Counterfeit Merchants’ nnd Planters*
Bills.
It would be well for the public to be on their
guard against counterfeit notes of the Mer-
chant's and Planter's Bank ofthisoity. One ten
dollar bill, not genuine was passed off this mom
ing. The counterfeit has a blared greasy and
smirched appearance and lain all respects badly
executed. It would not probably deceive any
oue familiar with money, who should exercise
tolerable caution. The aignature of Mr. Roberta,
the President, la but a poor Imitation, while
the red ink on the counterfeit is of a much
deeper hue than on the genuine issue.
S'mco the foregoing was written we hear of
counterfeits of the same denomination (tens) in
the same style and manifestly the work of the
name parties, on the Central Railroad Bank'
There is doubtless a gang of coonterfdtera in
our midst. We call the attention of the public
to the reward of $100 offered by President
Boliert8, for their detection and apprehension.

We me indebted to the purser of the Steam*

biles, bid; do fair, 7Jd. The market opened on
Saturday with a brisk demand, resulting in
sales of 15,000 bales of extreme prices. The
Cauada’s accounts confirming the report of
killiug frost und advising lower crop estimates
than have yet been received, created greet ex
citement, and fully 30,000 bales changed{hands
on Holiday at an Improvement of Jd per lb.
The demand waa close today id ttfd dearer
fur the week, and in some instances even $d
advauee has been obtained. The inquiry from
both spinuers and speculators has turned chief
ly on the lower qualities, which are, conse
quently, relatively dearer. but the badness of
the trade iu Manchester has, .to some extent,
induced spinners to purchase less freely than
they might otherwise have done, (as very
high prices are looked for in tho event of the
crop tailing short of threemillion bales,) and
the larger part of the weeks business has been
done by speculators and oxporters. The Bal
tic arrived on Wednesday evening; her advi
ces hot varying from those already received,
had no efleot beyond strengthening tho posi
tion of holders. The atok of American shows
a falling off of 44,420 bales for the week. The
Continental markets getting very bare of cot
ton, their spinners will bavetonraw supplies
from hence and assists in the competition going
on between our spinners and speculators. To
day the sales are estimated at 12,000 boles, 4,-
080 bales on speculation and for export: the
market closes very firm, but rather quieter.
Manchester—Business has been only limited,
being checked by the advance demanded by
simmer.'. Money has slightly improved, for
though discounts are unaltered, there is more
contideuco as to the future course of monetary
aflairs. Consols have advunced and close to
day at 92$ to 92f for money, and 82} to 82{ for
account.

On this side ai| that is requisite to maintain
the tendency to recovery is ah arrival of gold
from Australia, before tho necessities of the
Bank of France iuduce them, in.the absence of
other uvailuble supplies, to renew* the draiu

£300,000 on board is now due, aud is looked for
with increasing anxiety. A double arrival
from Mexico 1b likewise expected, since the
wreck of tho Tay bos caused au interval of i
month instead ot a fortnight, between the last
mails. If these should bo received together,
aud the ordinary remittances from New York
should also coutinue, we may possibly get up
ward or a million sterling in the Course of next
week. This would be quite os much as the
Bank of France would be able to find means or

knowledge that it had so far strengthened itself,
might have a considerable influence iu smooth

The Sub-Treasury continues to disbuise con
siderably more thuu its receipts, aad the banks
are guiniug ^specie from this source. Ou
Monday half a million will goto Washington
for disbursement there. The money market
is without material change; temporary loans
arc more easily negotiated, bat business paper
unless of strictly prime quality, sells slowly.
The Stock market is very buoyant; at the
First Board very large sales were made at high

was unusual excitement. At the Second Board,
the activity continued, aud we make a compar

Evening auys:
The money market opened this week wiMi
increasing stringency, aud so continued up to
and including Wednesday, after which a little
more ease was manifested, though the market
lms shown an active demand up to the close
which is mainly owing to the Increased activ
ity^ stocks, the wants of the commercial com
munity having been comparatively moderate
since the 4th of the month. In the rates we
nave not the least change to notice since Sat
urday last. On call their is an active demand
st seven per cent., at which the large houses
are obtaining what they want and it therefore
may be considered os tho market rate, though
some parties are paying taore. Only very
short first class paper is done below ton per
cent, while longer dates rule at ten to twelve,
»nd fair names at twelve to fifteen. Strictly
iirst class single names may be quoted at the
rate last named, and names not so well knowu
at fifteen to eighteen per cent.
Fkangk and E no land.—The brief dispatches
forwarded us of tho Baitio’s accounts indicate
the growth of bad feeling between France and
England. The probability then is that the
Czar’H efforts to detach France from the West
ern Alliance are likely to be successful. The
Paris correspondent of the Now York Commer
cial, iu a letter of October 23d, has something
ua this point. Says be:
. There is no longer any doubt that England
ia nearly isolated in Earqpe in her Neapolitan
policy. Austria and Russia, there is good evi
dence for believing, are acting with Naples,
giving sympathy and advice. Franco Is only a
passive ally, and goes with England partly from
pressure and partly to keep the latter in check.
There are those who assert that Connt Walew-
*»i approved of the promulgation of tho famons
bortachakoff circular, regarding it as a salutu-
Vf reproof for the domineering spirit of Eng-
Und in tho affairs of the smaller States. How

The English and French Funds.
Thursday Evening.
The firmness which characterized the Eng
lish Funds at the close of business yesterda
was manifested in au increased degree thi
morning, and the market has been buoyant
throughout the day. Consols for money, which
left off lost evening at 92 to 1-8, were first
quoted at 92 1-8 to 3-8, aud, owing to several
lereons who had recently been operating on
ho adverse Bide having appeared os purchas
ers, a rise took place, which was greatly aided
by the steady investments of the publio, until
bargaiuB were effected at 02 5-8 for money, and
there were buyers for the account at 92 3-4.
At the close there waa rather less animation,
but the general appearance was still favorable,
and the last transactions were at 92 1-2 for
money, and 92 5-8 for the Gth November. Bank
Stock left oil at 211 to 213; Reduced 015-8 to
3-4; New Three per Cents 92 to 1-8; Exchequer
Bonds 981-4 to 1-2; India Bonds 3sto 6s prem.,
and Exchequer Bills 2s to 5s prem.
There was an active demand for Money to
day, both at the Bank of England and in the
discount market, but not to an extent beyond
what might be anticipated from the effect of
advances on stock being withheld.
Tbe private letters from Paris state that the
position of the Bank of France continues grad
ually to improve. Tho increased heaviness of
the Bourse yesterday is attributed to the rigor
with which all applications for advances on
stocks or railway bonds are treated. As
leans become due, renewals are refused, or at
events, limited to 10 or 20 per cent, of the in
evitable, and a constant pressure is kebtup,
which neautrallzes tho effect of the statements
regarding tho better condition of tho Bank,
although the policy pursued is the only one
that could insure any recovery being permanent
The discount of bills having more than 60 days
to run appears nearly impossible.
Five-franc pieces still arrive here in large
quantities from Paris. Bilver also appears to
be coming in from other places, and tne price
is flat.
By the Baltic.—It would seem that c it was
the Africa’s advices whioh cau-ed the turn In
the Liverpool Cotton Market in favor of buyers.
Tbe following dispatch appears in the Charles
ton News, of yesterday afternoon:
The Africa arrived out on the morning of the
29th.
Richardson, Spcuce & Co.’s Cotton Circular
says that tho steamer's news caused less firm
ness, and tho turn is in favor of the buyer.
Tho market is in general unchanged. The
sales in three days were 26,000 bales. Specu
lators took 6500, nnd exporters 3000. Bread-
Btufih are quiet. Tbe market generaly un
changed.
Cousols for money closed at 02}.
The Atlantic—This steamer left New York
lost Saturday for Liverpool with 34 passengers
and $030,887 in specie.
Horrible Muhdkr.—Peter Nnughton and his
wife were brutally murdered iu their house yes
terday morning ortho night before. Nadghton
was a respectable, laboring man an Irishman,
and bad accumulated some property. The gen
tleman for whom he worked wenttoNaughton s
house about ten o'clock, A. M. to inquire why
he did not come to work, as usual, upon open
ing the door, lie found the man nnd his wife,
lying side by side, on the floor, dead, their
bodies being mutilated In a horriblo mauner,
their Bkulls having been dreadfully fractured,
apparently with an axe, which was found in
tne room, with tho handle brokeu. Tho room
was covered with blood, aud a chest bad been
broken open, in which it is supposed Naughton
had some money. An infant, five months old,
was lying unharmed, in the bed, in an adjoin
ing room.—Worcester Transcript.
Flight op a Country Postmaster.—The
lostmaster of Georgetown,Mass., at the present
erm of the Court of Common Pleas, now sitt«
ing at Lawrence, was indicted tor dispen '
alcoholic liquors without a license. It seems
the emolumtnts of his ofilce was not sufficient
to remunerate him for his service, nml he hud
laced in his office a stock of liquors of tho R.
), brand. I twos noticed by tho denizens of
that quiet town, that tbe patrons of the office
on emerging, could not always “keep step to
the mimic or the Union,” but evinced a strom
tendency towards free soil. Some individual
who was conversant with theiaws of gravita
tion, soon solved the mystery why some bodies
could presuivo an equilibrium and others
could not. Ou the issuing of u capias it was
ascertained that the postmaster had disap
peared.
Pennsylvania.—The Pennsylvanian gives
majorities from most of the conntics, and esti
mates of tiie few counties not heard from, and
makes Buchanan’s majuority'over Fremont in
tbe State, over 30,000. Over both Fremont
and Fillmore, from 8,000 to 12,000.
Tho Presidential Electors chosen on Tuesday
last will be called by tho Governors of States to
meet in each State capitol on the first Wednes
day of December, and cost their vote, and
choose a messenger to carry it sealed to Wash
ington. On the second Wednesday of February
the returns will be counted by Congress aud
declared.
