Is that law ? Is that order 1!
Under a Democratic administration, a sale of
tho stocks of the city was considered a matter
of so much moment that an ordinance was in
troduced by Alderman Cohen, in 1850, to pro
vide for the redemption and payment of the
city debt incurred for internal improvement,
nod to authorir.0 the sale of stock owned by tho
city in the Central Railroad. When Dr. Arnold
was Mayor au ordinance was passed to repeal
tho above recited ordinance.
This was Democratic Law and Oudku.
During Mayor Anderson's administration a
Him pie resolution of Council is considered
sufficient authority for the sale of tho city
stoeks. We have carefully searched the lulu-
utes of Council, and ean find ho ordinance to
authorize it. This is Know Nothing Law and
Order.
At the close of the municipal year of 1854,
Mayor Ward states in his annual report that
tho Central Railroad stocks owned by the city

precincts. Jacksonville, in Duval county which
gave the Americans lost year an average iua-

has bten regarded by both parties, as the Know

it is sitututed, being one of the very few coun

We are sorry to observe the replies
which the candidates of the American party
have thought proper to make to the very re
spectful interrogatories of Mr. Wm. J. McIn
tosh. They voluntarily ottered to make unswor
if a responsible name was giveu. This prere
quisite lias been complied with, over the signa
ture of one of our oldest ami most respectable
citizens. The result has been a distinct, delib
erate ami wiUfulWlgc. if they had chosen to
remain silent, no one could have objected, but
the desire to reply was boastfully put forth in
the Savaunah Republican. Wo give below the
Questions and Answers, and will allow an im
partial public to draw tlie inference, which Is
too palpable for any one longer to doubt:
[communicated.]
To the candidates for Mayor and Aldermen
on the American Ticket.
As a citizen of .Savaunah, feeling au interest
iu her present and future welfare, I desire re
spectfully to moke the following inquiries:
If elected, will you, or will you uot, re-instate
the Young America Fire Company in the tiro
organization of the city ?
Are you or are you uot, iu favor of chauging
old fire organization, and if so what chan
ges do you propose to make.
Do you, or do you not, approve of the present
system us it now exists'/
Mr. Allen and Mr. Willink, have you, or have
you not, openly expressed youiselves as in favor
of abolishing the black Firo Companies and
having u white organization only ?
These questions are asked in uo spirit of uu-
kiuilness, but with a view to ascertain the truth
and an ourly reply is respectfully requested by
A. Citizen.
Aiuwer to Mr. Mclutnali.
We are authorized by the candidates on the
American and Law and Order ticket, to give
tho following answer to the interrogatories pro
pounded by Mr. W. J. McIntosh:
To the first they answer, that if elected, aud
the Ynnng America Fire Compunv should call
for a hearing, it will bo grunted. They will
deem it their duty to hear all appeals that may
be properly presented by any citizen, however
humble. In cases which may come before them
for judgment, their object will be to vindicate
tho innocent, to punish the guilty, to do justice,
and to repair injustice it any has been done. In
the application ol these mica, the Young
America Fire Company will not be made an
exception.
As regards tho tire organization of tho city,
wo are authorized to say that tho American
and Law and Order candidates have not pro
posed or spoken of a ebango in the present
system of the Fire Department; their object
will lie to give it all tho efficiency of which it
incapable. Should changes become necessary
iu this or any other branch of the public ser
vice, it will, of course, become tho duty of tho
city government to act with wlso and careful
consideration, and in couforraity with anellght-
ened public opinion.
The candidates of the American and Law
and Order party have no secret dcs.gnsor
projects; but if elected, will endeavor to do
their duty to the city of Savannah and all its
interests, and to execute the laws faithfully and
impartially.
The two geutlemen to whom a special inqui
ry has beon addressed have authorized us to say
that they liavo not expressed the opinion at
tributed to tlii-m, to-wit: that they are in favor
of abolishing the black companies, and having
only white ones.

To the Rdiiors of the Savannah Georgian
In the Savaunah Republican of this morning
we observe a communication signed by several
respectable gentlemen uud mercantile firms of
this city, announcing that they do not approvo
the law changing the time of holding the Char
ter election of Savannah, aud that they (cel
“certain of its injurious effects upon the best
interests of tho city," yet requesting the dele
gation from Chatham Couuty to “iuform the
public on whose petition the change in the day
of “lection was made, aud also what reasons of
public policy controlled iu Uh passage."
With all proper respect of the signers of the
call individually, and willing to confer person
ally with any one of them on this or uny other
subject connected with the discharge of onr
public duties, we do not acknowledge the right
of any unmoor of persons, howover respectablo
to forco us, through the columns of a newspaper
to give explanations of tho many reasons which
influenced onr notion as the representatives of
tho people of this county. Especially do we
decline to acknowledge tho authority of such
a cull, emanating, with scarcely an exception,
from political opponents, who auununce .that
they have prejudged the case and have pro-
nouuced u decision directly udverse to oiir ac
tion in tho matter. We are forced to believe,
therefore that the signers of the call do not seek
to be convinced of tho correctness of our course,
but lmve resorted to this publication merely fo r
party effect.
We acknowledge our responsibility to the
constituency wo represent, aud whenever they
dtsiro an account of onr official conduct, and
afford u suitable occasion, wo will cheerfully
appear before them for that purpose.

Dear Sir: Your letter or the 24th lost., iu-
yiting me to meet in discussion the Hoq. Wm.
O. Goode at your next court, came to hand last
eveniug. I hasten gratefully to acknowledge
the compliment it implies* and to express my
thankfulness ter the honor done me by the
CentraKommitteo at Uiohmond, and the late
Convention ut Petersburg, in appointing me
Fillmore Elector for this
information or my appointment was officially
given to me by Col It O. Britton and others,
committee for that purpose, I wrote to them
declining to accept the office which they ten
dered: That whilst my long cherished poli
tical principles had undergone no material mo
dification or change, yet the change of clrcum-
stanecs-tnri parties rendered it necessary, in
order to maintain those principles, that I should
act in the present canvass with the Southern
uirty which supports Mr. Bochanau ter the
'residency. The great issue before the coun
try is between free-soilism on the one hand and
Democracy ou the other. With this under
standing, 1 hesitate not to doclaro for democracy.
No man who loves the Union, and knows any
thing of its value, will have tho least difficulty
in such a contest. AU party considerations
will yield to the noble sentiment of patriotism,
and the affiliation becomes easy. AU admit that
there should be no division amongst us in the
iresent crisis, and all know that division exists,
low shall it be hoaled, and we of the South be
brought to act iu concert? thus presenting to
tho enemies of our country a mighty host,
animated by the same spirit of freedom and
oveof liberty; whose moral power most be felt
and acknowledged throughout the land. Surely
the weaker party ought not to exact compli
ance of the stronger. Then the problem Is
solved, and there is nothing left for ns in the
86uth but firmly, unitedly and as one man to
yoto for Mr. Buonanan.
I am, mV dear sir, with very great respect,

The alleged outrages aud violences of tho Bor
der Ruinfana in Kansas: having failed in an
effort to excite a revolution iuthe Territory,
through the valor of Jim Lano aud the money
of Gerrit Smith, the next move of the Shriek-
era is to alUtf the election in Kansas ou the 6th
October to go-by default, In order to effect the
elections in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and
Illinois. The Free-State meu are all to stay
away from the Ipolls, aud the Pro-slavery meu,
baviug everything their own way, the result
will enable them to revive the outcry about
Border Ruffian violence, their taking forcible
possession of tho polls, driving away Free-State
men and othbr excesses. A few private fights
which invariably occur at the polfs in frontier
elections, will he misrepresented $nd magnified
into imruralleled outrages on Free-State men.
