Tub Agricultural Fair or Chatham and
Effingham CouNTiSiv-We call the attention
ot the public to tho Agricultural Fair to be held
at the Race Course to-morrow, and to continue
for two days. We hope that there will be a
good attendance from Savannah, to give an
impetus to so praiseworthy an enterprise.—
Something of this kind lias been needed to
itimulute opr farmers in a generous rivalry be
tween them in their various industrial products.
The best method, according to our idea, for
Savannah to testify her appreciation, is by her
citizen* becoming members of the Associa
tion.
D3r* A statistical table of the Cotton crop of
the United States, Exports, Consumption,
Freights, Exchange, Stock on hand aud ex

worthy young man of our city, Mr- Henry G.
Freeman. Every planter and merchant should
possess themselves of a copy. Our neighbors
of the Republican have them for sale.

A Stupendous * iitcrprlse,
A Weekly SieamtMp Ferry tine between Me
Chteapeake Hay and Milford Haven.
The Hon. A. Dudley Msnh,' the'*' Assistant
Secretary of State, has addressed a letter "to
the citixous of the slaveholdlbg States,” lu
which hu anuonuoeshis purpose, iu conuootiou
with others, to establish "a weekly iron steam
ship ferry Hue between the Chesapeake Bay
and Milford Haven.”
Lon m>n, August 12, I860.
To the Citizens ok tuh Blateholdino States
With your eo-opewtiou, il' it can bo secured,
1 propoeo to establish, in conjuuctlon with cer
tain associates to be herealter designated, a
Weekly Iron 8teatnsldp Ferry Line between
the Chosopeako Bay and Milford Haven. The
dlstauce by tiie Southern route from tho oue to
tho other of those water* is about 3.160 miles—
shorter by at least 100 miles than that at pre
sent traversed by tho American (Reamers from
New York to Liverpool. Theroutoia cutlrely
free from the dangers incident to coastwiso na
vigation and icebergs.
The town of Milford is situated oue hundred
and twenty miles southward and westward or
Liverpool, ono hundred miles westward of
Bristol, and two hundred and seventy miles
westward of London. It is connected with each
by railway, with the exception of a space of
three miles, which will i;e completed next
spriug. To Londou the line—broad guage
throughout—will be run over by express trains
inside of seven hours. To Waterford the dis
tance Is seventy miles by water, at whiohport
there is a connection by railway with Cork.
Kilkenny, Limerick, Dublin and Belfast. To
Havre the distance is about two hundred and
twenty five miles.
It is estimated that all the uavies of Europe
could ride in sAtety aud swing at their anchors
iu Milford Huveu. This haven enjoys in an
eminent degiee the essential requiste* for ren
dering to town of Milford the first port of
Europe. It bos length and breadth of compass
deep water and good bottom, facility of in
egress, aud egress and secure shelter. But not
withstanding this unsurpassed combination of
advantages, it has been comparatively valaless
heretofore to the commercial world, on accouut
of befog shut ont from internal commoniuntion
with the metropolis and tho manufacturing
districts of the British realm.
Like Milford Haven, the worth of the Chow*
peak Bay has never been properly appreciated,
except for national purposes. Commercially,
no peculiar benefits have been derived from its
excellent qualities os a haven and its easy ap
proach from the ocean. But, happ ily,for sever
al years railways proceeding from the couflnes
of the South, Southwest, West and Northwest,
connecting oue with auotber, aud eucircling
and embracing all the cit;e* and pricipal towns,
have been steadilv and resolutely forcing their
passages over aud through tho impediments
which obstructed their progress, and ure now
in so advauced a state as to give reasonable
assurauce than in a year or two they will con
verge, completed upon the Virginia shore. By
such a communication, assisted by canals aud
rivers, will be conveyed for transportation to
foreign countries, us soon us the proposed At
lantic steam ferry lino is established, * part of
the cotton of North aud South Curolina, Geor
gia, Tennessee, Alabnma, Mississippi, Louisln
nn, Arkansas, Florida and Texas; the tobacco,
wheat, and corn, of Virginia, Tennessee, Mary
land and Delaware,; the pork, bacon, lard and
tobacco of Kentuky and Missouri; the rich of
South Carolina, and the rosin and turpentine
of North Carolina. Nor is it improbable that
Pennsylvania, to say nothing of other non
slaveholding States, will avail herself of it for
conducting a lucrative traffic at homo and
abroad. The waters of her great central artery
meet and commingle with those of the South in
the Chespeak Bay, and her varied interest*
strenghteaed by her inflexible devotion to the
constitution, unite her in bonds of indissolubili
ty with hor Southern sister.
The question 1ms probably been millions of
times asked or turned over in reflecting minds,
Why—wltli respect to the oue and the other—
was Providence so prodigal of its favors to the
Chesapeake Bay and Milford Haven? The
answer seems at lost to be satisfactorily furn
ished. As if by some mysterious arrangement
of preconcerted scientific thought, the locomo
tive is about to visit each, taking with It the
valuablelproductsofthe populous and rich inter!
or simultaneously with the discoveiy of a quick
and ctieap plan of ocean conveyance for tnose
vroducta to thoir consumers: for it muBt be
distinctly observed that m no other water in
Kurope or America can a vessel of the magni
tude of the Great Eastern, and of her immen>e
capacity for carrying, enter and depart where
there is a reasonable assurance that freights
can be procured in sufficient abuudnnce to fill
her bat that of theOhesaneako Bay or Milford
H&veu. It is almost needless to remark that
with all that steam has so beneficially acoom-
f illshcd on tho ocean, it has done but little lu
ransporting any of the chief heavy articles
of Bouthern or British export.
What point on the Chesapeake Bay will be
selected for the Atlautlo steam ferry line land
ing cannot yet be determined. It will, howev
er, assuredly be that which in all respects is
the most suitable, and there, without necessa
rily building up a populous city, a storehouse
of such importance will establish itself as nev
er was created before from which the slave
holding States, if not also a number of the
non-slaveholding ones, will draw their supplies
at moderate prices. In like munnner Milford
Haven will become tho storehouse of American
S iroducts, which product* will be conveyed at
ow rates, and expeditiously, to every part of
Europe. As if in anticipation of this, an Anglo
French compauy is in the course of successful
formation for constructing a large number of
steamers to engage in the European coasting
trade.
The diatauco, os has been stated, between
Milford Haven aud the Chesapeake Bay is 3160
miles. The passage across it would be as fre
quently under seven days as over seven days
by the ferry line. From the Chesapeake
to the Pacific the travel, as soon os the con
necting railways shall have been completed
will be cosily performed iu five days; and from
thence to Melbourne in sixteen days. Thus
there would be a diminution oi Bix days upon
the contemplated time of the Great Eastern.
Travellers engaged on commercial or indus
trial pursuits lrould, consequently, choose the
American route for its expedition, as would
also tho mere pleasure seeker, for the interest
ing and diversified scenes which it would pre
sent to his view. And still greater than to
Australia would be the diminution in time from
Europe by the American line to Southern
China, Japan, &o. The Isthmus of Suez and
the Bed Sea would be measurably abandoned,
and San Francisco would becomo the great
central rendezvous for Europeans and others
voyaging to aud from the East. It would be
brought within eighteen days of London aud
within twelve of the Chesapeake Bay, which
time would be again shortened five days, if
ever the Pacific Railroad should be made.
By means of such an undertaking as that of
the Atlantic Steam Ferry Line, no stretch of
the imagination is required to foretell tliut tho
Chesapeake Bay would be the mart of the larg
est travel and transportation of industrial pro
duce ever known. From thence they would
radiate in every direction, to the benefit of all
who curne within the sphere of their move
ment. The gold of California and Australia,
the silver of Mexico, und mails from every civ
ilized part of the globe, would also concentrate
there for distribution and expedition to their
respective destinations. Neither ice uor Enow
would ever suspend communication for a day
on the direct line.
Four such vessels as the Great Eustern, de
parting weekly from the Cheasoucak Bay,
would convey to Milford Haven in a year
1,260,000 bales of cotton, or more than their
eqmvilant in weight in a less bulky article.
An opinion cannot bo formed at this time
with any degree of accuracy as to what length
of distance ponderous articles weald bear trans
portation on railroad to the Cheasepo Bay,
with the certainty of conveyance uccroas the
Atlantic in seveu or eight days, at unprecedent
ed low rates. It was estimated that on ac-
count of BUBponsluu of navigation by unusual
low water In the rivers or tho slaveholding
States during tho lutter part of 1864 and tile
early part of 1855, the producers of cotton and
other staples of exportation experienced a
clear loss of at legist $20,000,000. Cotton
might possibly travel to theOheiiscpeako Bay,
touvaif the advantages there offbred for its
speedy transit to Europe, from a remote a
region us the Interior of Texas. So with other
articles. Should this transpire, there are
doubtless those who have advanced to the meri
dian ot lifo will not iiuve passed away from
earth without seeing a dally, instead or the
proposed weekly, ocean ferry line in successful
operation. • .
The Idea of connecting the Oliesapeake Bay,
by speedy steam communication, with n port
facing it in Europe has been cherished by me
for the last thirteen yn.aw. But I bad fears

In the preceding address it has merely been

enterprise and it* paramount Importance to tb<

tion I shall enter into minute details relative to
the manner of carrying it into successfol ope

Southern citizen who ohooees may become a

at $100 each; that no person shall be permitted

concern.

Wonders will Never Cease.—The Phila
delphia Ledger, of Saturday, says: "A wager
of $1000, we learn, has been made in'New
York, by Brougham, that he and his company
will perform in both New York and Philadel
phia the same night, tho distance being nearly
one hundred miles apart. Tho arrangement is
to perform on Thursday evening next a petite
comedy in New York, finishing at 8 o’clock,
then to take a special train and run to Phila
delphia by 10, and perform at the Circus the
extravaganza of Pocahontas. The arrange
ment will require the locomotive to travel about
fifty miles an hour; and, to prevent any acci
dent, it is designed to have a man with a flam
beau stationed at every mile along the route,
and bonfires every three miles. The perform
ance is to conclude with a banquet at the
Girard House to the New York guests. This
is certainly one of the most extraordinary
wagers ever made, and will require very nice
calculation und exact time to enable the task
to be accomplished successfully.”

young men bearing a black coffin, headiog the
lacmlan, and another, with black bonnet and
Iress, riding upon a little Canadian stallion,
representing Fremont’s widow, the new dis
consolate Jessie. Attar a general round of the
