Murylaud and De
laware—they numbered thousands, aud yet,
with a single marked exception, they appeared
to bo of ouu mm J and ouo voice—aud that voice
weut up iu shout after shout until tho woods
resouudod with the watchword “Buchanan aud
tho Uuiou, down with tho woolly liorso.” The
enthusiasm, iu Pennsylvania, for James Buchu*
uau is immense—aud Howell Cobb is doing
much to bring about a correct state of iceliug
among thu musses of tho people, by appealing
to their judgment. His arguments, they are
convinced, urs totally uuauawerable—“and alb-
answering'', as 1 heard a geutlemun present re.
mark.
Ouo thing struck mo us a Southern man
the shot were all thrown at the Republicans;,
tbe so-called 1 American party is uot so much os
noticed by the Demoeraflo speakers lu the freo
States. This fact speaks 'volumes; and yet
here in the slave State of Maryland tho Ameri
cans .,(?),are carrylug mi the bitterest warfare
aguiqst these sumo Democrats. They say they
aro detenniued, if* possible, to throw the elec
tion iu the House, und are willing to run any
risk to dofeat James Buchunau.
You have doubtless seen the result of the late
old tine Whig Convention assembled in Balti
more. Tlic old line Whigs about here laugh at
the bold face impudence of the farce. But you
are fully able to estimate this grand Nalionul
Convention at its real value. The wholo show
wbb gotten up for the benefit of this State. They
Btill„cling to the hope of currying Maryland ; by
that, the election goes into the House. Such
is the old Whigcry that recently assembled in
tiie Monumontnl city, but not the old National
Whigery of this broad laud.

Heelinnlcs uutl Aridocrnry,
Messrs. EditorsIu this morning's Repub
can au article appears slgucd “ Merchant,” in
which tho Democratic party is charged with
having refused the ubmiuation of Mayor to a
worthy and excellent citizen, because he was
an '• humble mechanic.”
The motive of this writer must have been to
excite the prejudices, of the numerous friends
of the gcntleiuau alluded to against the present
candidate of the Democratic party. Let him
bo assured that iu this ho must fail.
Tho name of this “ iht.miilh citizen”appears

of his friends, and, it chosen, he would have
served his party. Another was ehoesu, but
Mr. Walker was neither “decapitated or thrown

feelings of friendship remain uuciiuugcd uud
at tins moment they arc muted baud iu band
fur thu success of Democracy. The Mechanic
has been always esteemed und is now fully re
presented upon the Democratic ticket. Ju the
words of Jcukius, may this putty ho called the
"Iron Ribbed Democracy,” when Mil lei at the
Eastern cud aud Lacldisou ou ino Western

your prejudices, u> lie has thrown out.

Is there nut just a little aristocracy on their

Will Mr. Buchanan Withdbaw ?—For a
satisfactory reply to this oft-reiterated Inter-
ragatojy, the pious editor of the Evenicg Bul
letin, for somo days past has ovediently been
on the “uuxious bench.” Again and again is
the question asked, und answer demanded. If it
be auy relief to the editor of that journal, we
wifi state that wo are authorized to reply to his
question iu the affirmative. Mr. Buchanan does
intend to “withdraw.” Iu obedience to tb£
call of the American people? ou the 4th day
uf March, iu the year of Lord 1857, It is his
purpose to “withdraw” from his calm and
peaceful retreat at Wheatlund, to take pos
session of the White House, at Washington,
In tho capacity of President of the United
States. This is the only withdrawal, however,
thut Mr. Buchanan has in contemplation. Is
the editor of tbe Bulletin satisfied, or does he
repeat the silly question in his prayer 1—Penn'
‘sylvanian.
No Volunteers Required in Kansas—It

The regular troops under Gen. Smith, with the
Kansas militia mustered into service, will const!
