GkoIIUIA MaKUKAUTUIIKS IN Hr. liOUIH—The
opening of a contiiiuuiiH Hue of railroad from
the nrihuipiil cities and manufacturing places
iu Georgia, to NitahvJllo, Tennessee, is already
dcvelonTiig u hew trade, and one which pro
mises to l»e profitable to them and to us. The
State of Georgia, an is well known, lias not only
completed un extensive system pr railroads,
but she hits bcpli engaged in the erection of
manufactures fvnich contribute very much to
her wealtli and prosperity. With flue water
power uud the raw material grown at their
doors, they cnn'gucuessfully compete with other
States iu any fabrics, uud neucu tiiey are able
to solid sheetings, ojuuburgs, cotton yarns, Ac.
to New York for market. As wo havo said, the
completion of the lino of railroud to NushviUu
has turned their attontiou to our State, and
their goods begin to uppear in our market, di
rect from the manufaeturer’s hands, und where
tho Cumberland river is in navigable order, they
can bo placed here ou better terms than u
bought in New York or Boston umjpmnt. by
railroad.
On Saturday, we noticed at the domestic de
pot of J. M. McFadden A Co., bales of sheet
ing, osnaburgs, cotton yarns Ac., from tho Ma
con, Columbus,.Flint River and Eutonton Mills,
in Georgia, and tho Alisonia, 1-aurei Hill,
Franklin and Vale Mills, in Tennessee. The
quality tf theso goods is very superior, the os-
nnburgs weighing 8 to 0 oz. to the yard, the
Bheetlngs 2| yards to the pound. Our market
offers a better sale for these goods, inasmuch
os they may bo sold for cash or its equivalent,
and if Bent to New York they are sold on six
and eight months. We hope that a mutually
advantageous trade will now spring up between
Georgia and our State, and that we shall be
able to And a market for our productions and
manufactures iu that quarter. A large aud
profitable trade already exists with Tennessee,
and is unnuully extending itself, and a few
years will show that we will find iu the South
ern States ouv best tna ket.—SI. Louis Repub

Lives Lost.—Wo regret to learn that on Saitir

uf Dr. H. tt. Jones, it few mdos from this city,
was burnt. Four negroes were burnt to death
aud three ot».ers so badly injured that there is
scarcely a probability that oue of them will re
cover. Wo further lenru that thirty bales of
cotton were also consumed. The loss will prob
ably teach $15,000 to $18,000.
Tho origiu of tire dreadful calamity was, we

Aim t{ gome ry Journal (JcL l v ..
Hokhidle State of Affairs in Africa—
The Rev. Mr. Beuchumu u member of the “Lon
don Wesleyan Mission,” lias recently returned
from ft visit to Africa, und iu a sketch of the
negroes inhabiting the Gold Coast aud its vi
cinity, which weflud in tiie Honolulu Religious
Journal, he furnishes a picture exceeding in
horrors anything wo had yet believed of beings
wearing liuuiau form. Who cuu read without
a shudder of such bloody deeds uud Pande
monium customs us those which he records.
“ Scarce auy ouo of tlieir bloody customs
have becu abandoned siuce they first became
known to Europeans. They will even pave
their court-yards, palaces uud even the streets
or market places ol tneir villages or towns with
the Mentis uf those butchered iu tho wavs, at
feasts, funerals, or us sacrifices to Bossuiu.
When Aduhuitseu died, two hundred aud eighty
uf bis wives wero butchered before the arrival
of his successor, which put a stop to it, ouly to
increase tiie flow of blood und tho number of
deuth* in other ways. The remuinlug liviug
wives were buried alive, amid duuciug, singing
and bewailing, the noiso of muskets, bonis,
drums, yells, groans und screeches.
The victims wero marched along with large
knives passed through their cheeks. The exe-
cutiouers struggle fur the bloody office, while
tiie victims look on uud endure with upatby.
“Upon tho death of the king’s brother, four
ihoMsaud lives wero thus sacrificed. Upon the
death of a king of Ashantce, a general tnassacree
takes place, uud there can be no computation
of the number of victims. At their Yam cus
toms, Mr. Bawditch (another Euglishmuu)
witnessed a horrible sight. Every cubuccr, or
noble, sacrificed u slave us ho entered the gate.
Heads and t-kvdls formed the ornaments in their
possession. The blood of tho victims is collec
ted aud quailed as a delicious beverage. The
King of Dahomey paves the approaches to hU
j nluce aud the battlements »t his castles with
tiie skulls of Ills victims, und the greut Fetchie
Tree at Bodugra has its wide spread brances
laden with human carcasses aud limbn.”
