copied from the New York Jmfepeaifant, a re
ligious paper (so called,) the organ of the Con-
gregatlonal Clergy in New York, and New Eng.
land. Knowing that the papdr has no circula
tion South, and in consequence this may fell
to meet yonr eye, I encloee with It a request
that you will publish it in yonr paper, and re
quest all others to do the aame throughout the
State. 1 think it qulto\ time the South were
aroused to her Interests, and seek to extricate
herself from aconnectlon with those who con-
descend to the lowest abuse and basest slander,
perpetrated under the garb of religion, by a,
political priesthood. It la Impoaelble for yon
tolmagino the bitterness and wrath denounced
against the South, I am sure if the Southern
people knew the extent of the prejudice and
calumnies circulated against them here, they
would ceaae to patronage northern, and es
pecially New England Manufacture*, and look
to their own States and people to supply their
wants.

sire to arouse, the minds ot the Bonthernpeople
on the subject of Manufactures, the arts and

they ridicule the idea of our existence
vreign and Independant States, for which rea
son they heap any amount of abuse upon us,
and this article exceeds any that I have yet

THE SOUTH.
In morals, manners, personal habits, ■
Ideas of cleanliness, comfort, decency and pro
priety In their dress and habitations, tha ma
jority of the white people of that wholeregion
arc debased and deffied to an extent which
Northern people, who have never sojourned
among these Southern dirty white savages, can
hurdly imagine or believe.
And it should be known, should be remem
bered. and blaxoned, that the original cause of
this wide and deep barbarism is not wholly or
largely in slavery, but is independent of it, and
was partly anterior to it.
The mass of the population of the Atlantlo
coast of the slave region of the South, are des
cended from the transported convicts and out

The ships James Balnea and Lightning had
drived at Liverpool with £1,1100,000 in specie,
h connection therewith and with the abscuco
of further withdrawals Item the Bank. The
Times anticipates an early return to the rate of
six per cent, but says much will depend on the
next advices from Uhina and ludia.
The Bank returns for the week show consid
erable increase in bullion and lu unemployed
notea. The buUiou amounted to £0,084,107,
and the notes to £3,000,816.
The British Government has, at the request
of Oyrna W. Field, esq., of Now York, ordered
a steamer to be Htted out under efficient officers
to examine tkurougkiy the coasts oflrelaud
and Newfoundland, and tosouud across the At
lantlo between these parts to ascertain the best
place for laying and landiug the submarine
telegraph cublo. The Government hus further
agreed to guarantee four per cent interest per
annum on tho whole capital required to manu
facture and lay down the cable between New
foundland aud Ireland. Contracts lor the
whole extent of the Atlantic cablo were slgued
In London on Tuesday, the 18th ult., one half
to be manufactured by Messrs. W. Kuper,
Glass A Co., of London, and the other by h. s,
Newell AGo., of Liverpool. It is all to liediom-
ileted and placed on board of two steamers
ready for sea on or boforo the 31st of May next,
and by the 4th of J uly next it is couSdectly ex
pected that Groat Britain and the United States
will be In telegraphic communication.

The Prussian correspondence of Berlin says:

tended by. the Danish Goverement, it is an

Denmark, as the price of redeeming the Sound

planatiou relative to the firing on the English
gun-boat Yenikale: ,
“We believe the afikir has been.explained to
tho satisfaction of both parties.' The gun-boat
baing about 'to pass the Straits, a gun loaded
with powder was fired, according to common
usage, aB a signal. The captain explained to
the commandant of the forts his reason for
being in those waters. The first shot not hav
ing been heard, a second one was fired, and
subsequently a third—after which the English
vessel answered, and accepted the required
parley. The two commanding officers, Russian
and English, having exchanged explanations,
agreed to reier tho matter to the two embassies
at Constantinople; und this course having been
taken, it was, we understand, amicably ar
ranged.”
THE EAST.
Advices from Constantinople of the 13 inst*
state that M. D, Boutenietfo had again endea
vored to obtain from the Government the dis
missal of English ships from the Bosphorus.
The attempts of Tcrouk Kham had failed to
effect with Lord Redcliff a settlement of the
disputes between England and Porsiu.
An English frigate had arrived at Constan
tinople, and other ships were expected.
COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Liverpool Cotton Market.—The Brokers’ Cir
cular states that the market was uot affected
by the advices from the United States, but a
quiet tone prevailed, and prices were generally
unchanged, excepting for tho lower qualities,
which bad undergoue a decline of Jd per lb.
The sales of the week amounted to 31,000 bales,
including 1,900 on speculation, and 1,800 for

Marine Intelligence.—Boston Dee. 4.—
The bark Almira, from Yalpariso for Boston,
went ashore last night at Race Point, and tho
sea at last accounts was making a preach over
her.
The missionary .brig Morning Star, hence for
the Sandwich Islands, anchored during the
recent storm near Race Point just clear of tho
breakers. There ia no danger of her going
ashore, but the weather is too rough to proceed.

“Yesterday I was in the city of Lecompton.
some times called the ‘Territorial Capital/ anc
learned that it was the intention of Col. Titus
to leave with his two companies of militia for
Leavenworth, and there the Governor is to dis
band them, for which they have petitioned, and
then about ono hundred will take passage for
your city, there to wait until the 10th of next
month, at which timo they Intend to embark
for Nicaragua via New Orleans, under the
command of Col. Titus. He says that sufficient
money has been provided to defray the expen
ses ot the expedition. On the arrival in Cen
tral Amorica they Join the forces of President
Walker,’and ore expected to fight forthe se
cure possession of that country. Col. Titos
has been a filibuster all of his life, and was
once in Cuba, under the uu fortunate Lopez. He
sent Walker thd- first company of men ever
sent from the states.
“He came to Kansas about the same time
Col. Buford did, and ever since he has been
identified with the troubles; a pro-slavery man,
throughout; good-looklug, a native ot New
York; emigrated to Florida at the age of 21
married arioh southern lady; owns slaves, ant
loves notoriety.

Mr. Whitfield’s admission as delegate from
Kansas, Mr. Phelps stated that a majority of Mr.
W.'s friends were In the city, and by one^jority

Col. Wm. Speucer, of Newark, Ohio, late
employed under Mr. Calhoun, Surveyor General
of Kansas, has been appointed United Statw
Marshal of Kansas, vice Donaldson, resigned.
The new marshal was formerly sheriff of hla
county. President of the Mansfield and New
ark railroad, and more recently was sent to
Kansas by the President as Commissioner to
appraise the Deleware lands.
